i think my hot take that lowkey shouldn’t even be a hot take is that it wasn’t solely mike’s fault for his relationships with will and el being turbulent. el was lying about her life and also not properly communicating how she was feeling in her letters about his lack of affection. and when he did try to show her support, she invalidated his feelings by saying he didn’t get it. and yes i acknowledge it was different for her, but my point is more so that he did make an attempt at connection and vulnerability even if it wasn’t perfect (because they’re like 14, nobody is good at communication when they’re 14). and will, while understandably upset at not receiving letters also did not reach out to mike (im very frustrated that they didn’t have mike tell will that he called incessantly to talk to him but never got through). so yeah i understand why mike was very confused when he got to california because he thought everything was fine.
note that this isn’t me bashing will and el. they’re all young, traumatized kids navigating romance for the first time;it’s always rocky in those first time relationships. i love will and el and understand why they were hurt. i’m just saying mike gets a disproportionate amount of blame for the way these relationships panned out in season 4 when it was a combination of miscommunication from everyone.
