I’m so interested in Grace’s background beyond just his years teaching at school and working in the Petrova Taskforce

Like, what happened to his parents? Assuming that he become a teacher by the time he’s at the very least, 27-30ish, that leaves us with the conclusion that his parents have prematurely died because he never ever mentions or brings them up. Possibly a side effect of the amnesia, but I doubt so, in the book, even his friend Marissa got mentioned so it truly does leave it as a mystery of what happened to his parents.

And even before that, what about his time in the science field? He’s somebody who’s pretty easy to get along with, did he have friends who turned against him after his PhD dissertation? I can’t imagine how horrifying it’d be to get so shunned and defunded, to the point of getting kicked out of a lifelong career dream and field you love.

It is very important to me that Adrian absolutely loves Grace. They get to Erid and Rocky is so nervous about them liking each other but he never should have worried because the two just… click.

And now Rocky and Adrian equally love Grace. They always argue over who gets to bring him to their work (Adrian likes to have him for feedback for the bio-dome and Rocky likes to have someone to talk to while he tinkers). They both watch over him when he sleeps and Grace wakes up to two Eridians very, very close to his face.

They’re the couple with the third wheeling friend, except they are all equally happy about the arrangement. Rocky and Adrian go on a date, just the two of them, one time and get asked by no less than six people if Grace is okay.

Just Rocky and Adrian being soulmates and Grace being their platonic soulmate.

the concept of percy and annabeth watching a marine life documentary together and annabeth is sobbing because the narrator is discussing climate change effects while sad music plays and percy is giggling because the octopus and shark have been calling each other sea slurs in almost all the footage

fyi to those of you who still haven't read the phm book, you're missing out on some pretty hardcore Yearning after grace & rocky part ways. there's whole chapters of grace like, staring sadly after rocky's departing ship in the petrovascope every single day while thinking mournfully about how great his best friend is and how much he wishes rocky was there, before doing an insane amount of complicated relativistic math to calculate the exact moment when he'll no longer be able to see the blip-a's light in the distance bc he already misses rocky so much. it's great stuff

the book scene where dubois and shapiro tell grace they’re having sex is really interesting. it’s not just that’s he’s uncomfortable talking about sex (although he very much is) it’s that he doesn’t understand why they would have sex if one of them is guaranteed to die in space soon. they kind of included this in the movie (when he asks stratt why everybody is partying and hooking up if they’re all gonna die)

there’s another line that stood out to me in the book, where amnesiac grace initially finds his dead crewmates, and he goes “i hope they weren’t friends of mine!” which imo is a crazy thing to say upon finding two corpses

it’s not just that grace avoids forming close relationships, it’s that he avoids it (in part) in order to avoid experiencing loss. really interesting character trait especially knowing he has no immediate family (did they die? is that why he’s like this?) not even a pet (is he scared the pet will die?)

probably one of the reasons why i love phm so much is that it's a movie literally about the merits of platonic love and platonic soulmates. enough of these stupid romance movies gimme two characters whose friendship fucking saved both their planets, and who love each-other so fucking much that they would sacrifice themselves for the other over and over again. finally, a movie that shows that all love is powerful, not just that between romantic partners.
