im very grateful for the lessons in photography i was taught in stop motion class because just now they made it possible to photograph the stars with my phone in spite of the camera usually not detecting the light of stars because theyre so dim,,,, enjoy these shiny motherfuckers
ok so if everythings normal, your phone camera should have a manual mode (sometimes called pro mode). in it, change the settings of the shutter lag to 20 seconds, then put the phone down on some stable, plane surface and press the photo button (usually when using your camera, the volume buttons can be used as photo button) and let the phone still for the whole 20 seconds.Ā
(basically the problem with most cameras is that they dont have a very good light sensitivity in the dark, however that doesnt mean they cant detect it at all. the longer the shutter is open, the more light your camera takes in and the more burnt/light your pic will be, so in (literally) dark situations, make the shutter lag longer to get all that light you need! also i said 20 seconds but really you can make it shorter or longer depending on what kinda stuff you want for your stars)
Yes this!
Additionally, adjust your ISO to the highest number (mimics the film used for very low light and low speed images)
And set your shutter speed to the longest time possible (on my phone itās 10 seconds).
Leave your focus settings on Auto, and if your phone camera has a timer option, turn that on (five seconds is generally enough).
Plan your shot first, then find a place to set your phone down so you can get the image you want. The less light pollution, the better; youāll pick up FAR more stars in your picture.
Once you know what you want to shoot, tap your screen to āfocusā it, then hit the button to take the picture, set your phone down, and back away from the ātripodā. Donāt touch your phone for a good 15 seconds, just to be sure.
You will not be disappointed in the results, let me assure you.
Not even a little bit.

reblog to save a life
This is an incomplete tutorial, and it drives me crazy every time I see it come around.
We live in a pretty great digital age and we have access to a ton of amazing tools that artists in past generations couldnāt even dream of, but a lot of people look at a cool trick and only learn half of the process of using it.
Hereās the missing part of this tutorial:
How do you populate your backgrounds?
Well, hereās the answer:
If the focus is the environment, you must show a person in relation to that environment.
The examples above are great because they show how to use the software itself, but each one just kind of āplopsā the character in front of their finished product with no regard of the personās relation to their environment.
How do you fix this?
Well, hereās the simplest solution:
This is a popular trick used by professional storyboard and comic artists alike when theyāre quickly planning compositions. Itās simple and it requires you to do some planning before you sit down to crank out that polished, final version of your work, but it will be the difference between a background and an environment.
From Blacksad (artist: Juanjo Guarnido)
From Hellboy (Mike Mignola)
Even if your draftsmanship isnāt that great (like mine), people can be more immersed in the story you tell if you just make it feel like there is a world that exists completely separate from the one in which they currently reside ā not just making a backdrop the characters stand in front of.
Your creations live in a unique world, and it is as much a character as any other member of the cast. Make it as believable as they are.
Great comments and tutorials!
Iām a 3d artist and have been exploring the possibilities of using 3d as reference for 2d poses. I want to add a couple of tips and things!
Sketchup is very useful for environment references, and I assume itās reasonably easy to learn. If youāre interested in going above and beyond, I highly recommend learning a proper 3d modeling program to help with art, especially because you can very easily populate a scene or location with characters!
Using 3ds Max I can pretty quickly construct an environment for reference. But going beyond that, I can also pose a pretty simple āCATāĀ armature (known in 3d as a rig) straight into the scene, which can be totally customized, from various limbs, tails, wings, whatever, to proportions, and also can be modeled onto and expanded upon (for an example, you could 3d sculpt a head reference for your character and then attach it to the CAT rig, so you have a reference for complex face angles!)
The armature can also be posed incredibly easily. I know programs exist for stuff like this - Manga Studio, Design Doll - but posing characters in these programs is always an exercise in frustration and very fiddly imo. A simple 3d rig is impossibly easy to pose.
By creating an environment and dropping my character rig into it, I have an excellent point of reference when it comes to drawing the scene!
Not only that, but I can also view the scene from whatever angle I could ever want or need, including the character and their pose/position relative to the environment.
We can even quickly and easily expand this scene to include more characters!
Proper 3d modeling software is immensely powerful, and if you wanted to, you could model a complex environment that occurs regularly in your comic or illustration work (say, a castle interior, or an outdoor forest environment) and populate the scene with as many perspective-grounded characters as you need!

If there was a way to run SUPER MEGA AD BLOCKER on this website I fucking would
āPlease oh please open up your computer to a porn virus! If you donāt youāre evil!ā
Freeloader Cominā through!
We didnāt start this war internet users have with ads - We might have moaned about banner ads, but it was only when they started making noises when we might be listening to music or a podcast or whatever, causing two sound sorces at once, that we started trying to block ads universally rather than just a specific type of ad (pop ups).
And since then ads have gotten worse - Actual malware rather than merely breaking one of the fundamental sins of web design - though shalt not autoplay anything with sound. And the more aggressive a website is with āplease turn off adblockā the less I trust it to bother to vet ads and advertisers to make sure theyāre not installing malware.
Not to mention that the idea that avoiding ads is āfreeloadingā is hilariously backward. Advertisement is a transaction between the platform and the advertiser, the user has no obligation to provide the views/clicks the platform has promised. Using an adblocker isnāt freeloading in the same way that leaving the room to get a snack during a commercial break isnāt cheating the tv network.
Ok yāall, I work as a web developer and Iām here to tell you that you are 100% right and that itās shit. SO Iām going to tell you how to get around websites that block you from using their website if youāre using an adblocker.Ā
Every website uses a language called JavaScript; long story short itās a website language that allows developers to do the crazy shit you see on websites. Now the easiest thing to do is to disable JavaScript to stop them from knowing you have an adblocker:
Oh no! Iām blocked from viewing the website. It would be a terrible shame if I were able to right click and select theĀ āinspectā feature
Click the three dots in the top right and open theĀ āSettingsā Menu
And then scrolled down toĀ āDebuggerā and checked theĀ āDisable Javascript Optionā
And then just refreshed the page

text-to-audio reenactment posts like this are the absolute best part of this site.
How did you become a sailor?
Short story: I didnāt want to be a bank teller anymore, was always starry-eyed over tall ships, and didnāt really expect to be hired in the first place.
Slightly longer story: Iād quit everything, jumped over to Europe with a backpack and fuck-all else, worked in hostels for room and board, and panicked when my visa came close to running out. I was coming from a pretty dark time in my life, had no idea what Iād do next, and really had nothing to lose by trying for this thing that Iād have talked myself out of if Iād been feeling more sensible. I didnāt know anything about sailing, didnāt know if Iād even enjoy it, but I figured it would make a good story and feed me for the summer, and that would put me a step above where I was at the moment.
So - I emailed literally every single tall ship captain between Maine and Connecticut, and got lucky on the Mary Day, which took me on as messmate (cookās assistant/dishwasher/assistant deckhand). Didnāt need any previous sailing experience, just people skills, work ethic, and being able to live on board a schooner - something hostels had more than prepared me for.Ā
And I fell in love with it, honestly. I got moved up to deckhand halfway through the first season, have been working as a deckhand since, and down the road Iād like to look more into bosunry and a captainās license. I could honestly write pages about how much I love it and why, particularly historic wooden boats. It was such a spur of the moment thing, and there are days when I still canāt believe this is What I Do Now.
If youāre interested in tall ships yourself, I wrote something last season that you might find helpful - it has more details of what life on board is like, resources for finding positions, good things to bring on board, a few notes about the culture.
