His breathing echoed between the tiled walls, mingling with the sounds his memories revived: wooden swords clashing in time with their shared laughter, an encouraging voice, the warmth of the setting sun on their sweat-damp skin, the sweet scent of nearby orchards… and Yin Yu’s radiant, happy face, one of the last images he had preserved of his mentor before his ascension to the heavens.

He could not remember seeing him laugh like that afterward.

Had he even smiled during his absence…?
