Arctic Night
There's a gentle snow in the Arctic tonight
Settling softly on the wooden deck
And it doesn't impede the bird in flight
Nor the son, head bent, melting snow on his neck
He writes by the candlelight flickering fast
Tended by the man with a legend for a name
And he'll say on completion, finished at last
'Rest, rest now, I'll keep the flame'
When the angel lands, he'll find the imprint
Of little feet laying claim to their land
A two-man trail of large footprints
A baby with his father and protector to hand
The protector stands guard at the candelit 'sill
Weapons leaning against the window frame
'They'll be there in the morning still,
Rest, rest now, I'll keep the flame'
The ghost bids them goodnight, the son turns in
Leaving them to their thoughts in the peaceful air
And there are no more battles to win
And many more peaceful nights to share
They're tantalisingly close to the very end
On another day, he'll win the game
But 'till then, a chorus sounded by friends
