Reporting from page 1405:
"Qi Yan leaned on Ding You as she asked weakly: "Can a woman have a child with a woman?" "
Qi Yan out here really asking the important questions. Sigh 😪 So much for 'two Firsts and a Flower', smartass
let me blindly love qi yan and shen zechuan. they’ve never done anything wrong in their lives.
. 💃🌙✨
Officially at the halfway mark of jwqs 🥳
So far:
I'm really impatient for Qi Yan's revenge to come to fruition. I am enjoying the slow build-up and her political schemes, but I'm itching for her to deal more damage already. Prefferably not to herself this time - seeing her set herself on fire was crazy.
The author keeps saying (in the author notes) that there will be a happy ending and i am so confused by that. I have a decent imagination, but I can't conjure up any scenario in which anyone at all turns out happy in the end . They are all very fucked up, bad peaople with vary fucked up shitty lives. I don't want to see those people get a happy ending in any capacity and I don't even know what that would look like anyways.
Needless to say, i'm not rooting for Qi Yan/Jingnu relationship. I think it's very well written and captivating. I definitely want to see how it plays out, but I will sooner bite my own ear than admit they could ever make each other happy. Toxic feels like too mild of a word.
My favourite part of the book is seeing Qi Yan mind completely crumble under the guilt, the responsibility and rage and a plethora of other feelings. Her dissociations are portrayed very well. I adored that scene where she makes Jingnu learn 3 million character - very tense, very scary, very good.
I also love that she doesn't actualy have any external drivers for her revenge, it's all just in her head.
50% more to go, maybe i'll completely change my mind about things

Everytime i start to forget that Qi Yan is clinically insane and entirely irredeemable, she will make people dig they own graves or attempt to drown a 4 hour old fella - all just to remind me again. How nice of her!
pdl historical novels are intense political tomes about characters forced to change in irreversible ways in the pursuit of carving out a place for themselves, because if they show fear— they die. There’s also that transmigration one.
Me when Qi Yan found that little orphan girl on her architect side-quest: yasss, let's fucking go! Xiao Die is so back! i've been praying for meimei to turn out be alive and my prayers were answered!!
Me when I saw what Xiao-Die plotline was going to entail: um, exscuse me, i would like to send this back, please. I only signed up for a silly goofy revenge-thirsty butch with dissociating psyche. This is not what we agreed upon, this is way to fucking much, get me outta here
