I was thinking about my post about how Dean is attracted to overly independent people and had a lightbulb moment about it being another reason I don't believe anything romantic/sexual happens between Dean and Benny. Benny isn't overly independent. He does rely on Dean, calling him for help and expecting him to carry him forwards.
And the more I thought about it, the more I realized how alike to Sam and John Benny is, on some points.
You can always find common points between two people/characters but it's quite glaring here and I haven't seen it anywhere so I'm going to list what I noticed:
ā John, Sam and Benny go on revenge quests (Dean hates those btw) and drag Dean in it (Dean helps anyway because he cares). Dean nearly gets killed because of it.
ā actually, Dean gets assaulted and nearly killed by a vampire because of each of them: John in 1x20, Sam (soulless, but still) in 6x05 and Benny in 8x05. They aren't sorry about it.
ā John and Benny rely emotionally on Dean (I can totally picture John talking about Mary like Benny talks about Andrea in 8x05⦠how else Dean would have known in every little details how his parents met?)
ā Sam and Benny are addicts and Dean is expected to help them through it (besides, both of them are addicted to blood)
ā John tells Dean he'd have to kill Sam because he's a monster ; Sam tells Dean he'd have to kill Benny because he's a monster (putting himself in John's role and Benny in his)
ā John, Sam and Benny expect Dean to answer and go to their help as soon as they call
ā John and Benny use helping Dean as an excuse to die (John selling his soul in 2x01, Benny going back to Purgatory in 8x19) and putting the responsibility of their death on Dean when they actually wanted to escape something (John didn't want to have to kill Sam, Benny was tired of being on Earth)
In conclusion: any speck of chance there was that I'd believe and/or care for Dean and Benny as a ship are definitively dead now š
Sometimes Dean saying Purgatory felt "pure" is used to invalidate that experience as traumatic, which clearly isn't supposed to be the message here. We see Dean's hypervigilence after he returns and how Sam notices it while not wanting to. We see Dean say Purgatory changed him (implying not for the better to Sam and to Benny). We can see that he's rough around the edgesāhaving trouble comforting Kevin despite being the only person who cared enough to find and check up on him because he's spent the last year fighting for his life and having to let everything happen to him wash over him and just survive. Dean thinks Cas died in Purgatory. He reports he was perpetually trapped in 360 degree combat and we see that he can't relax. When he shows back up topside, he can't sleep or eat at first. He zones out. He and Benny both celebrate that they made it out.
Dean saying Purgatory felt "pure" isn't to say it wasn't traumatic or that he isn't overtly experiencing PTSD. It's that the weight of the world wasn't on his shoulders anymore. Dean spent all of season 7 suicidally depressed, drinking to the point Sam "joked" that alcohol was basically a vitamin to Dean at this point. The season started with Death blaming Dean for what Cas didātelling Dean it was his fault because he failed to figure out Death's incredibly unhelpful hints and stop his best friend from going nuclear. That one conversation (and then everything that piled on top) cut Dean so badly that he never fully recovered. Dean spent the season losing faith and trust, feeling hopeless and helpless, but like the whole world was his responsibility anyway... and there was nothing he could do to save it. He couldn't even save his own best friend. His brother was dying because of what his best friend did. His adoptive dad was killed. Every single time Dean indicated that he needed help he was brushed off or told to suck it up and he wanted to die. So yeahāwhen Dick was dead and Dean landed in Purgatory, despite the fact that Dean was actively living more trauma, he appreciated the simplicity. All he had to worry about was himself, Benny, and Cas. He didn't have to worry about cosmic beings blaming him for the state of the world. He didn't have to worry about Sam or some apocalypse looking on the horizon. All he had to worry about was livingāand what a rush it must have been to realize that despite everythingāhe wanted to liveāthat he would fight and kill to surviveāto keep being alive. So yeahāPurgatory felt pure. And that is SO sad when you think about it.
Also I wish there'd have been some kind of cool consequences for Dean being 'The Michael Sword'
Maybe something like Angels they meet exclusively refer to him as The Sword and he haaaates that
Or it explains why he's so good with handling an Angel Blade
Or why he's so resilient for Just A Dude, because he was literally built to contain an archangel. Maybe he heals a bit faster than a regular guy, but he's never noticed before because Sam heals at a similar rate.
Maybe it would explain why he gets so twitchy about religion and churches, because it's baked into the loaf that he should end up as the vessel for Michael but Dean being Dean subconsciously rebels.
Or there's a conversation where Cas reveals that whenever he heals him he has to physically put the breaks on his own Grace because Dean's body pulls it in like a magnet. It's why he's so susceptible and sensitive to Angel magic, like time travel and alternate reality stuff.
Or sometimes Dean can read tiny bits of Enochian or understand a tiny bit of Latin but then when he realises it's happening and he's aware of it the ability immediately goes......
Maybe a hot one but I donāt think purgatory was ever Deanās āhappy place.ā Thatās at odds with how he behaved in purgatory and nearly all of his arcs before that. That vision manifested out of desperation. He had an ancient kill-everyone curse, and his brain solved that with, āif only there was a place where killing didnāt really matter.ā Followed by the subconscious, āmaybe I should kill myself (like Benny did), so Sam and Cas donāt have to.ā This misunderstanding of how Dean relates to Purgatory is a big part of season 10 and post-10 Dean misunderstandings.
I forgot about that wording, lol. Saying with you
Purgatory isn't Dean's happy place and has never been
Being in Purgatory was traumatic. Dean spent more than one year in a 360° battle scenes, with monsters trying to kill him H24, with nowhere to hide or to rest. It's sad to see fanon shrugging it off as a trauma, but it's even worse when the show does it.
I checked the writer of 10x19 and oh! surprise! it's Berens! š Which means the 'happy place' thing was meant literally. We should add 'belittling Dean's traumas' to his fav themes, along with 'Dean has anger issues' and all his beloved mischaracterizations. I can't stand his writing (if one can call that writing)

What if angel blades carried a certain amount of combative grace and burned the hands of humans who try to wield them but Sam and Dean never notice because they're the vessels of Michael and Lucifer and have a natural immunity to angel grace
dean isn't actually empty inside, is the thing. that's just classic spn villains and cosmic beings unable to truly SEE dean (like cas says in the confession scene) and instead projecting what they think dean is or saying things they know will purposely feed into dean's own negative self-talk. and being unable to understand that what dean really craves and hungers for and desires is LOVE. unconditional love. which is something he thinks he can't have.
Picture this:
It has been a long day traveling in the impala. Sam is tired and cranky, starting to fuss a lot (he is very young, just a baby). John pulls up in a motel and bustles the boys into a room. Sam is at the verge of crying (he probably needs to be changed). John gives Dean quick instructions then leaves because he cannot stand a crying baby, besides, there is a vampire nest in the area.
Sam wonāt stop fussing, and Dean is stressed, so he just holds Sam while sitting on the bed, rocking him and singing quietly.
This is when he learns how to soothe babies, it doesnāt work every time, but it is always worth a try.
The amulet is a symbol of Dean's parentification btw.
It was meant to be a gift for John, but Sam gives it to Dean because John isn't with them for Christmas, right after learning that John has lied to him his whole life and confronted Dean into telling the truth.
Adding that, in 10x05, the girl giving a copy of the amulet to Dean symbolizes the fandom's obsession of pretending Dean is Sam's parent (instead of acknowledging Dean is his parentified brother) and its dislike of Dean having boundaries.
what if dean was actually a superhero?
I think fundamentally in a story where some people have power and other people are ordinary, Dean will always be ordinary, that's kind of the point of who he is? He's not inherently special. All the things that make him narratively special (Righteous man, Michael sword etc) aren't actually about him, they're notions/labels/machinations of more powerful players placed on him because of circumstance, it could literally be anyone who meets the requirements it just happens to be him, he doesn't gain any actual power from it. But that's essential to his characterisation, Dean doesn't do the things he does because of any grand destiny or power he might have, he does it because it's right, he chooses to save people even when he's always weaker than the threat he's up against because that's who he is. The only thing that sets him apart is that he knows about the supernatural and normal people don't, but in his mind that then makes it his responsibility to deal with it. Idk I just don't think Dean could be a superhero, it doesn't fit with who his character is supposed to be? I guess the closest you could come would be to argue that he could be some kind of Batman type character, someone who isn't actually superpowered but steps into that realm anyway?

Dean actually is a hugger, he just never learned how to express that because who would hug him in his childhood? John??
the reason i love dean is because he is literally just a bug in a glass jar and he is suffocating and he is going to die and he knows it he is literally just always beating at the walls of his glass jar but they will not let him out and everyone he loves is dying and everything he knows is dying and he's going to do die too but he has to watch them go first and despite it all when faced with like the choice between saving hismelf and saving someone else he always chooses someone else and you're like but don't you want this for you? don't you want to feel the air on your skin? and he's like yes yes. that's why. and it's fucked up. it's fucked up!!!
wait PAUSE !!
@notevenalittle just added these amazing tags to my 2.01 rewatch post.
#john DOESN'T ask anyone for help! #and i don't think his deal absolves him of that #if anything it further cements why he should have #like - what if there was another way? like in faith? #and it's so awful how john āāāāapologizesāāāā to dean before his death #like!!! he may very well feel some regret abt how he raised dean and how he used him for support #but he wouldn't be saying it unless he needed that as leverage #which - he knows he does! #he is manipulating dean #as his FINAL act #so so true OP - he is BUTTERING HIM UP and it's disgusting to watch #like even as he apologizes for doing these things he is also reminiscing fondly on them #because he isn't sorry Enough about parentifying and in some ways plain adultifying dean #for those memories to bring feelings of shame or painful regret #just wistful vague remorse mingled with nostalgia #he misses when little child dean would hug and reassure him! #he doesn't seem to feel very bad about putting dean in that situation#only that he had taken that āmaturityā (traumatic response to parental distress) to mean dean was ready to learn hunting #i am getting in the weeds here #john isn't sorry for what he did and if he was he'd deliver it differently and not on his deathbed in advance of demanding an awful favor
and it really got me thinking. like especially the part about john's "reminiscing fondly" and the "wistful vague remorse mingled with nostalgia" fucking HIT ME. because that is such a good articulation of the tone of that scene.
AND it got me wondering if part of that wistful, nostalgic, fondness was john picturing how it would feel for dean to be caring for him like that... even now. how comforting it might feel to return to that familiar pattern, receive that familiar care.
dean spent much of his childhood caring for his dad - his emotions, his injuries after hunts, etc. john is essentially on his deathbed here. maybe a part of him wish it could be easy like it used to feel, for dean to "put [his] hand on [john's] shoulder and... look [john] in the eye and say 'It's okay, Dad.'"
.....
#but now i have EVEN MORE THOUGHTS #because yesssss exactly #john believes that āputting all that on deanā was wrong not because making dean into a hunter as a literal child was wrong #but because putting the actual work of hunting on dean's shoulders meant he couldn't as easily access dean's reassurance and affection #he's realizing he couldn't have his cake and eat it too #like dean could be his emotional caretaker (and sam's) or he could be john's weapon #but not both #and he forfeit dean's tenderness when in retrospect that's what he misses #or at least what heās nostalgic for in this moment #like obviously john isn't going to say like 'i focused too hard on making you a mini-me when what i really wanted was a mini-maryā #but that's exactly what he means #he wanted the emotional support of an equal and dean was willing to pick up that slack sooo early #but john feels foolish for having redirected dean's domestic support into field support#he didn't want an obedient soldier (or at least he thinks in these final moments that he didn't) he wanted an obedient coparent #he wanted a source of affection and reassurance that he himself was not required to reciprocate #a well that would not dry #and here he is staring at this dry well wishing he hadnāt drained it #he's about to die and trying to eke out a few more drops #and dean is so confused by this that he literally questions whether this is even actually john #that's what gets john about all this i think #like realizing he has gone so far in the other direction that dean cannot even fathom being asked to provide further emotional support - @notevenalittle
no because literally. john being constantly torn between wanting dean as a weapon or a ~wife~. pressuring dean to shove down the tender parts of himself so he could be reliably ruthless but then john would "come home from a hunt, and after what [he'd] seen... [he'd] be wrecked" and he'd want that care so badly.
and exactly like you said. dean in this scene is so on edge and primed for it to be possession or something else hunt related and all john wants is maybe some kind of absolution as he combines this cruel medley for the last time; for dean not to be afraid, for dean to listen with care, for dean to be ready to kill his brother.....
THIS stuff is why i loose my shit for anything about john's unspoken expectations of dean to fulfill the more feminized caretaker roles in the household while simultaneously outwardly, if not disdaining, at least dismissing it.....
Sam and Dean probably had expired food so often as kids they donāt really know how certain foods are supposed to taste or rather not taste like. Dean going āI kinda miss the old milk formula that made it taste a bit sour ā¤ļøāš©¹ā and Lisa just stares at him
Dean trying so hard to get through to Jo, to make her see that she's got options, that it isn't too late for her to have something other than hunting and Jo looking at him and saying "but you love hunting?", because the options were learn to the love the cage or kill yourself trying to get out and really there were never any options because someone had to look out for Sammy

If Dean had apologized to Cas only for being angry and cold, I wouldāve been able to stomach it. Iād have hated it, but I know Dean always ends up apologizing even when he has nothing to apologize for, and nobody else apologizes to him or shows any understanding or validation for his perspective. This time, thanks to Jensen, we even had a warning about the prayer, so we knew to brace ourselves for it. I was ready to just bite the bullet and let it be.
But they went and outright made Dean say he was wrong. They had Cas show absolutely no remorse (the āI know youāre sorry about momā / āI was talking about Jackā exchange was a slap to Deanās face), no understanding for Deanās side of things, no acknowledgment of Deanās pain and loss. And of course, no apology, because Cas is only ever the victim, completely blameless. (Bringing up the mess he made as Godstiel is just a cover-up of the whitewashing of his far more recent screw-ups.)
I sort of hate that Jensen acted his heart out during that scene, because such awful writing doesnāt deserve his talent. I almost wish heād phoned it in.
There were several things I disliked about this conflict and this hits on many of them. I will note that Castiel did apologize for Mary (or tried).
14.18:Ā āI was scared. I believed in Jack for so long, I⦠I believed that he was ā he was good. I ā I knew that he would be good for the world. And he was good for us. My faith in him, it ā it never wavered, and then I-I saw what he did. It wasnāt malice. It wasnāt evil. It was like Jack saw a problem, and in his mind, he just solved it with that snake⦠What he did wasnāt bad. It was the absence of good. And I saw that in him. But we were a family, and I didnāt want to lose that, so I thought I could⦠fix it on my own. Felt like it was my responsibility. So I left. And I didnāt tell you. If I could go back and just ā just talk to him right then and there, I would. But I canāt, Dean. I failed you. And I failed Jack. And I failed āā Dean cuts him off.
15.02:Ā āDean, I recognize that I dropped the [ball]. I didnāt tell you about Jack, and then after what happened with your motherā¦ā Dean cuts him off.
In 15.09, right after sayingĀ āI was talking about Jackā, Castiel says,Ā āI already apologized to you. You just refused to hear it.ā
Iād like to think what they were trying to get across was that Castiel resented Dean taking his anger out at him after he already apologized. Cas did refer to his earlier apologies being cut off with seeming frustration. Then he said that he left because Dean couldnāt forgive him, not because āI didnāt do anything wrong.ā
In Deanās prayer, he apologizes, but I donāt think heās apologizing for blaming Castiel. I think heās apologizing for refusing to hear his apologies and ālettingā Cas leave (though that is another āblame gameā Iām not super happy with). After all, Dean also saysĀ āOf course I forgive youā, which suggests there was something Cas needed to be forgiven for. He isnāt saying Cas never did anything wrong, but he is forgiving him.Ā
The whole making up thing didnāt come off super great though. During the scene while following the Leviathan, Casās, āI was talking about Jackā line comes off as if, after apologizing to Dean about Mary, Castiel considered the matter closed and lost all sense of personal regret over what happened to her. Given his continued guilt over Jack himself while his guilt over Mary has seemingly been dropped, thisĀ would suggest that Mary herself didnāt really matter to Castiel, only how her death affected his relationship with Dean. Jack on the other hand, still matters. I donāt think that was the intended message (I donāt think the writers intentionally want to make it seem as if Mary meant nothing to Cas), but it was an unfortunate result of how the conversation was written.Ā In other words, a mess writing-wise.
What mainly makes it all so disappointing for me, is that this whole conflict as presented in 15.09 misses a very obvious character flaw that I have been hoping would be resolved in Castiel for a long time. Namely, keeping things away from Sam and Dean so he can handle things on his own, then having those things blow up in his face. Itās Castielās signature move. He always apologizes after. Heās always sorry. But his behavior doesnāt change, which is a colossal problem that I really canāt deal with anymore. The episode making mention of the Leviathan glosses over several far more recent examples of Castielās incredibly broken āI have to do it all on my ownā mentality, and that mentality itself, which seems to be a defining component of Casā storyline almost ever season, needs to be dealt with. It should have been dealt with a long time ago. Recent examples:
Season 10: Cas (along with Sam) lied about the Book of the Damned.Ā
Season 11: He let Lucifer out of The Cage without giving Sam and Dean any say so.Ā
Season 12:Ā He refused to answer the phone for weeks, came to Deanās room to apologize, but it was all a lie. He just wanted to steal The Colt so he could go and kill Kelly and Jack. If heād stuck around, he would have found out Sam and Dean had a plan to save both Kelly and Jack, but he didnāt stick around, and when they tried to call him, he again ignored their calls. After Castiel became convinced to ensure Jackās birth rather than stop it, he again refused to even try and include Sam and Dean, instead knocking them both unconscious.Ā
Season 13: Worked with Lucifer, lied to Dean about it.
Season 14: Kept his feelings that Jack shouldnāt be alone with anyone to himself, and also made a deal with The Empty for Jackās soul that heās still lying about.
Within this pattern of behavior, Dean has every right to be upset. But for some reason, this very obvious PATTERN of incredibly broken behavior is just ignored by the narrative and then perpetuated by Cas every season. It makes Cas look incredibly careless and not truly sorry. It also makes him hypocritical at points. For example, in 14.12 when he chastises Dean for hisĀ āsuicidalā plan to stop Michael while hiding the deal heās already made for Jackās soul. Or when he chastised Sam and Dean for going behind his back and wanting to put Jack in the malāak box, only to go by himself (behind Sam and Deanās backs) the very next episode to enquire about the possibility of putting Jack in The Cage. Just this episode, Castiel treated Dean like a moron for suggesting they split up in Purgatory. The first thing Castiel did the last time he and Dean landed in Purgatory was abandon Dean to an entire pack of gorilla wolves, because he believed they were safer seperated. But now Dean is a moron for suggesting maybe they should split up since theyāre on a time table and Sam is, you know, being tortured. Cas saying essentially, with an eye roll, āWell obviously weāll both just end up dead if weāre seperatedā shows a truly astounding lack of self-awareness over his past behavior patterns.Ā With the whole matter at the beginning of the episode, when Dean wanted to go after Sam, I canāt help but also feel that if it had been Jack at stake, Castiel wouldnāt have been so quick to label the emotional desire to mount an immediate rescue, āstupidā.Ā
Perhaps Iām off here, but I also donāt like Castiel saying that him leaving is Deanās fault because āYou should have stopped meā. It shows a potential strategy on Casā end thatās quite childish.Ā Castiel didnāt get forgiveness in the time frame that he wanted, so he tried to force Dean to forgive him by issuing an ultimatum (forgive me or Iām leaving). As framed in 15.03, that wasnāt necessarily his intention, and I wouldnāt have been against Castiel leaving for a while if he just thought that was what was best, because both parties needed to cool off. Dean was indeed angry and the relationship between the two was tense. To leave was fine. But 15.09 gives us a different insight into Cas reason for leaving, since he says Dean could have stopped him. This makes it look as if, when he left, CasĀ intended to leverage his presence or lack thereof to get forgiveness. Him choosing toĀ ignore Samās calls after leaving reinforces that this was his strategy. By punishing Sam through shunning, Cas further reinforces that leaving was about trying to hurt the brothers to force an apology/forgiveness from Dean that Dean wasnāt emotionally ready to give yet.
i think the reason why s1-5 are so sam-centric and later seasons revolve around dean is because s1-5 were the azazel/lucifer show while s6-15 were the chuck show. and they weren't obsessed with the same brother
