Fear is intimately linked to the feeling of abandonment.
Jesus, in his compassion, offers a great promise to calm our hearts: "And I will ask the Father and he will give them another Comforter to accompany them always: the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot accept because it does not see him or know him. But you do know him, because he lives with you and will be in you. I will not leave you orphans; I will return to you" (John 14:16-18).
* An orphan has parents who have died, but the Spirit reveals to us that Jesus is alive.
* An orphan is left alone, while the Spirit brings us closer to God.
* An orphan has lost his provider, but the Spirit provides for all things.
* An orphan is left without instruction, but the Spirit teaches us all things.
* An orphan has no defender, but the Spirit is protective.
The Holy Spirit is the guarantee, the seal that assures that we belong to God (2 Corinthians 1:22). In the ancient world, the seal was used to identify, protect and set aside something as one's own. You can be sure that you are the son of the Father! Your relationship as a child does not depend on your emotions or circumstances.
Through the Holy Spirit, we can have an intimate and close relationship with our Father: "And you have not received a spirit that enslaves you to fear. On the contrary, they have received the Spirit of adoption, through which we claim: 'Abba, Father!'" (Romans 8:15). We call Abba! In our anguish, and He listens to us, attends to us and protects us.
