something I think people have a hard time grasping conceptually both when it comes to talking about fiction as well as real life is that there's a difference between being technically cause-and-effect responsible for something vs something being your fault. if I never walked anywhere near a street again then I would never have a chance to get hit by a car, but this does not mean that it's someone's own fault if they get hit by a car while crossing a street because they never made the simple and savvy choice to never cross streets. if person X tells person Y something about me that X thinks is perfectly innocuous but makes Y get mad at me later, it is not X's fault that Y is mad at me even though they literally caused it to happen, Y is one who is at fault for being mad at me due to being the one who is mad at me. and so on and so forth.

I actually think it's incredibly important to understand that "sharing your experience with a piece of media and whether you'd recommend it" and "giving constructive feedback to help a creator improve their craft" are two entirely different skill sets. and someone doing the first shouldnt be responded too as if they're doing the second

there's a p common attitude in fandom spaces (fandom in general, not a specific one) that's like "why care about canon, or the characters being ooc? we're here to play with the dolls any way we like" and as much as i obviously am a person who thinks about canon a lot in theory i'm into that. in practice though when popular fanon takes things in a wildly different direction from canon so often it's in the service of taking something that was originally canonically weird and interesting and making it blander. it's flattening a complex character into a broad archetype i've seen a million times before, it's taking two characters with a complicated canonical relationship and writing them in a way where you could find-and-replace the names with any other popular migratory slash fandom pairing and the fic would make as much if not more sense. if you're going to break away from canon at least do something interesting? don't make it less weird? i feel like i'm watching someone take a really beautiful expensive cut of wagyu steak and grind it into hamburger to cook it well done and cover it in ketchup
