Frank wanted to be content with the friendship they had going. Seriously, he did. He tried. He wasn’t a bat shit caveman who saw a beautiful woman for the first time.
But Mel was more than that, and she made him crave for more—her warmth, her smiles, her laughs, more of her. And maybe the ring on his finger burned every single time he did, but it didn’t stop him from gravitating towards her.

AU - Singer Mel/Soldier Frank
This is set in the 1940s.
Melissa King was an aspiring singer and performer. She dreamed of having her own recording label, but since her mom died, she became the sole caretaker of her sister. Her stepmom and dad were never supportive of her. This was why she concealed herself every night and went to Allegheny lounge to perform, and there she met Frank.
prompt: addiction
the wreckage of you
Just one.
In.
One. Two. Three. Four seconds.
Hold.
He just needed one. It wouldn’t hurt, right?
One. Two. Three. Four seconds.
Out.
His breath came out in a desperate gasp as if he were drowning.
Frank didn’t know how long he had been sitting there in the empty tub, staring at the blue pills in his hands and trying to regulate his breathing. He swallowed hard, tasting something bitter and feeling something stuck to the dry walls of his throat.
Oh no. God no. Did he take one already? Fuck.
or Frank relapsed.
these are all rushed. so all the grammar mistakes are there. i hope it's still understandable. :)
Okay so Kingdon recap of the Season 2 scripts Part 2!
Find Part 1 here, with full details of where the scripts are from
Let's finish up the highlight reel in chronological order
When Dana calls Frank over to assist with Becca he says "need something?" and in all caps Mel says "YES"
"Mel stands at the door as Langdon sits at Becca’s beside. He’s gentle and attentive" HELLO??? He's gentle and attentive???
When Frank asks Mel to dim the lights when she leaves the room she is "pleased"
The script has Frank telling Mel that Becca is "in good hands" BUT did not have the line from the episode of Mel replying "I know"
The script has Becca telling Frank "Mel says lots of nice things about you" but initally has Frank and Perlah sharing a smile versus the little smile that Frank does afterwards so they intentionally changed it to make it about him being flattered
In the episode we get this lovely moment of Mel being taken aback and confused with Frank asking about her, and while the dialogue is the same in the script, there's no direction or notes about her acting like that or stammering
When Becca tells Mel that she can "see why you like him" the script says "Mel blushes. Slightly embarrassed"
In the episode, when Mel is getting upset with Becca, Frank says "Dr. King, why don't you get some air?" but in the script the line was "Why don’t you get some air, Dr. King? And I’ll stay with Becca"
The ambulance bay scene dialogue was basically exactly what we saw in the finished episode, and there were no interesting directions or other notes
After Frank feels like he made a mistake with Grady (the kid with asthma) we have the direction notes of "unnoticed, Langdon slips out the door and Mel picks up on his funk" and "Mel moves to throw out her gloves and looks out the trauma doors, watching Langdon disappear into the North Corridor"
In the break room the script has Mel saying "We don’t always get everything right immediately" while we get "we don't always get everything right the first time" in the episode
After the Kelly Clarkson joke they are "sharing a much needed smile"
After the final scene with Grady we get this incredibly buzzy moment of Mel and Frank leaving the room together while looking at each other, which was not in the script!!
What we get is "Off Langdon, heading out to Central and not feeling on top of his game" they intentionally decided to make a change to have the two of them leaving together happily, rather than Frank leaving by himself dejected
Then we get to the finale ambulance bay scene, which is very very different in the script. We know from a still that there was a high five that ended up getting cut, but the original script didn't even have them standing and watching fireworks together
The ambulance bay scene starts with Frank walking outside and seeing that Mel is sitting in the back of an ambulance (think the Rollins s1 scene)
Frank asks if Mel is staying for fireworks, and she tells him that she was supposed to watch them with Becca, but now Becca's watching them with Adam, and then Frank sits down next to her in the ambulance
They have a slightly more condensed version of the conversation that happens in the episode, and after "I could have paralyzed that guy" "but you didn't" "no I didn't" there's the direction "She offers a high five. He offers a fist. They both adjust to the other. Well, it was the thought that counts" what do you mean "they both adjust to the other"
Then the scene ends with the note "and as they sit in silence..."

I cannot imagine the shock you must feel being handed such a burden, and so unexpectedly. I can offer you nothing but an apology, and a promise that I will do my best to return to you as soon as possible in order to relieve you of tasks I am sure you find unpleasant at best (at worst, I shudder to think). I wanted to offer you security, not responsibility, sweet Melly, and I regret that circumstances have forced you into a scantness of the former and too much of the latter. Please give the children and Becca my love and tell my mother I think of her often—and if you would pray for my dear brother's soul along with mine tonight I would be much obliged to your graceful kindness—yours affectionately, F.L.
Earl Frank Langdon hastily married his wife's cousin in an attempt to keep them all close and safe, but was forced to leave so quickly after the wedding that he hardly had a chance to even woo his new bride! Now that he's back, he has every intention of proving to Mel that theirs can be a partnership in passion, as well as in life... but will his secrets drive her away? Is his new wife hiding something of her own?
It was super fun getting to do fanart again (as if anything is stopping me) and as y'all can see i had the best time playing around making different book covers, at first inspired by those illustrated Jane austen Novels of the 1800, and a penguin classic, a worn one, because avocadomoon writes stuff that is impossible to put down and if she had written classic penguin books, they'd be worn and torn. Well read, but abused copies. Her favourite (and mine) was the worn penguin classic, but after seeing her moodboard for this fic, I hastily made a cover that looked not too dissimilar from the Mary Balogh cover there.
the concept of mel and langdon moving in together less than a month after July 4th because frank calls her one day really late at night because his back has seized up and he really needs help getting up. and that's how she finds out frank is literally living in a car. she gets him to her house and just. literally doesn't let him leave.
I love love love this! I'm a huge fan of them moving in u-haul style anyway, but if you add a bit of peril, it's just extra delicious. Ficlet under the cut!
It hadn't made sense to begin with, when he had called her and asked if she was still at work, and if not, could she please pop by on her way home. He had given her the address to a gym about five minutes from the PTMC by car, with the instruction to call him when she got there.
She didn't need to call him though, the gym was long closed and his car was the only one left in the parking lot after midnight.
"Frank?" His name still felt odd on her tongue, he had been Dr. Langdon for 11 months, the first name was a new development that hadn't quite stuck yet. Mel tried to look into the car, but couldn't see through the foil that was covering the windows from the inside.
"Mel?" The doors unlocked audibly, and she didn't hesitate to pull the passenger side door open. The front seats were empty, stale overly warm air pouring out into the now much more pleasant evening breeze. The passenger seat, and space under the glove compartment were filled with bags and boxes to the point where she couldn't really see into the back.
"Sorry. I-"
"Hold on!" She closed the front door and opened the back instead.
There, on a blow up mattress propped up over the backseat and even more bags and boxes that filled the area between the front and backseats, was Frank, his feet on her side of the car, sweatsoaked from the heat trapped in the car, but pale, face scrunched up in visible discomfort, and Mel was sure only part of it was caused by her sudden arrival.
"I can't get up." He wheezed, sounding defeated.
Mel climbed into the car, carefully placing a knee on the air mattress to get closer, feeling the pulse in his neck, too fast, and his forehead, too hot.
"What happened?"
"I just... " He looked around like he was searching for something. "After the gym, I needed a nap. My back's seized up, I can't. Fuck-" It seemed to hurt to even draw in deep breaths.
"Do you need to get up?"
"My bladder's killing me. Please...." He didn't need to spell it out, the panicked look around the car was enough. Don't let me piss myself here.
"Okay, this might hurt." Mel warned him, climbing back out of the car and grabbing a hold of him his knees to pull him out. Hoisting him upright wasn't too hard. Not letting go when he barely suppressed a yelp of pain was harder. He swayed for a moment before he got a good grip on the roof of the car to help steady himself.
"Sorry, I'm so sorry." It was like a mantra under his breath.
"It's fine, it's all fine." Mel assured him, guiding him a few stumbling steps away from the car and towards a tree that'd have to do, because there was no other destination in sight.
"You got it, are you standing?" She checked with him, earning herself a frantic nod before she even considered letting go of him. Turning away to give him some privacy and tuning out the sound of a desperate stream of urine hitting the dirt, she looked back at the car. The trunk was full too. Boxes, clothes, belongings piled high in every part of the car, to the point where he was barely compliant with visibility requirements.
"I'm so sorry. I didn't know who to call. It shouldn't have been you." He sounded pained, small.
"Are you sleeping in your car?"
"No, I just.. I have a lot of stuff I need to bring to my parents." There was a rustling of fabric and Mel turned to face Frank in the dark, illuminated only by street lamps in the distance now and the neon sign of the gym halfway across the parking lot.
In his t-shirt and shorts, he looked like someone had rung him out of bed in the middle of the night, woken up from a sweat-inducing nightmare, his hair wild, skin damp.
She didn't call his lie. He trusted her enough to call her for help, the last thing she wanted was to make him regret it.
"Let me have a look at your back?"
"It's- you don't have to, it's just the same old thing." The back injury, she knew now, the one that had driven his addiction. It made his steps stiff now, it made all of him tense and tight. She had noticed it a bit over the past few days, how he took a long moment to get up, and an even longer moment to sit down, how he couldn't stand still for a moment without bending or stretching something.
"Do you mind if I still have a look? Just for me?"
The way Frank nodded spoke volumes about just how tired he was.
"Maybe best if you lie down on your front?"
He glanced back at the car like he was weary of letting her see more of it than she already had, but he didn't protest, just slowly, slowly, walked back, damn near collapsing once he had bent down enough to climb into the car. Mel followed him, a hand on his leg so he could feel where she was as she climbed in. There was just about enough space for her to kneel on the air mattress.
"I'll just lift your shirt, okay?"
"Yeah."
The good, or possibly bad thing, depending, was that there was nothing to see. No fresh bruises, no obvious causes for pain. But when Mel moved her fingers over his hips, her hands moving up along his spine in parallel, palpitating the area, she could feel the origin of his pain. His whole back was impossibly tight, muscles corded thick and hard, knots so dense she couldn't imagine what they must be doing to him, though she could see the effect. He only let out small breaths as she made her examination.
Pressing her lips together, she tried to think of something to say, something, anything to suggest. The sight of his stethoscope slung over the headrest of one of the back seats made her heart ache.
"Frank... " She pulled his shirt back down to cover the bare skin on his back, resting her hand on his ribs gently and shifting so she could sit down sideways a little further into the car to look at his face where he had turned it to the side so he could breathe.
"I'm fine now," he lied, like he could already see everything she wanted to say written on her face. "Thank you for coming, I'll be fine in a few minutes, I'll drive home and it'll be fine by tomorrow, I just couldn't get up is all. Thank you, really. I feel so silly, I just... I was worried is all." There was something frantic in his voice, like he was holding back from begging her to believe him, but the reassuring smile he was trying for was sitting uneasy on his face, distorted by the pain of his condition.
She wanted to talk him into talking to her, wanted to tell him what she'd do if he was a patient, if he'd come into the ED, but every possible way to start this conversation felt flat and wrong before she even let a word of it pass her lips.
"Can you come home with me?"
"What?"
"Just... you're in pain, you can barely walk, there's no way I'm letting you try and drive like this." Not that she believed he had anywhere to go, but she could just imagine him trying to convince her that he did, getting behind the wheel and leaving this parking lot, never to return lest she come to check if he parked here again.
"I- I can't..."
"Becca's room is all empty except for the bed. It's a really good mattress. And there's air con, a shower. I was going to make pasta for dinner."
There was an awful play of emotions running across his face, shame, dread, discomfort, hope and more shame. She let her hand drift over his middle back in very small motions. "I learned how to do a really mean deep tissue massage from one of the PTs at the VA." Mel added.
Frank closed his eyes for a moment, pride fighting need.
"I don't think I can get up again," he admitted, finally.
"That's okay, I can drive this car home, you just stay put."
"Mel. I can't ask this of you."
"You didn't ask for anything. Come on, give me your keys." He fumbled around the air mattress for a moment before finding them under his pillow, handing them over.
"Thank you." She climbed out of the car, making sure his legs were stowed safely inside before closing the door. Making sure her own care was locked and grabbing her bag didn't take more than a minute.
It was strange, driving another car, she hadn't been in the driver's seat of another vehicle since she got her licence, but it was easy enough to find her way around after a minute.
The drive wasn't long, but it felt heavy, neither of them really sure what to say.
"Here we are." Mel parked in her usual spot, coming around to help him out again. She had never been happier that her building had an elevator than she was when she was clutching Frank's waist.
He looked so pale by the time they made it into her apartment.

I hope Mel's debilitating stress is the six month affair she's been having with a certain fellow resident and I hope that frank is helping her with that debilitating stress by eating her out every night before going home to his wife
An AU where a disgraced succubus Mel visits an occult cynical doctor Frank in his sleep, not for sex but for solace.
i couldn't sleep last night and wrote this in my notes. it's just an idea. :)) i love hellblazer. and maybe i'll write this, maybe i won't. i don't know if i could, so i'm just gonna throw it here.
@kingdonmicrofic july 18, alternative prompt: bang (wc: 306/347)
cw: mature, infidelity
They did this thing, sometimes. It was weird and shameful and like nothing Mel had ever heard of before, and they didn’t do it a lot, but it went like this: first, they’d share a look. This part always just kind of happened - it’s not like they ever planned it. Frank’s face would go all intense and serious, and he’d look down at her lips, and that’s how she would know.
They would slip away then, if they could, into a closet or an empty room on a different floor. He would pull her close, an arm around her stomach, and ease his weight against her back. Then he’d rock his hips into hers like they were having sex. She’d press back and try not to make any noise, even though she was pretty sure he liked it when she did.
They never took their clothes off or anything. They never even kissed, but she still felt guilty about the way he’d groan and his hips would stutter and he’d drop his forehead to her shoulder and just breathe there for a while after. Not guilty enough to not let him do it, though.
It always felt good. One time he had lifted her up and pressed her against the door so that the handle pushed against her just right, and she’d come hard even though she was terrified the entire time that the door was going to swing open and they’d drop to the floor with a bang.
It was risky and she didn’t know what made it worth it for him because they never talked about it. There was only one time, when she was fixing her braid, that he said anything at all. This is going to be different, someday, I promise. She was still waiting to find out what that meant.

@kingdonmicrofic Day 16: Glitter (429) WARNINGS: stripper au, smut
This is a stereotype. Well, okay, maybe it’s the subversion of a stereotype? Mel isn’t sure that makes it any better.
She’s still falling in love with a stripper at a Bach party. It’s just that the stripper is male and she’s female.
Yeah, she doesn’t feel any better about this.
“You’re drooling,” Becca points out, unhelpfully. She has on massive noise cancelling headphones so that the music doesn’t bug her too much, but Mel still isn’t sure how this is the thing she chose for her bachelorette party. A strip club! Mel needs another drink. “I don’t get the hair thing.”
Miserably, Mel shrugs. “I think it’s evolutionary. Like part of my brain knows that he would survive a cold winter. Shoot, okay, I’m going to go get a drink, do you want another?”
Becca nods, already distracted by another one of the strippers. A few minutes of mildly frustrating attempts to order at the crowded bar later, Mel returns with two cosmos. Only, Becca isn’t alone at their table. “Hi, Mel! This is Ken!”
The stripper is tall. Probably six feet, with floppy boyband hair and piercing blue eyes. When Mel fails to say anything in English (she makes a noise that gets mostly drowned out by the music) Ken takes the drinks from her hand, places them on the table, then leads her to her chair. “Cat got your tongue? Don’t worry, we don’t have to talk about anything.”
It’s the first time Mel has ever received a lap dance in her life, and she can’t say she expected to enjoy something like that. Yet, she’s left panting and clenching her thighs when Ken is done. He grins at her, his hand running over her braid before he backs away. “Nice to meet you ladies. Feel free to ask for me any time.”
~*~
Mel, her sister had called her. She’d been too shy to say anything when he was dancing on her, but she sure seems to have found her words now. “You—fuck— you don’t use your real name, do you? You aren’t actually Ken?”
He groans, squeezing her tits as she bounces up and down on his cock. Some of his body glitter has transferred over to her, making her shine under the dim lamplight of his bedroom. “No—goddamn, sweetheart— no, my name’s Frank. Not sexy.”
She proves him wrong immediately, moaning his name as she picks up the pace, looking down at him with her jaw dropped open.
God, he’s glad he broke his rule about not going home with customers.
i've done it, i've updated my cheating fic. good night to me and good morning to you, i guess.
Read on ao3
Chapter 3 It's Mel's POV of the affair :)
it's a torture writing this chapter, ngl.
Frank had included her in everything – as if she could exist there, in a future he vividly pictured. She sometimes allowed herself to indulge in that thought, but it’d shatter whenever it was time to leave her side and be with his wife and kids.
She’d be left there, lying on her bed with her knees tucked tightly to her chest, staring at the space beside her where the sheets still smelled like him.
Why couldn’t she have it? This one thing she had let herself be selfish for. Hadn’t she given enough? Hadn’t she been lonely long enough? Couldn’t she be happy with the only person who made her feel seen and wanted? She despised herself the most for even having that seed of hope in her heart.
