"I was not weeping over myself, I swear. I was never so near to hating myself. I was not weeping over my death. When I was a child I often used to wake up in such tears. From what dream had I awakened now?" —The Diary of a Country Priest, by Georges Bernanos (215)

Eugène Delacroix
1826
The only son of General Henry César Auguste Schwiter, from whom he later inherited the title of Baron of the Empire, Louis-Auguste Schwiter was a law student in Paris when, in 1825, he met Eugène Delacroix, his first art professor, with whom he maintained a regular correspondence until the latter’s death.
At the age of 21, Louis-Auguste posed for Delacroix’s first full-length portrait, larger than life (2.18 x 1.43 m). Painted in 1826, the painting was rejected at the 1827 Salon; the painter reworked it and completed it in 1830.
Becoming a painter himself, Schwiter exhibited at the Salons between 1831 and 1859, showing mainly portraits and winning a gold medal in 1845.
