Ohh right, yeah the reason I don't like that term is because I think it's redundant and has a tone of trying to be progressive and tackle a made-up social justice issue. My problem with the term isn't that the United States doesn't warrant unique distinction, the issue is that "American" already has that distinction since virtually nobody reads "American" and interprets it as "North American" or "The Americas". Canadians and Mexicans would not refer to themselves as "American"*... and as someone who grew up in Canada, I can attest that many people get rather offended if you call them that!

So I think it's really silly when people—usually people from the US, no less—try to paint "American" as a term that's unfair to people from other North American countries when nobody from those countries actually cares. If you said "Americans are so stupid with their guns" the average Canadian wouldn't protest with "not true!! I'm (North) American and we don't have that issue here in Canada!!!" they'd probably go "lmao yeah so true america sux." It comes across as very sanctimonious to try to fix something that was never an issue for anyone except maybe 5 weirdos online to begin with.
