i actually really love that yuna is the one shit talking other hockey players and focusing on the money and importance of what shane being on the ice means, and she is highlighted as the biggest fan of the team shane plays for, while david is the one who scolds her for swearing in a restaurant and just wants to hear about shane’s day.

it’s subtle but it really does make heated rivalry stand out from almost any other piece of media about sports. constantly there is a man (a father or a father figure usually) fighting for their younger prodigy to realize how much they’re worth and how much this really means while their mother is the grounding figure who wants to know how their day went outside of sports and what’s going on with the relationships in their lives. it’s actually kind of groundbreaking i don’t think i’ve seen it literally anywhere else.

that’s also why i think it was important, and honestly the best outcome for shane, for david to find out about ilya and shane first rather than yuna. shane freaking out and saying ‘oh my god my mom’ wasn’t just him freaking out over needing to come out to both his parents, it was him freaking out about telling his mentor, manager, biggest supporter of his hockey career AND his mom that he was sleeping with the enemy. for a decade
