To my colleagues, on the death of their studentsâ grandmother(s)
Itâs entirely possible that Iâm just not cool enough to enjoy this âhumorous,â âfictionalâ take on the the phenomena of students manufacturing dead grandmothers during finals week. Maybe itâs because my own grandmother died while I was in college, my grandfather died while I was in grad school, or another grandmother died in while I was in grad school  (are you keeping track? Thatâs two grandmothers). I missed her funeral to go to a postdoc interview, which is what she would have wanted (I got the job). As the child of divorced, remarried parents, I had four grandmothers, so if I was so unlucky as to have more than one die during the course of your class, then, gee, I guess Iâd be in a pickle!
But seriously, I do not get the mentality of seeing your students as adversaries. I donât get the need to dehumanize them with your disdain, to the point where you need to mock them in aggregate in public. There is a time and a place for venting your frustrations with students being dishonest to get a little extra time on the final (even though it never seems to actually bring their grades up, so seriously, let it go). I get that finals week is stressful for faculty, too (even though your future is pretty certain and you have a job, so itâs not like everything is riding on this one grade). But this idea that we need to single out even fictional students for daring to have a life experience that interferes with your routine?
Acclimatrix is not having any of that, thank-you-very-much.
Letâs set aside the fact that grandmothers die for a second (they do, as Iâve already established with my n of 1). Letâs start instead with the premise that students are people, and bad shit happens to people all the time. The problem is, we donât  usually hear about it. This might blow your mind, but: dead grandmothers arenât always dead grandmothers. Grandmothers, as the universal symbol of love and goodness and plausibility, are an un-challenge-able event in the life of a young person. We accept that grandmothers die (at least, we did until the Chronicle updated us on that!). So dead grandmothers may actually be stand-ins for things we wonât accept, canât know about, shouldnât know about, or wonât otherwise believe. Sometimes, dead grandmothers are [CW: a diversity of bad shit coming]:
The time I got assaulted and couldnât tell my teachers, because I couldnât tell anyone, and I needed a reason to explain why I disappeared so suddenly.
The time I had to take three days to go to Canada to have an abortion and was going to miss the midterm, and I didnât know if youâd be okay with that.
The time my boyfriend of six years dumped me and I couldnât stop sobbing, or even take a shower, so of course I couldnât come to class.
The time the person who actually raised me instead of my parents died, and I knew if I said âPatty died,â you wouldnât know what that meant.
The time I thought I might have cancer, and had to go home to the family doctor to get a biopsy from my uterus.
The time I had to drive my little sister to the gynecologist for the first time because our mom wouldnât go with her.
The time I had a miscarriage and I couldnât tell you I was pregnant because I was afraid you would change how you thought of me.
The time I had to testify for my roommate, for a crime she asked me not to talk about because she was afraid sheâd lose her scholarship.
The time I had to work because if I didnât pay my bill, I wouldnât get to graduate on time.
The time I spent the whole semester barely treading water because of a deep depression, panicked when I realized the exam was a week sooner than I thought, and needed a way out.
Not all of those are real, of course. I used a fictional âIâ as a literary device, to draw you in and make you feel empathy for me. You know, like those kids with dead grandmothers do.
If students are lying, you have no way of knowing if itâs because they spent the entire semester playing drunk Candy Crush, or their grandmother actually died, or the dead grandmother is a stand-in for what they cannot tell you. Being a somewhat optimistic person, I would guess that the vast majority of students are telling the truth, at least in one way or the other.
When you mock students because life happens, and they react, you diminish them. And if that student has already struggled â because they donât have a supportive family, or financial resources, because of mental illness or a disabling condition, because there is no one in the classroom who looks like them, or for any other reason â they take double damage.
Students see us. They see how we talk about them. They see how we treat them. They hear us when we say we do not believe them. And when you publish those diminishing thoughts in the Chronicle, even as a âjoke,â they see the authority of the Academy behind you.
That piece should never have been published (itâs a tired trope that literally adds nothing to our discussions of classroom management), but Iâm especially upset that it ended up in the Chronicle. I even have enough empathy to understand the sentiment behind it â I get frustrated, too. But I choose to err on the side of believing in my studentsâ humanity, because I would not be here if someone had not believed in mine, over and over again. Even when I wasnât telling the absolute truth.
ETA: I got so mad I forgot to talk about documentation policies! My take? Donât. Because sometimes the dead grandmother needs to be a stand-in. And even if sheâs really dead, donât make your students cut out their obituary from the town paper. Just donât be that person.

Thank you for ranting/being passionate with me about academia @existentialsiren !!!!!! (thank you @evolution-is-just-a-theorem for introducing us!!!!)
Btw also in response to that article: one of my grandpas did die right before finals
This shit does happen. We are in college. our grandparents are getting old.
oh man i made the mistake of reading the comments
one person said that in the event of a death during finals/midterms, a studentâs parents should plan the funeral around that
holy fuck is that some ignorant bullshit. I missed two grandparents funerals because I was in school. Jewish burials are done as quickly as possible, ideally within 24 hours, but conceptually âASAPâ.Â
Itâs not going to get put off, it wont be planned around a school schedule. maybe the student would want to drop everything to attend, or if they canât, maybe a day or two off to cry and talk to people. Either are just as valid.Â
Even if a student isnât jewish, or of a religion that has specific death rituals, the comment was rude as fuck
Can we talk about how Fox has been paying a ton of popular youtubers and instagrammers to talk about The Greatest Showman and do dance and song covers of it
And how regardless of what other changes I make to my Greatest Showman video, it ONLY gets demonetized when I put the words âThe Greatest Showmanâ along with some kind of negative phrase in the title

âWhy do mermaids wear long hair?â
Camouflage.
Ensnare prey.
Stylish.
This:
Hereâs my current soft graph for mermaid types:
Triton (Rogue) are fishy mermaids. Bermudas (Mage) are squishy or shelly mermaids. Leviathans (Warrior) are dinosaur-ish mermaids.
Ocean depth and sunlight level affects their size and appearance â the deeper mermaids live, the bigger they usually get.
Mermaids who live in deep depths can still look human, but itâs their giant inhuman size that categorizes them as Aphotic Mermaids.Â
Human-sized mermaids can exist in deep depths, but theyâre rare.
time to be wholesome and check out the Bowser tag :)
âHer fantasy novel Children of Blood and Bone, the first of a trilogy about a young girlâs battle with a prince over bringing magic back to West Africa, Â is going to be released some time next year. But itâs already got a seven-figure publishing deal with Macmillan, and a massive deal with Fox Studios too, with the latter acquiring the movie rights pretty early on in the day for a book that hasnât even been published yet.â

Animated Hair Explained
What do these two ladies have in common?
Yes, they are both 18, but both of them are also daily accused of failed hair physics. I cannot even count how many times people bring these two up to me when Iâm ranting about animation errors. So Iâm now here today to make it clear why Rapunzel and Anastasia (and their character designers) do not deserve the criticism.
RAPUNZEL
Complaint:Â âWhen Rapunzel gets her hair braided it turns super short.â
Backstory: Yes, she has long ass hair. 70 feet of it to be precise. And her hair does indeed get shorter when itâs braided. But the hair itself is still 70 feet long.
The secret: Itâs just folded on-top of itself several times.
The proof:Â We donât see much of the branding process itself. The image below is actually from the only shot we get.
But take a look at normal braids from âTangledâ as well as âFrozenâ.Â
Pretty small, right? Also check out how thin Rapunzelâs hair is when you grab it all in your hand: itâs not unaturally thick in any way.
Now look at Rapunzelâs huge ass braid. The thickness of it proves that there are several layers of hair hiding in there; folded over and over and arranged in a way so that the tips of the hair will still be at the end. Another design choice would have been to give Blondie a 70 feet long thin braid, but it would still have gotten stuck everywhere due to itâs length. So making a shorter and THICC braid was the best solution.Â
Conclusion: The braiding girls in Corona really know what they are doing and have bright futures up ahead.
ANASTASIA
Complaint:Â âAnastasiaâs hair goes from short to long out of the blue.â
Backstory: When we first meet young Anastasia she has long hair, but when we meet her again as an adult she seems to have cut away her long locks.Â
But in later scenes her hair reaches her lower back??? But no worries! The animators havenât been smoking gummybears while making this decision, since her hair was just hiding right under our noses all this time.
The secret: Anastasia hair is layered and she used her own hair to tie up the longest part.
The proof: When Anastasia removes her hat we can see a high ponytail; completely plausible for someone with short hair. But look at whatâs keeping Anastasiaâs hair in itâs place; itâs her own hair, twisted tightly in a loop. We even see this same technique used by all the burlesque dancers during âParis Holds The Keyâ.Â
If this had indeed been a hairband of sorts then it wouldnât have the exact same shade as her hair, nor would it have been drawn like this. But what about the hair at the nape of her neck? Itâs just the shortest parts that did not reach the messy ponytail, a very common occurance for people with layered hair. But these short parts become practically invisible if you let down all your hair over it. Same thing if you let a professional do your hair, which happens to Anastasia  after meeting Sophie (The secret here = Bobby pins).
For further proof you can below see real life examples of twisted hair, as well as short hair that does not reach a high ponytail.Â
Conclusion: Anastasiaâs hair is misunderstood and deserves love.
I will now go eat vanilla ice-cream with hot raspberries. Ciao.
