Puncturing the carotid will do. Don’t have him try to slit his own throat, trust me, I’ve seen it fail. Instead have your character touch the center of his throat, over his Adam’s apple (even women have them, just smaller). Have him slide his fingers across until he feels a pulse. Then have him put the shard in, and remove it.

Note: this will be an extremely fast, EXTREMELY bloody death, but even if an officer was there at the moment it happened, it’s still likely that the character will bleed to death.

Stab wounds in the neck are tricky. Sometimes they’re pretty instantly lethal, especially if the carotid arteries are involved. Sometimes even people who are actively trying to die won’t succeed–I’ve had a patient who actively tried to cut his own throat, and cut through the muscles at the front of the neck without endangering his life.

Stab wounds to the back, lateral parts of the neck would be very survivable, though, because there’s mostly just muscle and bone. The trapezius, and sternocleidomastoid (strap) muscles are big, and thick, and protective, and the spine itself is pretty resistant to stab wounds, especially lateral ones.

If you want something life threatening, but survivable, consider a stab directly to the front of the neck, right into the trachea (windpipe). It would cause a lot of bleeding and sputtering of blood, and gasping, but any good ER doc could turn the sound into a tracheostomy and save the patient.

In a medical facility, a stab to the carotids MIGHT be survivable, but they bleed so fast it would take A LOT of quick work: pressure, sutures, probably blood transfusions.

So to sum up: back lateral neck is meaty and survivable, trachea stab is dramatic and survivable, carotids are VERY unlikely to be survivable but it is possible.

Hey @haunt-my-miles . Yes, it is possible to stab someone in the eye without killing them (with a shallow stab), but they will probably not see the stabby object in the affected eye; they will most likely simply be blind on that side. On the other side they may see the stabby, though. Gruesome!

As for cutting the throat, I’ve seen multiple slash wounds to the neck (including self-inflicted), but even with significant effort and clear attempts at homicide/suicide, have not succeeded in cutting either the trachea or the carotid. There’s a lot of musculature that protects the trachea, plus some pretty thick cartilage. (When we talk about surgical airways, we actually talk about the “cartilaginous cage” around the cricothyroid membrane.)

However, it is definitely possible to slit someone’s throat. It’s also possible for a man to try to cut his own throat, excise about half his neck, and be sitting there calmly and talking when you get there in a room full of bloody knives.
