HE DOESN’T CHALLENGE HER STATEMENT. the somewhat smug smirk still remains on his lips despite the internal panic of her seeing his place. on one had her statement makes him want to show it all. prove his point that he was actually here now and planned to be here in her life in as permeant of a nature as he could. he knew it was a dumb idea. part of the reason why he managed to survive as long as he could is because he never stopped moving. he thrived under the radar. he had enemies everywhere but was hard enough to pin down that few wanted to put in the effort to find him. and then there was a baron. but he shakes that thought quickly from his mind. new york city was a big place. and odette wasn’t exactly going to show her off to anyone. no one but her needed to know he planned to stay around.

then there was the fact that if he were to take her to his apartment then that meant she would have to see the shit hole he currently called home. an ad off craiglist. a man who didn’t ask questions of his tenants who pay week as long as his tenants didn’t expect such feverous things like warm water or a working oven. she’s probably take one look at it and turn right around. ❝ aye aye captain. ❞

he listens to her orders. there’s no need to make a fuss. he had gotten what he’d come here for. her attention. plus there just might be a pocket full of some missing earings and rings that will make a pawn shop very happy. ❝ what? did they not feed you in there? aren’t the point of those things to eat drink and mingle? ❞

odette growls. involuntarily of course, but still."sorry for trying to be interested in your life. i should've known you don't want that anyway." her tone is brusque, complete with a knowing look. she tilts her head at him accusingly. "next thing i know, you're going to tell me your name isn't even flynn rider." odette shifts her focus and abruptly stares down at his knees. she feels a fleeting sense of satisfaction at the thought of sending him spiraling onto the sidewalk.

they are drowned out by the roar of the city. cars honk, people shout. no one pays them a glance. perhaps it's why the world suddenly feels very big, and she feels very small. her gaze flickers uncertainly at him. "you said you're here to see me," she points out. she crosses her arms over her chest and shifts her weight to her right leg. "was that just lip service to get me into your bed?" not that she didn't mind. in fact, that's the outcome she hoped for. she's had no problem sleeping with strangers, and technically, the man across from her is one. but she used to know him, and now she doesn't.

WELL THIS IS GOING TO GIVE HIM WHIPLASH. one moment she’s offering him crepes and the next it feels like she’s pulling away from him at neck breaking speed. flynn is unsure if he manages to hide the hurt that crosses his features. this is why he preferred her sneaking away during the night. a sleeping man couldn’t betray his feelings by broadcasting it on his face. better to keep his eyes closed. he swears she possesses ungodly powers to read his emotions through his eyes. for years flynn had perfected the art of the lie. and with every encounter he finds it harder and harder to continue his art.

he diverts his eyes and reaches for the mess on the table. he’d always been a tactile person. teased endlessly about the way he talks with his hands or needs something to fiddle with when anxious. he’d spent years trying to hide it. but he’d tired and agitated. it’s too difficult to slip on the mask of flynn that should be like a second skin to him now. he rolls back his shoulders as he moves to throw out the used swabs and packaging. ❝ what? realized that you don’t actually gave eggs for those crepes? ❞ or rather she realized she didn’t want to let him into her home. probably didn’t trust him. why would she? he was a thief after all. he forces a smirk like smile on his lips and a twinkle in his eyes as he allows himself to face her again. ❝ get home safe, odette. ❞

it's been three weeks. odette is acutely aware that this is the longest they've gone without seeing each other. for the past three weeks, all she's been able to do is replay their last encounter. the fall, crossed lines, his rejection... and worse, the hurt on his face he hadn't been able to hide on time. odette sees it when she's awake and when she closes her eyes at night to sleep. she did that. flynn isn't even here, and he's haunting her. she wonders how long they'll keep avoiding each other for. she has lingered on his contact information so many times, close to caving and calling him or texting him. but what would she say? i'm sorry felt too small. come over felt desperate. i miss you felt too vulnerable, even if all of them were true.

she's been so busy thinking of him that she's been distracted and scatter-brained everywhere else. maybe it's why she didn't see him walking straight towards her until it was too late. they collided with an 'oof' sending flynn tumbling to the sidewalk along with odette's hot tea. instinct drives her to her knees as she asks if he's okay. then he opens his mouth.

to think she was going to apologize to this man. her face twists into a scowl, and she stands with an irritated huff. "i just asked if you were ok," odette says hotly. "next time i'll just walk over you and mind my business."

he lets out a soft noise at the nip. his hand at the back of her neck now threading through her dark locks. ❝ as lovely as that sounds I’m starting to question if you have ever actually used that bathroom and looked at the shower. I barely fit in it with just me. I think trying to fuck in there will just add another causality to the morning. and the sun isn’t even up yet. ❞ a smirk tugs at the corners of his lips. ❝ though I’m not opposed to trying. ❞ the insecurities rise again at the thought of her in his bathroom and actually taking in the cramp space. currently there was very little. a couple travel size containers from hotels he’s lifted from and a bar of soap. pathetic given the big talk he attempts about pampering and self care. a voice in the back of his mind yells he needs to stop humoring her. it was safer when all she knew of his space was his bed.

his mind was too busy dwelling over odette realizing his apartment really was no bigger than a shoe box that he forgets to mask the look of surprise on his face at the mention of her apartment. he told himself the first time they went to his place it was a fluke. urgent needs and all that. the second time it started to feel purposeful. after the third he accepted that she just didn’t want him in her space. that apparently slumming it in his apartment was better than letting him see whatever penthouse she currently called home. ❝ crepe? how very French of you. I can’t remember the last time I made a crepe. ❞ or cooked period.

"umm, i should go." her voice doesn't feel like hers and neither do her limbs. they act on their own accord. her smile is half-hearted at best as she gets off his lap. she palms at her thigh then massages her knee, experimentally stretches out her leg. once she's satisfied, odette turns back to him and gives a pitiful thumbs up in response. HE WATCHES HER PULL AWAY. logically he knows that he should start to clean up the bloodied cotton swabs and opened packages. the reality is he remains where he is. he is unable to pull away from her orbit. he lets out a soft chuckle at her words. ❝ if you keep putting me in the knight in shining armor rule by having to go and save you every time you kiss the pavement, then that will most definitely go straight to my head. ❞ the thought of cleaning up is quickly whisked out of his mind as she snakes her ams around her neck and he feels her nose against the skin of his neck. he hears the silent plea and he cannot deny her. he doesn’t dare move his hand from the back of her neck. instead he shift, bracing his arm against her back as his other arm braces behind her legs.

they abandoned the wooden chairs they were previously sat on while he tended her wound. yet he doesn’t quiet make any firm movements in any direction. ❝ don’t be embarrassed, people fall all the time. ❞ he reassures her with equal quietness. ironic as his own set of embarrassment begins to wash over him. there was never a reason he never complained about her sneaking out of his apartment. it being used as just a bed made sense. in the dim lighting of night it was almost presentable. but now as sunlight threatened to shine on them? as she spoke about taking a shower and food? he was reminded once again he has literally nothing to offer her. for once even flynn cannot muster his usual bravado. odette’s rare softness now infecting him as well. ❝ you don’t ruin anything, ❞ what it is that she thought she even had to ruin he was unsure, ❝ but I’ll be honest. the shower doesn’t really go much above 20 degrees ❞ Celsius, of course ❝ and I’m not sure what is currently in that fridge. definitely no eggs. and maybe a couple slices of toast. ❞ he mentally whips himself for admitting all this out loud. he should have lied. or should have deflected with a joke.

odette subsequently ignores his comment about being her knight in shining armor, because she finds she is not entirely against that at all. she's still feeling shy... then he goes ahead and keeps talking. she snorts. "oh please, i'll make sure it doesn't get to your head. do you prefer more romantic walks in central park where we can run into a chance swan attack or being kicked in the shins? pick your poison." she pulls away for a moment to arch an eyebrow at him. odette is unable to hide her grin at his reaction, so she masks it by quickly ducking back towards him and hiding her face in his neck. she's decided it's one of her new favorite places. somehow, they fit together like puzzle pieces. she bends in one direction, and he cushions her every time. she goes, and he follows. it is addicting.

when he speaks again, she notices the way his voice softens and even trails off at the end. flynn is rarely hesitant, yet as he tries to hide it, it is glaringly obvious he is bothered by something. "you have a cold shower, so what? i may have a solution for that." to make her point, she nips at the thin skin at his throat then smooths the sting with a lazy kiss. "if you'd be so inclined to join me, i doubt that would be a problem at all." her gaze flickers down his bare chest appreciatively, smugness growing in her chest when she sees the hickeys that have bloomed there. now that the sting of embarrassment has softened, she takes great pleasure in the way she's sitting on his lap, his thighs solid beneath her.

but boy, is she definitely judging him by his next comment. she makes a mental note to drag him to the grocery store next time they're together. "we can go back to my place afterwards." she pauses, suddenly unsure. there's a reason why she hasn't let him over to her place either. but flynn doesn’t care that sometimes she falls, and she knows he pretends not to notice (or maybe he just doesn’t care) when she takes her pain meds. so she keeps plowing on. "i'm sure i have eggs stocked in the fridge... i also happen to make a mean crepe."

THE BLEEDING HAS STOPPED. the blood is gone. flynn knew he should let go of his grasp on her chin but he always his fingers to linger just a bit longer as he looks at her. he doesn’t believe her. he is convinced that the second he slackens his grasp on her she was evaporate into the air. gone before the morning rays make their way through his broken window. he doesn’t believe her. he can’t come up with a good reason why she would be sparing his feelings. it doesn’t seem like her. but maybe ‘I didn’t want to spend a second longer in your disgusting rat infested apartment so I wanted to sneak out and would contact you next time I need a booty call’ was just a little too hard even for odette.

a cocky grin easily slides into place. his own internal monologue continues to bounce inside of his head. ❝ too late, princess, it already did. ❞ her movement surprises him. soft lips pressed against his palm. a far cry from the image of a frantic Odette trying to escape his apartment that he created in his head. the grin melts into a genuine smile. fondness practically explodes from his chest. ❝ it was a close call but I think you’ll survive this one. let’s just try not to go kissing anymore pavement in the near future, yeah? ❞

"but no promises." her laugh is breathless. she's the first to pull away. her grip lightens from his wrist before she lets go completely. despite herself, she closes her eyes, relaxing into his hand that still cradles the back of her head. she likes the way he holds her. she always has. odette sighs, and her shoulders relax incrementally. she no longer feels the bite of the cold pavement. her guilt at being caught whispers in her head that she should go. reluctance to leave continues to gnaw at her. she knows him. flynn won't say anything if it's bothering him. but this is the first time she's managed to unsuccessfully sneak away. it's the first time he's caught her. and she feels terrible. she swallows and finally finds the courage to open her eyes.

"well. now that we're both awake..." odette pushes herself up onto her elbows then winds her arms around his neck in a silent gesture that says 'ok, pick me up.' she buries her nose in the crook of his neck. "i'm embarrassed," she admits quietly. they're words she would never say out loud during the day. but here in the near dawn not looking at him, the words feel safe. "can we try this again? i could do with a shower... and maybe some breakfast." her fingers coil into the curls at the nape of his neck as she holds him closer. nervousness makes her heart beat faster. uncertainty makes her keep talking. "did i ruin it? i didn't mean to ruin it."

"i didn't want to wake you. you looked peaceful." a half-hearted explanation and one he probably wouldn't buy. flynn looked younger when he was asleep. odette woke up earlier that morning and let herself stare at him for a heartbeat too long before she left his bed. absently, she reaches up to grab his wrist and turns her face into his grasp so her lips linger on his palm.
