Sonicโs sensitive ears flicked in intrigue. He turned, catching sight of the knighted cat just as the knee pads of her armor hit the charcoaled earth below. Her eyes were frozen wide and wet with tears as they fell upon the girl now standing before them both.
โMโฆMer l i n a . . . ?โ
Merlinaโs smile quivered.
โIsโฆthat really youโฆ?โ
The hedgehogโs ears flopped in confusion, โHuh?โ He turned back towards the wizard, trying to make sense of the scene he was witnessing unfold, โWaitโฆWhatโs wrong with Merlina?โ
But the princessโs doppelganger wasnโt listening, โYouโฆYou are supposed to beโฆโ She leapt to her feet with feline precision, swiping a clattering hand behind her, โHow- HOW ARE YOU HERE!!?!?โ

Merlinaโs graceful smile returned.
โI have not the slightest idea of what you speak o-โ
Shing!
Before he could register it, the rapier once strung along his belt was now pointed so close to the wizardโs neck that surely the slightest breath would spell doom.
โPERCIVAL!!!!โ Before Sonic could so much as shift his weight, the knight had already brought the blade in tighter to its target.
โNOBODY MOVE!!!โ The cat glowered in tearful vengeance as the woman before her continued to smile unflinchingly, โYou arenโt her- YOU DONโT EVEN LOOK LIKE HER!!!!โ
Caliburn began to jostle fervently, โLADY PERCIVAL-!!!โ
โThen do it.โ
Percival jolted.
It was a subtly muttered command, though a command nonetheless. The silver eyes of the wizard finally sparked to life, a less graceful smile now fighting against her lips. She leaned in close, tapping the trembling tip of Percivalโs blade as she whispered for only her ears to listen, โLet me be with him then in the Underworld.โ
โ-!!!โ Percival gasped.
Her blade lowered ever so slight-
โLADY PERCIVAL, HALT THESE FOOLISH GESTURES!!!โ
By the time the knight had turned to acknowledge the sword, Merlina was composed as she always was. Silence hung in the air heavier than the sulfur of the molten mining grounds surrounding them.
โIโฆโ Her hand released the rapier.
Clatter!
Sonic raced to pick it up before she had the chance to change her mind.
โThere!โ The hero(ish) released a hefty sigh both in relief and exhaustion once more from the heat, โNowโฆcan someone PLEASE tell me what THAT was about?โ
Silence.
His emerald gaze pierced the blade at his side in some fruitless attempt to see through his alloy frown, โListen, I canโt prove myself to be anything unless you let me in on what exactly is going on-โ
โMerlinaโฆdiedโฆโ
Sonicโs eyes fell wide, the tension melting from his shoulder like wax from a candle as he slowly turned to face the cat now holding her arm for comfort.
โWโฆโ
His bloodied friend drew her finger along the edge of her scimitar, turning Sonicโs stomach into a knot.
โW h a t ?โ
Caliburn sighed, โNo. You were deceived, Lady Percival.โ For once, his gaze appeared tired, โFor I aided in her escape myself that night those many years agoโฆโ
The human without the locket disappeared once more to the back of the hedgehogโs mind as he turned to acknowledge the sword at his side with worry, โH-Huh? โEscapeโ?โ

Merlina gripped her staff tighter.
Againโฆsilenceโฆ

โAhโฆโ The wizard broke the silence like a spell in what Sonic assumed to be her repertoire of knowledge, โLet us not talk of such dismal matters. You have bested each of the Knights of the Roundtable and carry their blades do you not?โ
Sonic blinked, still somewhat spellbound, โUhโฆy-yeahโฆbut-โ
Merlina threw her arms out wide with a beaming smile, โThen let us return to Nimueโs domain to rest and celebrate the coming age of new life!โ
Sonicโs brow furrowed, โ...โ
He regripped his friendโs hilt for comfort as the memory of his missing friend turned to face him.

Though his heart and mind werenโt truly aligned in what to do about the scene, Sonic eventually went along with the wizardโs insistence that nothing was wrong and left with her, Percival opting instead to rejoin her defeated comrades in Camelot and inform them of what transpired. Even as a โwell, maybe not a villain but certainly not a true hero eitherโ he couldnโt deny any longer that heโd come to care about the people of Avalon and wanted what was best for them. The problem was that he couldnโt shake this persistent feeling that taking down Arthur wouldnโt lead to the widespread happiness heโd hoped for. For one, it seemed that he was once a kind man, the kind of ruler Sonic wished he would be if he were part of some monarchy.
Yeah rightโฆ
Sonic? A king or even a prince?
Never happening.
The hedgehog leaning against one of the villagerโs huts grimaced at the thought as his eyes continued to follow the rhythmic steps of the leafy people dancing beneath the lanterns. It made him uncomfortable, the mere thought of being some important figurehead with all eyes on himโฆ
โฆ
He sighed, lowering his voice to a pouty mutter, โThen whyโdya have to go and become the โHero of Mobiusโ idiotโฆโ
โโHero ofโ...โMo-bee-usโ? What is that?โ
โGa-aah!!โ Sonic nearly jumped out of his skin, not realizing his self-talk had fallen upon the ears of the woman now tilting her head before him. He placed his gauntlet hand over his chest and sighed dramatically, โYou scared me, Merlinaโฆโ
The violet wizard giggled mischievously, โI apologize. You just seemed so intense I thought I might join you.โ
โUuhโฆโ He averted his gaze, not wishing for any more unwelcome reminders of the girl with the golden hair tonight, โSureโฆโ
With that, Merlina leaned back against the hutโs wall beside him in a childlike manner. There was a moment of peaceful silence, Sonicโs heart unsure if he was truly there or sitting beside his friend beneath the stars as she comforted him.
He sniffed, wiping away a couple of loose tears.
โ...โ The woman watched him for a moment, unsure what to say at the display. Her gaze dropped, reminiscing over what once was as she turned back to watching over the people of Avalon as they celebrated, โThese peopleโฆThey dance and play as if all of this will not inevitably come to an end somedayโฆโ
Sonicโs attention was caught. He sniffed again, wiping another few tears free as he found the words, โYa knowโฆmost of the time everyone just tells me itโs โgoing to be okayโ and that โIโll feel better somedayโ...โ
The smile in Merlinaโs facade dropped, and Sonic felt he was being given a special invitation into her heart, โWhy fool ourselves with such lies and lofty notions?โ She bent down, plucking a loose dandelion from the grass and twirling it in her long, decorated fingers, โThe only manner in which happiness will last is in a world where its people never come to ruin.โ
โHeh.โ Sonic released a small but genuine smile as he wiped another tear, โYou can only wish.โ
โDo you?โ
โHm?โ
Sonicโs ear flicked in intrigue as the wizard brought the yellow-petaled specimen to her nose to smell, โWhat is life, but not like this: beautiful but a weed nonetheless that must be plucked or risk losing the flowers that would beโฆโ
The hedgehogโs gaze danced between the dandelion and its owner a few times as if trying to capture in full what it was she was getting at, โHuh? But Merlina, donโt we only see flowers bloom because of the life that surrounds us?โ
Her gaze fell longingly at the already decomposing stem, โPerhapsโฆโ She smelled it once more before letting it drop from her grasp. She turned, smiling against the lights above as an angel with a halo, โThough you did not answer my question.โ
โIโฆโ Again, his eyes darted, not daring to look his deceased friend in the eyes any longer, โ...โ
โ...โ Merlina frowned, โSonicโฆperhaps I remind you of someone you have lost?โ
โ-!!!โ
Already, he was facing her again, eyes wide with shock though tongue unable to form the words held deep in his soul.
โI-Iโฆโ
Merlina smiled again, โIt is alright. I assumed so from the manner in which you avert your gaze from me.โ
Pain painted his face like a canvas, โIโฆโ His hand found the locket, tears falling more freely now that he had a moment of peace and someone to confide in, โI miss herโฆโ

But Merlina continued to hold on tight, her own tears gracing Sonicโs back as they fell.
โIt is going to be alright, Sonic. We are going to create a kingdom where no one will ever have to die again. I promise.โ
Sonicโs eyes widened at her final words.
He smiled.
โOkayโฆItโs a promise, Eveโฆโ
โ...โ
Merlina shook off the boyโs momentary confusion.
Nimue giggled at the sword in her grasp as she continued her pace through the dense woods, โYou worry too much, Caliburn.โ

Still, despite his best attempts to, he couldnโt wipe the intense concern off of his polished brow. The bright moonlight above seemed only to exacerbate the expression, painting it in the same harsh shadows Nimue hadnโt seen since that rainy day heโd first entered the stone.
She fell quiet for a beat, โCaliburnโฆare you certain you are up for the task being requested of you? Arthurโฆhe was your friendโฆNo. More than that. He was your brotherโฆโ
The sword remained silent.
โAre youโฆtruly prepared to slay him where he stands?โ
Againโฆsilence.
Nimue frowned, โ...โ She turned her face skywards, her rosy quills now dashed in the blue of her sanctuary, a cascading array of purples dancing across her features like the northern lights, โCome. Let us restore your holy magic for the coming battle at hand.โ

She could only watch in sadness as the bladeโs features communicated the broken spirit within, even as she lowered him into the sacred pool and cast her magic upon him. The sky danced in the particles left behind, like fireflies dotting the line of trees surrounding them. She lifted him, her finest creation, from the lake and watched as the glittering water slid from his pristine blade.
Though, he remained wet with tears.
And so did she.
She understood.
And she would stay with him however long he needed to lay his friend to rest in his heart.

โ...โ Her tear-stained face couldnโt be bothered to show any other emotion, โYesโฆCaliburn?โ

She knew in her heart where this was going, โCaliburnโฆโ
Though the sacred sword was not one to lose a battle, even one of wills.

The air surrounding the hero in blue and white danced and swayed from the molten fumes rising from the lava below. Even so, he continued on, weaving meticulously between the rocky footholds upon which shriveled, charcoal trees screamed for mercy from the intense heat. It hadnโt taken long for the dense forest to meld into volcano, the prior rainstorm easing and eventually fading to steam as the reluctant hero made haste. To where exactly, he was unsure, but Sonic used this time to continue adjusting to the steps of his new insoles.ย
Thank Chaos heโd had the bright idea to try on his shoes again before being summoned into the storybook.
Itโd been an urge, one Sonic couldnโt quell despite his ceaseless attempts at scolding himself otherwise. Heโd wanted deep in his soul to go out, to reconnect with the world heโd locked himself away from for so long (that and his knack for going stir-crazy while sitting still). It was more than just Tails too. He knew they all missed him, at least the perfectly crafted hero theyโd all come to know and love over the years, but every time heโd see her bloodied face in his mind it was as if none of that mattered anymore.
He felt it deep in his heart: heโd lost that privilege.

It justโฆfelt wrongโฆas if some part of him desperately wished to hold on, to preserve his image of a world with her still in it.
Because perhapsโฆif he refused to move onโฆthen time wouldnโt move on without her either.

Sonic shook the feeling from his heart. No. Heโd promised to be there for his friends from now on. Tails needed him- they ALL did! It was his duty as a hero!
He had to move on.
He was going to move on.

โWOAH!!!โ
Sonic ducked quickly as lava sprayed forth from a crack in the cliffโs side like a fountain. The top of his quills โand lingering bits of fur from Niaโs wrathโ raised instinctively in terror as they nearly caught aflame, causing the Blue Blur to have to quickly brush them back down or risk serving up fried hog โer dog โorโฆwhatever kind of Mobian-beastโฆthing he was nowโฆย
That wasโฆa piece of his identity heโd certainly have to sort out laterโฆ
Sonic didnโt know whether to be thankful or aggravated still that Merlina had forced him to face his problems with this little adventure.
With a quick slide and a dash past another grove of charcoaled trees โno, Sonic was NOT letting his mind go there for onceโ theโฆsomewhat-hero happened upon a rocky clearing. He slowed to a steady jog, nearly tripping over his slightly misshapen feet as he then brought his jaunt down to a casual walk. Thankfully, heโd made a quick recovery before the sword at his side could notice, placing both hands behind his head as he inhaled deeply.
Only smoke and brimstone were there to greet his lungs.
Sonic let out a small cough, opting instead to focus on theโฆstifling heat suffocating himโฆ
It wasnโt as if he couldnโt tap into the natural Flow of Chaos anymore โnot that heโd even attempted going super or so much as using chaos control since that final battle against Dark Gaiaโ but it seemed as if Sonic had lost his innate connection for good once he and Nia had become one. It was just like the night heโd restored Glaciaโs temple in Holoska, the cursed hero unable to regulate his body heat with more than the coarse, midnight fur lining his back.ย
Or like the Flame of Judgmentโs effectsโฆ Though Sonic didnโt entertain a moment more on the subject of the last storybook heโd unfortunately been a part of.
Is this really how everyone else dealt with extreme heat and cold?
This suckedโฆ
โPhew! Know where I can find a thermostat, Cali?โ
The sword at the fanning hedgehogโs side sighed in exasperation as he muttered under his breath, โIt is Caliburn, you knaveโฆโ He shook off the unintended insult though and addressed his wielder once more, โI dare not even ask what a โthermostatโ is. Knowing you, it is most probable that it is some torture device in the world you hail fromโฆโ
Sonic chuckled, rubbing his nose slightly as he continued his pace, โOnly when Tails gets ahold of itโฆโ
โโTailsโ...?โ
โMy little brother.โย
Caliburn smiled, eager at this chance to finally break through the moody hedgehogโs shell and know him on a more personal level, โAh. Then he is one of great importance to youโฆโ
โYeahโฆโ Sonic frowned slightly, slowing his pace even more as his mind wandered again, โ...โ
This time, Caliburn noticed: โSir Sonic?โ
โ...โ
โWhat is wrong?โ
The hedgehog stopped in his tracks, though not without another slight stumble he quickly accounted for. His head dropped, his eyes glazing in despondency as his mind wandered to the foxโs invitation earlier outside of the storybook.

His offer to provide a safe space to talkโฆ
โIt justโฆdidnโt hit me until nowโฆhow worried he must beโฆโ
The swordโs alloy brow raised in concern, โOf you? Are you perhaps troubled because of your being here in our world?โ
He thought back to his darkest days immediately following her funeral, โNo, thatโs not it.โ Sonic clenched his fist in shame.
โThen what is it?โ
โIโฆโ He considered how little heโd thought of his brother during that time, how deeply his bottomless grief had to have hurt the boy.
His denialโฆ
His angerโฆ
His pleas for someone to give her backโฆ
His sorrowโฆ
Hisโฆisolationโฆ
All of itโฆthe responsibility of care heโd placed on his little brotherโs shoulders when he, too, was grieving such immense lossโฆ

That wasnโt the kind of responsibility any hero placed on another.
Caliburnโฆhe didnโt need to get wrapped up in this either.
Sonic released everything before shaking his head, โ...Nothing.โ He turned his face, smiling brightly at his trusty sword with the confidence of a true hero, โI said I was going to be there for him, ALL of them, from now on, right?โ He turned ahead, hiding his face once more, โSo when I get home, Iโmโฆโ
His missing friendโs dead eyes pierced him worse than ever before.
โI-Iโmโฆโ
Even so, he continued to smile.

Evenโฆif his panicked eyes betrayed himโฆ
He had toโฆ

Caliburn sighed, his gaze glossing over with unwanted memories of his own.
We truly are similarโฆyou and Iโฆ He closed his eyes, replaying the moment the nature of his existence had been shattered before his very eyes, If only you knew the weight of my sinsโฆ
Butโฆmaybe this was the time for truthsโฆ
A kind of camaraderie that would prevent yet another tragedy from befalling the great kingdom of Avalonโฆย
Caliburn took a breath.

FWOOOOOSH!!!!
Sonic snapped out of his trance, bending backwards out of pure instinct as a torrent of flames whizzed past his fur.
โWOAH!!!โ
Caliburn caught the glint of silver lining the knightโs armor in the distance, his eyes widening in recognition, โMy word!! That must be-!!โ
As if on cue, the slender figure of a cat leapt forth from the flames, rapier already drawn as her silver-laced heels clacked gracefully against the rocky foothold. The hedgehogโs eyes widened in recognition as he straightened his back, his mind recounting the princessโs stubborn refusal for friendship only a couple of months following Neoโs attack on South Island.ย
Her smile as she finally accepted him into her lifeโฆ
Her tears as they separated, even though she knew in her heart that they would one day meet againโฆ
BlazeโฆI havenโt forgotten our promiseโฆย
Though he knew in his heart that this wasnโt her, something deep in his soul was telling him the perfectly poised knight before him was in dire need of that same friendship.
Gawainโฆ Sonic glanced at the hilt at his side sympathetically, Despite what Caliburn said, I canโt let something like that happen againโฆ
He knew he had to save the Knights of the Roundtable from Arthurโs dark reign.
Whatever it takesโฆ

Sonic sighed, rubbing his temples to relieve himself of the ghostโs disdainful gaze as he muttered to himself, โOf course youโd be her. It makes senseโฆโ He considered how each of the knights resembled a friend struggling at one point or another with similar isolation before shaking his head. He then drew Caliburn and sheath out to the side as he took a ready stance, prepared for what would undoubtedly be a tough fight ahead, โAlright, sparky! Time to go boom!โ
The knight scoffed, โSuch impertinence! Very wellโฆโ She held her sword skyward in a ceremonious manner as she took in an ashen breath, igniting the blazing magic within her soul, โArthurโฆmay your teachings guide me to victoryโฆโ She clicked her gaze into a perfect ready stance, the glint of her turned blade catching against the golden locket adorning Sonicโs heart, โNow we shall test your skills, sir knight!โ She swiped her arm behind her, taking off in a full sprint as she cried out.
โHeh.โ
Sonic, The Villainous Hero, raced into the heat of battle with an enthusiastic grin.
CLASH!!!!
How he missed the rush of adrenaline a rival such as Blaze wrought.
CLANG!!!
SWOOOSH!!!
The brazen hedgehog leapt above the swing of the knightโs blade just as it would slice him in half.
CRASH!!!
BOOOM!!!
The volcano burst open like a firework, painting the blackened sky like a canvas and silhouetting the dueling figures like smoke against flames.
โHah!โ
Oh how he longed for this feelingโฆ
โGraaaah!!โ
The freedom such rhythmic challenge heaped upon his mind.
He really hadnโt felt this way sinceโฆ
Sinceโฆbeforeโฆ

Sonicโs smile faltered.
A flash!
The ghost of his lost friend replaced the cat, chaos spear drawn and ready to strike against the burning core surrounding them.
Thoughโฆshe looked terrified.
He reached out for her arm.
Suddenly, she screamed.
Another flash!
โฆDarkness?
Thousands of slitted eyes gazing upon her in a collective threat.
Againโฆshe was terrified.
โH-Huhโฆ?โ
Sonicโs eyes widened.
โIsโฆthisโฆ?โ
Butโฆwhyโฆ?
Whyโฆcouldnโt he remembe-
โSIR SONIC!!!โ
Shing!

Caliburn threw himself defensively before the rapier, bits of shredded leather flying free as his sheath came undone.
Now, with only the glint of the sharp end of the blade peering back at him, Sonic fell through the air dumbstruck.
โWโฆWhatโฆ?โ
โSIR SONIC, GET AHOLD OF YOURSELF!!!โ
With the tap of his feet upon the rocky foothold once more, he shook the image free from his mind, the memory fading as quickly as it had come.
โR-RightโฆSorry, Calibur-!!!โ
CLANG!!!
Again, he was not prepared.ย
Percival leapt back.
Again, she was replaced by the girl with the golden hair.
This time, she was crying out to him from the ground as she attempted to flee in fear.
Thoughโฆit was all fuzzyโฆ
Heโฆcouldnโt quite make out what it was she was holdingโฆ
The way she was turned from himโฆ
Herโฆar-!?
CLASH!!!!
Sonic reshuffled his feet, his mind returning to the battle at hand as he and Percival came to a stand-still. Blade scraped upon trembling blade as the two locked eyes. He saw it, the amber glow from beneath her visor.
Thatโs right.
Thisโฆwasnโt Eveโฆ
Heโฆwas allowed to defend himselfโฆ
He had to!
Shing!
Clatter!!
In one swift strike, heโd taken advantage of her hubris, knocking her rapier clean from her grip. It flew through the steaming air, landing just as gracefully as its owner even with a soft clatter.
Percival took a knee.
โH-HowโฆHow did youโฆ?โ

Sonic gulped, โP-Percivalโฆ?โ At least she was completely disarmed unlike the previously downed knight.
A silver frown gleaned against the sacred swordโs surface, โMy ladyโฆโ The visor clanged as it lifted, revealing panicked golden irises against the lavender fur beneath, โAre youโฆalright?โย

The blue and white hedgehog shifted uncomfortably, his eyes darting to the side momentarily in guilt as he swallowed back the lump forming in his throat, โL-LookโฆIโฆdonโt know what your relationship is with โhis highnessโ but whatever youโre feeling is-โ
โSilenceโฆโ
Sonicโs eyes darted back towards the cat in a concerned flavor of shock, โH-Huh?โ
The silver-tipped claws of the armor scraped against the charred brimstone of the earth as her hackles raised, โI SAID SILEEEEEENCE!!!!โ Her tears evaporated against the burning heat of her soul, โYOU DO NOT KNOW HOW DILIGENTLY I HAVE WORKED TO GET TO WHERE I AM!!!!โ She charged, the flaming swipe of her claws meeting nothing but air as the hedgehog ducked, โYOU DO NOT KNOW WHAT THEY HAVE CALLED ME!!!!โย

Sonic gasped, barely leaping out of the way in time to not be struck.

She leapt at him like a lioness cornering her prey.
โARTHUR-!!!!!โ
She turned against the light of the lava pit below.
โHE GAVE ME PERMISSION TO EXIST!!!!!!โ
Sonic performed a half-pirouette, backing once more against the edge of the foothold.
โPERCIVAL WAIT A-WUH WHOAAAH!!!โ
He stumbled โagain unused to such swift and ungraceful movements along the soles of his feetโ barely stabilizing along the edge as bits of grain dropped into the fiery pit below.
โAND YET YOUโฆ.โ
Sonic held out a hand for her to stop.
โPERCIVAL WAIT!!!!โ
โYOU ARE BUT A KNAVE PRETENDING TO BE A KNIGHT!!!!!โ
She charged him once more.
โHOW COULD YOU BEST ME AT EVERYTHING I EVER TRAINED FOORRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!โ
Sonic dodged.
Percival disappeared over the edge.

The fire in her soul quelled as she realized her situation.
Ahโฆvanquished at last by my own inner flameโฆ
She closed her eyes, recalling the kind man reaching out for her hand from her cage, the man who never once paid mind to her raggedy, wild appearance.
Arthurโฆmy kingโฆI have failed youโฆ
She reached out back to him.
Farewellโฆ

He took it.
Percivalโs eyes opened wide, โH-HUH!!?โ
But what she saw was so unexpectedโฆ
The hedgehog before herโฆ
His grunts of exertion as he dug the sacred blade into the side of the molten cliffโฆ

Finally, they stopped, the knight of flames dangling from the villainous heroโs grasp like a trembling leaf to a branch. She stared at him, numerous questions in her soul rising like the heat of the world below, and yet no answers were truly needed. He had saved her. There was no other way to see things.
Even so, she dared to ask.
โWhyโฆWhy did youโฆ?โ
The Hero of Mobius flashed a cocky โalbeit sweat-soaked, heat-exhaustedโ grin from above, โI-I guess you could say Iโm theโฆโK-Knight on a Whimโ heh heh!โ He grunted once more as he fought to maintain a solid grip on Caliburnโs hilt in spite of his soaked palms, โN-Nowโฆthink you canโฆh-help me pull us upโฆ?โ A few heavy breaths escaped him.
Thanks to Percivalโs flames, the pair of sword-wielding warriors managed to rocket themselves to safety with little effort. This time, however, Sonic did not manage to stay on his feet, the two tumbling ungracefully from each otherโs grasp the instant his first foot hit solid ground. He remained flat against his quills as the bottom edge of Percivalโs visor ate dirt.

Suddenly, Percivalโs ears picked up on the sound of laughter โgenuine laughterโ coming from the spiky, furry being behind her. She turned, confusion the only emotion seemingly allowed on her face at the time.
โYouโฆWhy are you so merryโฆ?โ
Sonic caught his breath, a couple of tears finding relief along the corner of his exhausted gaze, โJ-JustโฆWOW!!โ He fought to catch his breath a bit more, exhaling deeply the moment it was all over, โWhat a fight, am I right? We should totally do this again sometime with less ,you know, โdEaTh UpOn My HoNoUrโ stuff!โ He deepened his already gruff voice in a tone somewhat mocking the echidna he called a brother.
Yep. Definitely the strangest knight she ever met.
Could she honestly even call him a knight?
โS-Surely you jest!!โ Sonic laughed once more, โSir Knight, you bested me!! It is no longer my right to serve at his majestyโs side and you DARE continue to mock my existence as if we were merely JOUSTING!!?โ
โHeh hehโฆโ Sonic flopped his furry quills out behind him once more before flopping back again as if laying on a spiky pillow, โYeeeup!โย
He smiled.
Percival grew furious at his indignancy.
โGOOD SIR, YOU MAKE A MOCKERY OF WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A KNIGHT!!!โ
โGood.โ
Percival jolted, โW-What did you just say?โ
The hedgehogโs eyes glazed over in despondency, his voice falling calm as he stared up beyond the ashen atmosphere, โYou heard me.โ His mind wandered to Gawain and the mentally seared image of his blade drawn to his neck, โIโm not a knight, Percival, and I never claimed to be one.โ The ghost of his friend leaned over him, glaring at his beastly figure in disgust, โIโm not even a proper hero. Maybe a monster too like you said? Honestly, I donโt know what I am anymore.โ
The blazing catโs shoulders relaxed for once, her perfect mask of a knight slipping again as the being before her granted her the same permissions as his majesty all those years ago, โAโฆmonster?โ She frowned, โThenโฆwhy save me?โ
โ...โ Sonic frowned, โI justโฆdonโt wanna see anyone else dieโฆโ
Againโฆhe had to swallow the pit threatening to choke him like the squirming girl in his grasp back in Adabat.
โโAgainโ?โ Percivalโs brow furrowed, โYouโฆlost someone precious to you?โ
The ghost slowly shook her head.
Sonic felt sick to his stomach.
โY-Yeahโฆโ He sighed, his gaze fleeing hers and dropping to the golden heart reflecting the light of the fiery chasm back to him, โItโsโฆnothingโฆโ His gaze danced to the side as his momentarily jovial voice dropped to a melancholic hum, โDonโt worry about itโฆโ
Caliburn remained attentive.
That was something he knew the hedgehog would need to address later.

Sonic bolted upwards at the noise as Percival readied her flames once more โwithout shame this time. Now sitting upright, his gaze fell upon the dying remnants of a dusty whirlwind โone that resembled a gust of dried flowers and smelled just as such. A familiar figure emerged from within, Sonicโs eyes widening in recognition at the bulbous point of her staff and the evershaded violet of her braided hair.
The villain of the story leapt to his feet, โMerlina!โ
The mage smiled with kind, silver eyes, like those faded of the wandering dead.

I actually have a ton of pretty neat "oubliette" moments for Alter Chaos.
I'll share some now (spoilers through the Avalon Saga if you care):
In the OG draft of the series, Chris was NOT a good brother and straight up just ABANDONED Eve on Mobius at the end of Metarex. I just hated the idea of bolstering my oc at his expense and rewrote his whole character once I decided to actually write/publish the series in 2023.
The OG Moonbeast ending was NOT subtle about its overarching metaphor. I had to cut at least 15 lines from the drafts because after the Adabat scene Sonic's character veered so hard he drove off a cliff and ended up in another dimension (not literally). "The Greatest Gift" was by FAR the worst offender of this.
The whole Seven Rings finale with Eve and the sword originally happened in Avalon. Originally, she just never got powers and only had them in Moonbeast in a fun, slice of life kind of way. I actually never knew how to rearrange this plot line to make sense until I finished playing P5R and (very passionately) thought up Time Keeper in 2021.
When deciding to make this series in 2023, I actually considered cutting Eve from the plot entirely because I didn't want to make it all about me. My mind changed though when I saw the opportunity to write her in a way anyone could insert themselves into. Plus it was a fun challenge to make her feel like an organic part of the world from the get-go.
Sneak preview: I recently was writing up late-series stuff (Metal Virus and Tower I believe) and it hit like a truck just how little I developed any characters outside of the main duo. Now I'm going back and having to flesh out everyone else (ESPECIALLY Silver). It's kind of fun to be back in the imagining/thinking phase of development again.
The Time Keeper Saga is fully written. I could post it right now actually. I just don't feel like I did what I feel is the best (and one of the most important) sagas justice. That's why I'm making the game duology.
In an original draft of Metarex, Chris dies. The rocket was built by Eggman like in the show and he just...blows it up. In one variation, nobody even knows until the remains of the crash are found years later. I ended up scrapping this whole plot line for a couple of reasons: it was too dark without any real purpose, it ruined the tone of the saga/series that I was going for, and really funny/wholesome post-series ideas that would be impossible without him (there's your spoiler snippet for the day lol).
There was a plot line in Seven Rings that still gets mentioned in the final version that explored the true dangers of holding on to each ring for too long. The idea is that eventually one is consumed by that one emotion to the degree of becoming that emotion. Once they are too far gone, the ring will just absorb them for energy. Each glowing marking was going to be revealed as representing a soul lost to the ring's effects. A scene was cut in which Eve nearly fell to the ring of sadness's effects just by holding it for a couple of seconds. It was meant to visualize how powerful the darkest depths of her mind truly are and why she's so scared of being alone. Honestly, I think I might still write this one out because it's actually pretty awesome and I'm a little bummed I didn't follow through on it originally. I think I was trying to keep the saga from being any more dark and death-centric than it was (plus Sharah having her moment to acknowledge that emotions are okay and saving these deeper things for...later...) but missed opportunity in my book.
Moonbeast was called "The Unleashed Saga" when I first started writing in 2023. It featured the wholesome Chip plot line like in the game and was more slice-of-life just with the ending bit of Eve falling into Gaia's core (but this time so Sonic could pull himself to safety). There was a Christmas episode where Eve (back when she could fly with her powers) did air ballet and the group enjoyed celebrations across the world (it was cute). Eventually, I came up with a more concrete plot and Chip played a more serious role once regaining his memories (apart from being the one to blurt out Sonic's secret, but that's for another Alt. Scenario).
It wasn't until October 2023 (around making Darkest Terror) when randomly saying "Huh? Why does Mephiles kind of look like a beta werehog?" that I added him to the plot. I'm still surprised to this day that no one else from what I've seen has made the same connection and I stand by it being the greatest addition I could have ever added to the plot.
The Chip plot line was cut in early 2024 when I finally asked the question "What else could I change?" I've seen nearly every other Unleashed fic do the same story (based on the game) and wanted to be unique.
Lia and Sonic's rivalry was based on that one cutscene from Unleashed after the phoenix fight. I just thought it would be funny and maybe add a bit of spice to the plot. Plus, expecting "Chip" to be the bad guy in an "epic twist" was the PERFECT red herring to distract from all of the Mephiles teasing happening on the side (hehehe...).
I'll reblog if I come up with any more. Maybe I'll sit down later and draw/write some stuff out.
The series originally ended with the Tower of Death Saga (sometimes called the Tower of Memories Saga in development). I only added New Horizons (Frontiers) after finishing the free Final Horizon story update. Long story short I hated it so badly (and still do) that I swore vengeance and reframed the plot of the whole series around it (which you can gather from the first chapter but take from that what you will ๐).

So I was digging back through the Discord (long story) and I forgot my one friend had the BEST reactions to Time Keeper when reading the written draft back in 2024 ๐๐๐ (these scenes will be in Act 2 of the game for reference)
