THE ROOM FELT HEAVY. typically flynn didn't make a habit of drinking on his own. he'd even brag that he never really had the option to. with a bustling campus and a charming smile he found that it wasn't very difficult to round up a couple of drinking buddies. but the campus was starting to naturally thin out as the semester came to a close. plus he wasn't giving his usual happy to receive company energy. he'd been compared to a golden retriever in that respect a time or two.

he knew the voice without needing to turn around. he gave a one shoulder shrug before lifting the drink back to his lips. part of him wonders how the bloody hell the professor found out his actual birthday. it wasn't as if the identification he carried on him was real or accurate. but he stopped questioning wendell a long while ago.

HE EXPECTS HER TO BE INJURED with the way she's cradling something in her hands. his mind instantly jumped to the worst. he found that was a safe assumption when it comes to the barrel. concern melts into confusion before shifting into recognition only to go back to confusion yet again. he couldn't even remember ever bringing up his birthday. he racks his brain to try to recall when he'd mentioned it. if anything he was so used to telling people a fake day that the fact she's celebrating on the actual day catches him off guard.

A WHOLE TWO MINUTES PASS. and flynn doesn't remove his eyes from the phone. logically he knows that he probably shouldn't have been a dick and should have just called. he hates this feeling in the pit of his stomach. if he was being honest with himself ( which he'd rather not be at the moment ) he is worried about stefan. the calm cool and collected side that kept him alive this long tells him to wait longer. eventually stefan will reply. or maybe he won't. but that wasn't his problem right? right?

eugene's official birthday is may 24th. he is four months old when he is left at the door of the orphanage. miss clare had to make a guess on his birthday but was a couple weeks off.

growing up at the orphanage his birthday was often either overlooked or was mixed up with one of the other boys. this made eugene devalue the day. he doesn't see the point in celebrating a day that feels fake to him

he will lie about his birthday. often. he will often pick a day a couple months away. far enough away that he won't still be around to celebrate it. but not close enough in the past that anyone will feel the need to retroactively celebrate it.

there have been several times where he claimed his birthday was the same as someone else's to use it as a way to force a bond with said person as 'birthday twins'

adira is the one who reveals to him when his birthday actually is. they drop this knowledge as an offhanded comment. he spirals for a couple days.

in modern verses eugene does know his birthday since it is written on a sheet of paper wrapped up in his blanket. he still grows up with it being forgotten or mixed up with the other boys.

he also hates his birthday because it is a reminder that he is getting older. in his mind he doesn't expect to ever reach the age of 30. he fully expects for his life to catch up with him and for a heist to go south.
