You hurriedly got your feet, almost leaving your bag behind on accident as the train slowed to a stop in front of you, the warmth from the dying sun bouncing off the red metal. You decided to enjoy it while it lasted - it got really cold at night around here.Â
Slugging your luggage up into the baggage slot, you passed your ticket to the waiting man at the front - an old man with a curiously mischievous smile. His name tag said "Kapp'n", and you pondered whether that was actually his name, or he had just misspelled "Captain." Maybe he was the conductor?
You noticed immediately that the train was a little more packed than you had expected - well, actually, maybe a lot more. Most of the seats were filled, where were you going to sit? As you trodded down the isle, haphazardly avoiding bumping into anyone, you heard something quite relieving.
"Hey, you! There's a spare seat right here!"
You hurriedly went to sit with the kind stranger. He had dark hair and odd red eyes. "Thank you," you said, flustered, and he merely nodded with a kind smile as you sat beside him, showing off pearly teeth. You were almost jealous.Â
"So," he said, leaning back with his arms behind his head, peering over at you with that same warm, thin-lipped smile, "Where are you headed?"
"[Town Name]," You replied, and he gave you a grin. "Oh! I have a few buddies up there. But... That's a long way. Why're you headed up there?" he inquired and you shrugged your shoulders indifferently, "I'm moving." You said, fiddling with the zipper on your coat, which you had removed to feel the evening warmth. "Oh!"
"Finally leaving the nest, huh?" he teased, and you laughed, nudging him as if you were already great friends who had known eachother for years. "You already know where you're living and everything?" He continued, and you chuckled, a little nervously. That had reminded you of something. "Well..." you started, bashfully, and he gave you a disapproving, almost motherly look. "You're seriously moving without even landing a place first? It'll be really late by the time you get there!"Â
"Ah, I know! ...maybe I'll just camp or something," you replied, and he only threw an arm around your shoulders with a laugh. "Oh, well. You seem like the type to figure these things out on your own. I'm sure everything will work out."
This was oddly reassuring to you, even if he was a stranger, and you laughed with a nod. "What's your name, anyways?" you asked him, and he turned a little red, realizing he was acting all buddy-buddy with somebody he wasn't even on a first-name basis with. "I... Probably should have said that earlier, huh? I'm Rover, what about you?"
"___," You answered, "My name is ___."Â
He chuckled, "___, huh? That's real nice. Kind of... Familiar sounding, too. I wonder where I know that name from." He replied, and you shrugged. "No matter... Oh, It's getting dark out already!" he exclaimed, taking an anxious peek out the window. "Huh, is it really all that late? Last time I checked the clock it was only, like, six PM."
"Yeah... Wierd. Are you going to sleep anytime soon?" he asked, and you shrugged again, "Probably, if you don't mind, that is."
"Not at all," he said, peeking back over his seat. People had already seemed to filter out, and the train had become mostly quiet. "In fact, now seems like a perfect time to do that. Here, get comfortable. I'll wake you up when we get there." He offered, and you frowned a bit, "Are you sure? Won't you get tired?"
He laughed, "Don't worry - I've been here all day. Naps galore." he said, and you reluctantly leaned back, looking out at the sky. "Well... If you say so. Goodnight, Rover."
"Goodnight, ___..."
