As much as my cat loves my cackles and commentary—agreeing with everything I say—and my husband just nods and smiles, I thought I’d share my thoughts here as I dive back into the ACOTAR world. This will be my second time reading the series from years ago to prepare for the upcoming releases in October 2026 and January 2027.
This space is dedicated to my opinions and interpretations of the text. If you don’t agree with a take, that doesn’t mean you’re right and I’m wrong. It doesn’t mean I don’t know how to read. It doesn’t mean I’m a cog in the patriarchal machine. It just means I have a different world outlook based on how I was raised, how I was loved, and how I see the world today. If you cannot respect different opinions, please move on to your preferred content.
I have read all of SJM’s series and I’m aware where all of the worlds stand, know a character’s canon fate, and the twists and turns, but most details from ACOTAR are a blur. For that reason, some commentary may reveal spoilers for other series. Beware.
I’m truly not expecting anyone to follow this account, and it’s mostly for me to record my thoughts and revel in how hilarious I am. But if you’ve read this far…

“She’d been made differently, from something harder and stronger than bone and blood. She was as different from the humans around us as I had become.” ACOTAR Ch 28
“But Nesta’s mind was so entirely her own; she had put up such strong walls—of steel and iron and Ashwood—that even a High Lord’s magic couldn’t pierce them.” ACOTAR Ch 30
“My hateful, cold sister had been willing to brave Prythian to rescue me.” ACOTAR Ch 30
“There were no limits to what Nesta might do, what she might make of herself once she found a place to call her own. I prayed I would be lucky enough to someday see it.” ACOTAR Ch 31
I know there are Nesta haters out there, but I don’t know how you can read these passages from ACOTAR and not understand her character. She is not a one dimensional cold character. She is guarded and protective and cunning. She shows her love in action, respect, and trust—not words.
If she were a male character, readers would be drooling over her.
I’m not here to yuck on people’s yum, but I think this chapter solidifies why I’m not and have never been a Feyre/Tamlin supporter.
Now out of fear for Feyre’s life, Tamlin is sending her away. She doesn’t want to leave and even her saying: “Did I do something wrong” then paired with “I pushed Tamlin onto the bed … pinning him as if it would somehow keep me from leaving…”
TO ME, It feels very juvenile, desperate, and almost subordinate? I understand she’s 19. She doesn’t understand what’s really happening with the blight, but it’s not heartbreaking scene between lovers to me. Again, I feel no emotional ties between them as a couple. Her not wanting to leave is paired with her thinking of how bad life is back in the human lands and wanting to be on Tamlin’s body. Nothing about his character, or how he makes her feel, or significant moments between them. It’s just from the comforts he and the spring court provided her.
It feels like this relationship has been youthful flirty glances and chaste kisses through a montage of time with no depth. For him to end the chapter with “I love you, thorns and all.” It’s like why? Do you love HER or the idea of her? Or love taking care of her?
I think Tamlin and Feyre are what they WANT in a life but not what they NEED. I don’t feel the tug and pull or the challenge to be better people. It’s very fairytale and not “real”. And as we see under the mountain, when things get real, it’s not… (I’ll get there soon)
“I’m surprised though: 49 years and no attempts to save yourself or your lands.” ACOTAR Ch 26
This one hurts. Because what is the excuse? I know no one wants this and there’s a moral weight of choosing the less of two evils, but I can’t remember Tamlin’s reasoning for doing nothing. He was probably doing something in backend here? Was he working with Hybern here already? I can’t remember!
But I like that this line has two tones from Rhys. At first glance, the night courts high lord—Amarantha’s whore—is being his typical ass self. Knowing the underlying story—it’s Rhys goading him to do something. Challenging him for help as the time is ticking.
For him to add:
“Her whore I might be, but not without reason”

The night, seeming to press in closer around him
As if he’s been molded from the night itself
I could have sworn tendrils of star-kissed night trailed in his wake
Love the foreshadowing here
The Great Rite
We love a magic induced orgy. But Lucien’s detailed description has me thinking thoughts
“The magic will seize control of his mind, his body, his soul and turn him into the hunter. It will fill him with his soul purpose: to find the maiden. From their coupling, magic will be released and spread to the Earth, where it will regenerate life in the year to come.”
I think I remember Lucien saying he needed to step into this role as Tamlin refused in ACOWAR. So that tells me it doesn’t have to be the high lord? Or it does bc the spring court doesn’t last long after that. Also where is this magic from? The lands? The mother? Don’t overthink it and it’s just fae magic?
This also has me wanting to see this in action, and curious if we will see Calamai again in future books with Elain? Elain being associated with spring throughout the books, her being associated as a fawn (the stag is hunted), the maiden imagery would also fit her character, and the idea of regenerating life in the lands fits her association with gardening. Who knows.
Two male comparison
We start the chapter with Feyre meeting “the most beautiful man she’s ever seen” and describing his voice as a “lover’s purr” caressing her. He dismisses her back to the Rite and she continues to talk to him, not knowing why.
And then we have her describing Tamlin as:
“I suppose Tamlin was handsome, terribly handsome … his eyes were fine and his mouth beautifully curved and full, and then there was his body, which was… was…”
This is then followed by the hallway scene where it’s all magic, neck bites, and aching breasts. Which on first read, I was not into it! I didn’t like the neck bite and was like wtf dude! We went from timid smiles at dinner to this. Slow your roll.
Again, for me, Feyre and Tamlin are too much lust vs love for me. I’m still not sailing on the ship from first read nor second read.
Body paint
I find it interesting that Feyre notes Tamlin’s chest is painted in whorls of ink and smudges to know exactly where he’s been touched and this is exactly what happens to her later in the book via Rhys as almost a security measure for under the mountain. I don’t know if there’s a compare and contrast with this or it’s just coincidence.

So on my first read of ACOTAR years ago, by this point in the book (chapter 18) I was shipping Feyre with Lucien. I really didn’t care for Tamlin or feel anything between them, even though I knew that’s the pairing the author was focusing on.
And here we have this chapter dedicated to skinny dipping and Lucien’s backstory and Tamlin with Feyre just feels very bland, superficial, and just curious physical attraction than something deep to me. Whereas Feyre’s inner thoughts regarding Lucien are more emotionally tied.
On second reread, I feel the same. More so on appreciating Lucien and Feyre’s friendship, but even knowing what’s to come and Tamlin’s story, I just don’t feel anything between them—no chemistry or page turning hope they get together.
“… faceless woman dragging her bloodred nails across my throat, splitting me open bit by bit. She kept asking for my name, but every time I tried to speak, my blood bubbled out of the shallow wounds on my neck, choking me.” ACOTAR Ch17
Great foreshadowing for Amarantha through Feyre’s dream, but it makes me wonder if Amarantha knows a human is in the spring court. I don’t remember a lot from this book and trying to remember. It’s making me think all of the darker fae creatures attacking back to back is Amarantha sending them to stop the curse from breaking.
“I am a member of no Court. I am older than the High Lords, older than Prythian, older than the bones of this world” ACOTAR Ch 14
I’ve seen some theorize that a character from TOG is the Suriel, reincarnated, solely based off of the need for a cloak. But I think the Suriel’s quote above mixed with the knowledge the books are happening in parallel with Aelin’s red star in ACOSF, ends this theory.
Crazy how many theories I’ve come across that the fandom has turned to canon over the long acotar wait, but now going back to the text I’m realizing how outlandish some of these theories are and make no sense in context.
The fae are primal beings—they feel more, feel the need to protect more, smell others more…
Tamlin, I would argue, is even more primal than most as he’s a shifter. Other high lords have their inner beast chained back, but Tamlin is both beast and man. Sitting at the dining table, his claw naturally comes out to stir his drink. It’s a part of him.
Now, I’m not going to break down the modern moral pedestal that some readers hold to these fantastical primal fae—can’t be avoided in ACOMAF—but I do find it interesting that some fans say Tamlin was a used plot device in ACOMAF to just make Rhys look good. Make Tam the bad guy out of nowhere. Well… just from these early chapters of ACOTAR, the hints are there. That impulsive beast (violence) needing to come out.
Chapter 9 he offers to give Feyre a tour of the grounds. She says no and notes: “Tamlin clenched his hands into fists as if fighting against the claws itching to burst out”
Then in chapter 10, after Feyre and Lucien had a close call with the Bogge, Lucien is already on guard telling Tamlin the bad news. Tamlin is bending silverware, his claws jumping out. “I tried not to tremble at the contained fury, and how his canines seemed to lengthen…”
I know what’s happening beyond Feyre’s knowledge, I know the timed stress they’re under, and the weight on Tamlin, but that feeling of being on eggshells, the beast’s fury, the impulsive destruction of items… it was always there.
**this is not me saying Tamlin is bad, evil, blah blah. He’s a complex character. But his inner fury was not a write in. It’s always been there.
“Didn’t your mother tell you anything about us?” ACOTAR Ch8
I’ve seen some interesting theories from fans reading into this line from Tamlin, suggesting Feyre’s mom has a connection to the fae or witch potential. But I read this line in the context of house roles in this fantasy olden time. Traditionally the fathers worked and the mothers were homemakers, raising their children. That entails storytelling and education as well.

From chapter 2-8 there’s already so many mentions of foxglove specifically. Had to look up the symbolism:
Foxgloves are a mystical and well-loved flower known to be loved by the SĂdhe, the fae, and fairies. Coming across theses dreamy flowers whilst out in nature is a sign that their presence is near.
