really love how American meritocracy work culture means that being good at your job means getting punished with more job
great system we got here
I miss my leeches for all the normal pet reasons but I also miss being able to use them as a one-hit death blow to end stupid conversations. Whenever I defend the ecological importance of parasites someone will inevitably crawl up and go βwell I bet you wouldnβt feel that way if you had themβ and oooooo boy let me tell you. It was so fun to hit back with βI DOβ and then whip out my phone and show them 30 pictures of my fucking Worms
What were your leeches named?? Please i need to know please please tell me about your leeches oh my god
Wormitha, Burrito, Chungus, Chocolate Chip and Squish Baby. I collectively called them The Squish Squad
'Borrowing the Tiger's Majesty' by Yuzu Kato
In Japan (and less commonly in China), thereβs a concept of a 30-hour day.
Not in the sense that two days would be 60 hours, but more that the days overlap between midnight and 6 AM. So, for instance, it something happened 2 AM on Sunday, you could sayΒ β2 oβclock on Sundayβ, but you could also sayΒ β26 oβclock on Saturdayβ.
Which MAKES SO MUCH SENSE. When you talk about things happeningΒ βlast nightβ, it doesnβt suddenly stop beingΒ βlast nightβ the instant the clock strikes midnight because Iβm not Cinderella.
In conclusion, I wish America had this so I could throw it in the face of every smug friend who saysΒ βDONβT YOU MEAN LATER TODAY????β when I tell themΒ βsee you tomorrowβ at two minutes past midnight.
Some more sources:
This is most common in TV schedules:
http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/OtakuOClock
Anime aired from around 11 p.m. until the wee hours of the morning, occasionally indicated by the odd-looking β22:00-27:00β notation. [β¦]
The trope name refers to the odd way of noting when the shows start airing; itβs common to see a show aired at 1:00 am listed at β25:00β. This is largely done to align the schedule with that of the previous day; many Japanese TV networks still sign off in the middle of the night, and those who donβt will only switch to βthe next dayββs programming at 4 am or so.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Date_and_time_notation_in_Japan
Times past midnight can also be counted past the 24 hour mark, usually when the associated activity spans across midnight. For example, bars or clubs may advertise as being open until β26ζβ (i.e. 2 am). This is partly to avoid any ambiguity (2 am versus 2 pm), partly because the closing time is considered part of the previous business day, and perhaps also due to cultural perceptions that the hours of darkness are counted as part of the previous day, rather than dividing the night between one day and the next. Television stations will also frequently use this notation in their late-night scheduling. This form is rarely used in conversation.
cultural perceptions that the hours of darkness are counted as part of the previous day
idk about you, but I have the same cultural perceptions. Letβs get this popularized in the US!
In some cultures the day changes over when the Sun sets, in others when the Sun rises. Midnight is a pretty unintuitive convention, but I can see its value for some purposes.
But relaxing the requirement that βevery moment can only be referred to by a single timeβ is a very elegant solution, and very obvious in retrospect.
In undergrad, when so many all-nighters were being pulled, and people waking up at like 8 PM to start homework, βgood morningβ was a tricky concept. So one set of criteria was 2-of-3 of {you woke up | you ate a meal | the sun has risen}.

One year ago today I posted this miniature Star Wars Andor inspired photo I created. Shot practically using real figures, lighting & a couple of broom heads to create a crop field and a few perspective cheats.

Ozempic scares the shit out of me. You're telling me there's a drug that takes away both the craving side of hunger and targets the brain's rewards center for eating. You're telling me it takes the joy out of eating and it turns you into a skeleton. Why did we turn The Curse of the Black Pearl into a drug. What the fuck.
I actually want to thank the diabetics coming on this post like "actually it genuinely is a great treatment for diabetes and it hasn't affected my mood or my enjoyment of food. The real issue is it's getting abused as a weight loss drug which also makes it scarce and more expensive for those who can genuinely benefit from it." Kind of reminds me of the time my brother got permission from our family psychiatrist to try my ADHD medication and his reaction to it was "what the fuck are you on. WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU ON. WHY DO I FEEL LIKE CRYING. YOU'RE ON THIS EVERY DAY!?!"
Body chemistry! It makes a big difference in how your body processes a drug! What can be genuinely helpful for some folks is The Curse of the Black Pearl for others!

we are NOT bringing 4chan incel terminology to this site, take that "foid" out of your post and go wash your blog out with soap
the memeification of fascism is a proven method of perpetuating and instilling it in other people. Layers of irony will not protect you once you adopt racist, sexist, ableist, transphobic terminology into your lexicon. you'll be acknowledging and nursing the mindsets and connotations borne of those words.
A very astute observation by prev which should not be relegated to the tags
I am super against light pollution, and have been for decades
but I am also super annoyed by the way it's framed as "without light pollution you can see how beautiful the night sky is" way more prominently than it's framed as "hey, did you ever stop to think of how much energy/resources/money are literally wasted by having so much light shine up into the sky?"
so people get the idea that light pollution can only be remedied by eliminating all night-time light, which would make being outside at night very inconvenient, instead of by making night-time light shine only on the ground where, y'know, the people who need it are
The mildest example of what OP's talking about in Dunedin, Aotearoa:
This is just with the streetlamp equivalent of using lampshades. Imagine what truly directional city lights could achieve?
Reblogging this again cause light pollution actually have negative health affects on humans and wildlife. We weren't meant to live in a world constantly bathed in light.
