Saw an interesting post about translation that was fascinating from the opposite side because like.

As someone who grew up trilingual (sadly I am no longer trilingual, and not because I started trying to learn French), my original take on translation was not "we should perfectly translate everything accurately because that's possible".

It was "we should never try to translate anything between Mandarin and English because it is impossible and it always sounds stupid no matter which direction you go in."

So I'm coming at the compromise from the opposite direction as most (unilingual ig, or maybe romance-language-only) people, and I did already go through the whole rigamarole in college when talking to translators, and after, while complaining about subtitles for The Untamed and Yanxi Palace (they're BAD!!!). It's always fun to see how different people approach it, though, and it was an enlightening post (I didn't know about the specific Japanese translations but they're neat workarounds).

I think I'd primarily disagree on "foreignization doesn't work" -- nothing's a perfect solution, but foreignization is a very good technique and I wish more translators used it. Ken Liu (translator for The Three-Body Problem, among other things) touts it and uses it for good effect in his own original Dandelion Dynasty series. It seems that in media that actually gets spread out in the U.S., the mainstream organizations doing official translations lean toward localization, which is a loss. (Chinese light novels and webnovels are sort of an exception, but overall with East Asian media for the last 30 years...)

Then again, I do like when my nineteenth century French novels get trimmed into more typically English sentences - it's less cultural and more linguistic quirks, but the effect can be stronger. It depends on the scene, though -- I like for the descriptions and exposition to seem old-timey and foreign, with a bit more awkward construction than English usually has, even from 150 years ago. But a climactic scene needs to strike home.

But this is mostly armchair coaching. I've never actually posted any of my translations anywhere, except in groupchats. Caveat lector.

I know it’s very good that Rebecca stopped as soon as they saw Manderley burning, but perversely I REALLY want to see Maxim suffer more. Need the fic that picks up as soon as the book ends and makes him have to fend off a bajillion journalists without even a house to protect him from them. All the servants swarming around in confusion asking him what do. Deciding whether to accuse Mrs. Danvers or set the police after her. The constant scrutiny and attention and “Is this connected to the discovery of your wife’s body??” Beatrice’s bluff concern and worry. The whole sequence of events that leads to them finally fleeing the country — because they *could* buy a new house, but the speculation and scandal would keep following them. Realizing that even in France people recognize them, especially in the English-speaking circles they’d move in. Finally making their way further and further away, living in hotels as homeless exiles, hoping to flee Rebecca’s massive sphere of influence. Even decades later, she still haunts her dreams and his waking hours.
