if youre in the US (especially the northeast + michigan) i would avoid bagged salads/greens and generally wash your produce very thoroughly unless you want the diarrhea parasite

I’ve been seeing no information on 1. What parasite it is, 2. What symptoms other than The Shits it causes, and 3. Inconsistent info on host plants/foods. Even when I look it up. Does anyone have more info?

@keruukat the parasite is cyclospora; it causes watery, explosive diarrhea, and can cause fatigue, nausea, stomach cramps, appetite loss, vomiting. We don’t yet know which foods are contaminated in this outbreak, but we know this parasite’s usual suspects are fresh produce like raspberries, lettuce, and tomatoes, and thus the recommendation is to avoid bagged salads, uncooked greens, and raw soft fruits and vegetables. Things with rinds you don’t eat (citrus, watermelon, avocado) should be okay. Notably, my understanding is that cyclospora can *not* be washed off produce.
