âIt was impossible, of course. But when did that ever stop any dreamer from dreaming.â (x)
And just as music is the space between notes, just as the stars are beautiful because of the space between them, just as the sun strikes raindrops at a certain angle and throws a prism of color across the skyâso the space where I exist, and want to keep existing, and to be quite frank I hope I die in, is exactly this middle distance: where despair struck pure otherness and created something sublime.

Sometimes we donât want people to see how we grow; Weâre afraid we might cut them, while smoothing out our rough edges.

Dearest Queer Person, Chances are you donât even know that you are holy, or royal or magic, but you are. You are part of an adoptive family going back through every generation of human existence. ⌠You are normal. You are not a creation of the modern age. Your identity is not a âtrendâ or a âfad.â Almost every country has a recorded history of people whose identities and behaviors bear close resemblance to what weâd today call bisexuality, homosexuality, transgender identity, intersexuality, asexuality and more. Remember: the way Western culture today has constructed gender and sexuality is not the way itâs always been.

âI think youâre a fairy tale. I think youâre magical, and brave, and exquisite. And I hope youâll let me be in your story.â
RAVENCLAW: âYou think your pain and your heartbreak are unprecedented in the history of the world, but then you read. It was books that taught me that the things that tormented me most were the very things that connected me with all the people who were alive, or who ever had been alive.â âJames Baldwin

1) This is real. 2) The idea for this did come from author/actress/comedian Sara Benincasa experiences of watching an episode of American Gods and going to Cheesecake Factory blending in her subconscious (via Eater) 3) Theyâve already raised $68,707 4) Hereâs Neil Gaiman performing a commencement speech in case you forgot how lovely his voice sounds. 5) Hereâs the Cheesecake Factory menu in case you forgot how massive and indulgent it is. 6) Theyâre trying to reach the goal of $500,000 by June 20th, World Refugee Day. 7) Again, this is real. 8) Donate to this delightfully silly and great thing here on CrowdRise.
FOREVER REBLOG THE PRIVILEGE-POSTER GUY
You Canât Have It Both Ways
Thereâs a temptation when writing YA, particularly YA where they are fighting in some sort of war and the main character has a decent amount of power, to dismiss some degree of their responsibility because theyâre a child. This happens in stories with young children who, for various reasons, have a lot of power; their culpability is considered limited because theyâre not fully grown. Theyâre shielded from the impact of their actions, as well as the possible risks, by the adults in the story.
And to some degree, thatâs fair. Thereâs a reason children arenât allowed to sign contracts and arenât considered adults.
But at the same time, it makes your entire system reek of hypocrisy if children are allowed great power but arenât made to answer for it. And that might be want you want. Itâs an interesting critique of a concept to have a child who is able to do and does to great damage but isnât actually held responsible or in check for those actions. But then do it as a critique. Because adults have to answer for their actions, and the more power they have the more theyâre responsible to answering for. So decide if youâre going to treat your child/teenage characters like children/teenagers or like adults, or acknowledge the inconsistency of it.
Iâve decided to write a book. Wish me luck.

I may not be a perfect person but at least I have never yelled at an employee in a store
ok you know that âmake the princess laugh and you can have her hand in marriageâ thing?
imagine so many come in.
they try, so hard, to make her laugh.
she just sits there, morose, ignoring every man who tries to coax a smile.
one day sheâs sitting on the balcony. she just looks so sad.
of course that little thief tries to make her smile.
a girl who goes through the (semi public) royal gardens every day to pick flowers, even though technically only the royal family is allowed to do that.Â
she sees the princess while sheâs picking them up to sell on the streets, and sheâs just⌠so sad. this princess needs someone to cheer her up.
and she tries. sheâll do silly dances when she comes in, sheâll bring up frogs from ponds and act out comedies, sheâll make flower crowns and exaggerate just how hard it is.
the first few days, the princess doesnât even look at her.
then she starts noticing. this girl, trying so hard to cheer her up. she probably hasnât even heard of the hand in marriage thing, she doesnât know sheâs trying so hard for nothing.
but she does it anyway.
one day, the princess starts talking to her as she does these things. âYou do know that itâs useless?â
âWhat?â the thief says. âNo way! Iâm going to get you to laugh!â
âThe best jesters in the kingdom have tried, donât bother,â the princess declared pessimistically, staring down at the girl.
Then the thief puffs out her chest, âOf course I am! Iâll find the best jokes, even better than the jesters have found! Iâll⌠fight a fire breathing dog for them!â
Thereâs no laugh, but the corner of the princessâs mouth twitches. itâs sad how she thinks she can make me laughâŚ
the girl keeps trying, for years, making more silly stories and trading flowers for jokes rather than food or money. the princess slowly realizes the girl is getting closer and closer, asking her for responses in knock knock jokes and encouraging her to speak when she wouldnât respond immediately.
the princess eventually had the girl hanging from her balcony, holding on tight to the rail and feet wedged between the columns, grinning and telling yet another iteration of that already old chicken joke.
the princess has been smiling, slightly, but she mostly just looks unresponsive. the girl is happy, itâs better than looking so sad, like she had been years before.
the girl moves on to puns, pointing at the exotic lunch the princess was eating. âWhy do the melons have to go to get married? They cantaloupe!â
âYou only know that word because of me,â the princess snarks, but thereâs a small smile there, a bit of happiness. This little flower girl, this thief has grown into an amazing friend, a wonderful person who genuinely just wants to help. she doesnât know of the deal, only nobles and jesters could know, not the commonfolk.
âWell, it makes quite the pun,â the girl says, proud of her joke. a smile! what an accomplishment!
âSayâŚâ she continued, âWhat would you call a princess who got swept up in conversation a thief?â she pulled a flower out of her pocket, waving it in front of the princessâs face. the princessâs eyes crossed to see the flower before they rolled at the obvious setup.
though, it was interesting that it obviously involved them.
âI donât know,â she admitted, sighing in preparation for another horrible pun. âWhat?â
the girl grinned. âA pretty theft!â she exclaimed, ticking the flower against the princessâs nose.
the princess froze for a moment, stunned. she had been complimented a million times over, called graceful by etiquette instructors, been called beautiful by many a suitor, been called wonderful by her mother before⌠she stopped thinking about that.Â
she had never been called pretty.
she burst into laughter at the commonplace compliment, as if she was some sort of milkmaid who had somehow grown up to be good looking! it was ridiculous, the notion, yet somehow it had her blushing all the same.
then she suddenly stopped, realizing what sheâd done.
the flower thief was staring at her in amazement, a blush of her own speckling her cheeks. her flower tilted out from in front of the princessâs nose, as if it had itâs own amazement.
âWowâŚâ the girl breathed. sheâd never heard something so beautiful in her life.
The princess was silent, knowing what she had just done. She had just laughed for the first time in years.
The girl may not have been aware of the arrangement, but she was quickly swept up in it. A maid had heard the laughter and burst in, to find the thief and the princess, caught up in each otherâs eyes, reveling in what had just happened.
The wedding was beautiful, a flower filled affair, a wonderful nod to how it happened. The king was so happy to see his daughter with someone who made her smile for once, tearing up as they were wed.
The princessâs laugh was still incredibly rare. She still had a hard time smiling. But a well timed joke from the girlâ no, her wifeâ and another flower that had a hidden meaning behind it, than maybe, maybe you would hear it.
After all, the princess had finally laughed with the one she loved.
fucking adorable Iâm going to punch something
