I just learned about this recently from a Viking reenactor! Indigo dye isn't blue until it oxidizes, so when you dye with indigo your cloth or thread doesn't come out of the water blue, it comes out and then reacts with the oxygen in the air and seems to spontaneously turn blue in front of your eyes. It's a really cool process to witness.

I'm just gonna slide this on in here for anyone that is interested in preserving old games. They take it very seriously too, they want an archive of every single game. Like, they have lists of every game ever released for a system, and once that system gets old enough, they add it to their archive and start collecting. Their latest addition was the Xbox 360, they opened that vault up in September 2022, and proudly announced they'd finished their collection of games for it back in April.
Also, while their game archives are almost entirely complete, they've got another project of archiving the manuals that came with those games, and that is... considerably less well filled out. Their collection of Xbox 360 manuals is especially rough, they've only gotten manuals for three games. So if you've got some Xbox 360 games kicking around, and the manual's still with them, please consider scanning them and submitting them to the site!
Game preservation is important, but people rarely consider preserving the manuals as well; I really respect Vimm's Lair for being so thorough in their archival work.
I've been using Vimm's Lair for years, I have yet to see a single bad link or virus on the entire site. It's arguably the safest and most comprehensive archive of video games in existence. Preserved history

In Japan (and less commonly in China), thereâs a concept of a 30-hour day.
Not in the sense that two days would be 60 hours, but more that the days overlap between midnight and 6 AM. So, for instance, it something happened 2 AM on Sunday, you could say â2 oâclock on Sundayâ, but you could also say â26 oâclock on Saturdayâ.
Which MAKES SO MUCH SENSE. When you talk about things happening âlast nightâ, it doesnât suddenly stop being âlast nightâ the instant the clock strikes midnight because Iâm not Cinderella.
In conclusion, I wish America had this so I could throw it in the face of every smug friend who says âDONâT YOU MEAN LATER TODAY????â when I tell them âsee you tomorrowâ at two minutes past midnight.

In some cultures the day changes over when the Sun sets, in others when the Sun rises. Midnight is a pretty unintuitive convention, but I can see its value for some purposes.
But relaxing the requirement that âevery moment can only be referred to by a single timeâ is a very elegant solution, and very obvious in retrospect.
In undergrad, when so many all-nighters were being pulled, and people waking up at like 8 PM to start homework, âgood morningâ was a tricky concept. So one set of criteria was 2-of-3 of {you woke up | you ate a meal | the sun has risen}.
