i think i am going to have to rant a tiny bit about this too, because it’s related to the... numerous faults i found with the show’s conclusion and overall treatment of their characters.
i think i could have gotten behind allurance if allura basically wasn’t on the rebound. there’s a lot to think about here.
first and foremost, she was never given time to properly grieve. i believe i’ve already commented on this once before, but allura’s writing is... questionable in certain areas. i do not particularly like that she reacts upon feelings in certain situations and not upon logic, and her reaction to lotor’s seeming “betrayal” felt cheap to me as a result. she’s always been written like that, and it will never not feel cheap to me--as though it’s essential she has to act that way--because it’s like the plot or that particular story cannot progress if she doesn’t behave... well, impulsively, for lack of a better descriptor. allura is an intelligent woman and it doesn’t do her justice to have her be in her feelings on certain issues and jeopardizing everything else in the process. she is better than that.
but, let’s say that we keep this: that lotor is dead and she couldn’t go back for him. she didn’t properly deal with that situation whatsoever. do i think that she loves lance? absolutely... but not the way he wanted her to, and not the way he deserved. there are a lot of lingering feelings and thoughts, which is easy to discern when you think about how this season was handled, and i don’t feel as though lance should have been caught in the middle of that. lance had wonderful character development up until this point, he learned to handle his insecurities, and how to forge better dynamics with the rest of his team. he has grown a lot from season 1, and i was so incredibly proud of him. i think that allura and lance had a very solid friendship as the months and years progressed, and that if allurance was meant to be, it should have been written that way. it should have unfolded as episodes went on, it should have been obvious that it was intended. instead, we got jealousy from lance... and lance returning to his insecurities, and he deserved so much better than that, after everything all of them have been through together as a team.
it was clear that the writers wanted to pair lotor and allura together. i saw it coming a mile away, but allurance did not have that development; and, it was clear it didn’t have the same commitment, dedication, and love. it irks me tremendously, how the writers made me feel as though they just bulldozed through the rest of their plot to conclude it; it feels like they figured that if they couldn’t make everyone happy, they would make everyone unhappy.
