Fire crackles behind him, but he shivers. It takes until the fire reaches the embers and he’s cold to the core, cold to the point that he’s sure he’ll never be warm again, and the smell of smoke (too sweet, and he doesn’t want to think about why), until he’s able to mutter to himself: “I am Neil Abram Josten. My birthday is March 31st. I can’t be deceived.”

(Neil may be blessed, but it's not enough. He's not enough, not without a catalyst.)

Neil could see Andrew out of the corner of his eye barreling towards them, but he was too late. Riko’s racquet hit the side of Neil's head and the resounding crack that went through the court silenced everything. Neil registered a blinding pain before everything went dark. He was sprawled on the floor, head bent at an unnatural angle and the side of his face broken and bleeding. Everyone was staring, hardly breathing, until Andrew reached Riko and shattered his arm with his own racquet.

Neil was dead.

It’s not until Mary dies that she finally does settle. Neil looks away from the car, dazzled by firelight and the sense memory of her daemon breaking apart, and finds silvery speckled fur with jet-black points and reddish eyes the same colour as Nathaniel Wesninski’s hair. Just like that, he knows she won’t shift again.

He counts the hours left in a day, the minutes left in an hour, the seconds between sunrise and sunset. The world keeps turning, and with it, he wakes up, he eats, he smokes, he plays a sport he doesn’t care about, he guards his things, he keeps his promises, he breathes. Each intake of breath ticks off the time he has left - the space between him and death.

But against his will, his clock begins to run on a different schedule.
