they’re the villains in a rom-com for breaking the main character’s heart, they’re the subject of a break up song, they’re the people who are expected to always reciprocate feelings im harmful tropes like the hanahaki flower trope, they’re the ones labelled as awful people for deciding they no longer want to be in a relationship. it’s really obvious in media portrayals, especially in songs. as someone who highly enjoys music, i hate listening to a song about unrequited love and how someone broke their heart because they broke up with them. the only song i’ve listened to that’s given the point of view of the other person is F.R.I.E.N.D.S. by Anne-Marie, compared to the hundreds and thousands of songs painting the other person as a heartbreaker simply because they just… don’t feel the same way.

as an aro, listening to things like that hurt because i’m always thinking about how i’ve made someone else feel bad because i don’t feel the same way, which is absolutely wild! why am i being demonized and ashamed because someone else has feelings that i don’t reciprocate? am i expected to suffer and be unhappy for the sake of someone else, like some hero? yeah heartbreak hurts, but holding someone else accountable for how you feel when all they’ve done is not feel the same way (obviously not in cheating or other similar instances) is a pretty awful thing to do.
