The late afternoon sun filtered through the blinds of the dorm room, casting long, golden stripes across the floorboards. It was a rare quiet Saturday, and neither James nor Regulus felt any urge to break the silence.
James was stretched out on his unmade bed, propped up by a mountain of pillows. A paperback book was balanced open on his chest, though his eyes had long since drifted away from the pages. He was staring lazily at the ceiling, one foot dangling off the edge of the mattress, rhythmically swinging to a beat only he could hear.
On the other side of the room, Regulus was curled up in a beanbag chair that looked entirely too large for him. A massive, oversized knit sweater swallowed his frame, the sleeves pushed back just enough to expose his wrists as he turned the page of his textbook. A half-empty mug of tea sat on the desk next to him, long cooled but still comforting in its presence.
"You're staring," Regulus murmured, not looking up from his reading. His voice was low, a quiet rasp that fit the stillness of the room.
"I'm appreciating," James corrected, a slow grin spreading across his face. He folded his arms behind his head, shifting slightly. "Thereβs a difference."
Regulus huffed a small, breathy laugh, the corner of his mouth twitching upward for a fraction of a second before his expression smoothed back into its usual calm. He turned another page, the sharp scrape of paper the loudest sound in the room.
"Don't you have an essay due on Monday?" Regulus asked, his tone laced with mild, fond exasperation.
"That's a problem for Sunday-night James," James replied easily, closing his eyes. "Right now, Friday-night James is still in charge of relaxation operations. And he says we stay exactly like this."
Regulus didn't argue. He simply shifted deeper into the beanbag, letting the quiet warmth of the afternoon settle over them both.
