The full moon always leaves me feeling overwhelmed. Sometimes, this is a powerful feeling. Other times, like today, I feel exhausted, as though my cup is too full, as though my pot has been too watered, as though the universe is sending me signals that I’m too slow to process in due time. I’m drifting through my paperwork, lost in a sea of lethargy that teems with energy. It’s too much for me to pin anything down. I am quiet and peaceful with the feeling of completion and fullness that the moon provides me but I am also weighed down with knowledge and the fullness of those around me.

Oh, summer. I spend it perpetually tan and often waterlogged. Nothing makes me feel better than to go surfing. The place I would most love to surf, the place I dream of surfing, the place I WILL one day surf when I am ready would be the beautiful crystal waters of Fiji. I fell in love with Fiji when my family and I traveled there when I was a young girl. Four generations of strong southern women lounged on the beach and enjoyed one of the most peaceful places on Earth. Not only did this place have something we all loved- for my great grandmother it was hunky young men who fawned over her and her eccentricities, my grandmother was captivated by the history of the neighboring village, my mother went out to watch the fishermen catch her the lobsters she would eat later in the day, and I? I tried everything I could on the water- kayaking, snorkeling, going out in a glass bottom boat and taking my disposable waterproof camera to document the sea creatures I discovered. I watched sea urchins, starfish, and nursing sharks. I also got sun poisoning. It was the best time of my life. That was the week I learned how peaceful my soul could be, and as I grew up I tried to return to that time in my mind often. Now I live on the west coast in San Diego, and I find those moments every time I take my board out, but one day I'll go to the place where my water obsession began, the one place where my family was peaceful, and where I know my great grandmother Gonnie will be with me as I go out for some stoke. One day I'll get to Fiji again- my great grandmother’s favorite vacation spot, spreading her ashes and celebrating her life as I surfed the magical waters of the South Pacific.
