Finished “The Wives” by Tarryn Fisher! If you love unreliable narrators you’ll love this! If you’ve watched The Sinner, the two are very similar in the sense that no one is believing them when they are institutionalized. I was really enjoying this book, because I was dying to know if the narrator’s suspicions were correct, but the ending let me down. It’s another stereotype of an insecure woman deemed “crazy”, but I guess it was a fun enough read to put up with! Had to DNF my last read and picked The Vegetarian by Han Kang for my first #augustread instead! Im ~35 pages in and already im hooked! Caught me off guard that the author of The Flight Attendant, Chris Bohjalian, included this quote from Margaret Atwood at the beginning of their book! Makes me more excited to dive into it today

*some spoilers to follow!* Randomly saw someone on #bookstagram talking about this book, The Mother In Law, and I decided to give it a chance!! EDITED UPDATE: I just finished it and wow! This was definitely better than I expected it to be. I 100% went back and forth on whether or not I hated Diana or if I completely agreed with her logic and I think that is so fun! I love an unreliable narrator lol. However, as a happily forever child free person myself, I rolled my eyes every time a male character made a comment about a woman’s eggs drying up or not making their career everything and the necessity of having a child, and I was so disappointed to find out that Nettie was actually not the child-free hero I was hoping she’d be, and instead was dying for a child more than anything. I guess i’m just looking for a child-free character to relate to but thats okay! Still a fun read. 4/5! Also! This is my first #ebook and #Libby is so cool? I cant believe ive never heard of it! Truthfully, im only on page 74 of this book, and there’s a line in here that is not sitting right with me. The author, a white woman, writes, “our ideals for what Oak Knoll should and could be (inclusive, color-blind, progressive) were holding fast.” …the main two Black teenagers in the book also have the names “Xavier” and “Dashawn” She also writes how Xavier’s mother, a black woman, Valerie used to believe (when she was pregnant with a bi-racial son) the world was becoming post-racial. Being color-blind, should not be a goal. Being color-blind erases the hardship that people of color, Black people especially, experience on the daily. Being color-blind is not the goal of our society, learning from the hardships that poc have historically faced and still do to this day and fixing the institutions that enforce it, needs to be the goal. Also, I find it extremely unlikely that a black woman married to a white man suddenly believes she will be living in a post-racial society. It isn’t sitting right with me that a white woman is writing on experiences of Black people, fictional or not. I believe the author’s intentions were good, and wanting to write a social commentary that they believed was perceptive, but I’m not sure whether or not I will continue to read this book, as I so far do not like the way this author is making these characters out to be.
