For the training I had to do at my second job, I did 2 janitorial shifts this weekend, one yesterday and one today. The shelter is open to both males and females, there are separate bunk and bathroom areas with a shared eating space. The population that uses the shelter face the same issues; homelessness, poverty, addiction, mental illness, trauma, some have developmental disabilities. And yet, it's night and day how they behave and how they leave the shelter.

Women's side is a regular amount of clutter. Some garbage, puddles on the bathroom counter from washing faces and brushing teeth, occasionally a forgotten cup of coffee by a bed.

The men's side is a nightmare. Piss all over the floor in the bathroom both days. Both days, the disabled stall in the men's toilet is clogged because someone stuffed a whole roll of toilet paper in the bowl, cardboard tube and all. Garbage all over the floor of the bunk area, garbage stuffed in bedframes. We also had one guy last night piss in a coffee cup and hide it between his mattress and the wall. His bunk was closest to the bathroom, he would have had to walk ~10 feet to get to a toilet.

This isn't an issue of circumstances, because then the women's side would be the same and the women's side is fine. How can homeless women figure out "pee in the toilet, not on the floor" but men can't?
