In Wiccan traditions, the right hand corresponds to the God and projective power whilst the Goddess and receptive power is associated with the left. For me, this right hand, projective power/help is about the familiar, a partner in the practice of magick.
For a magickal practitioner, a familiar can be any animal with which the individual feels an affinity. Because animals are sensitive to vibrations to the unseen world, they are useful as a psychic sensor, indicating the presence of negative energy by their behaviour.
Also, due to their close affinity with the spirit realm, they bring added energy to any magickal workings. Some familiars will approach an individual during a time of difficulty to offer aid or a practitioner will send out a psychic call to attract a suitable one.
An overwhelming feeling of kinship will signify the discovery of a new familiar. Cats, dogs, birds, snakes or toads can be familiars, although some familiars are not confined to physical bodies and are spirit, able to move about more freely. The presence of these spirit familiars is often experienced as a voice, vision or strong feeling of peace.
