Mornings with Luke Hemmings were quiet. Not silentโjust soft. The kind of quiet where the world hadnโt fully caught up yet, where everything felt slower, gentler. Sunlight slipped through the curtains in thin, warm lines, landing across the bed in uneven patches.
Y/N was already awake. She usually was. Curled slightly into Lukeโs side, half-hidden in one of his hoodies, her fingers loosely tangled in the fabric of his shirt like sheโd fallen asleep holding on.
Luke noticed. He always noticed.
He shifted carefully, not wanting to wake her, but the movement was enough.
โYouโre awake,โ Y/N murmured, voice still thick with sleep.
He smiled a little, brushing his thumb softly over her hand. โSo are you.โ
โMm. Donโt like mornings.โ
โYou say that every morning.โ
โAnd I mean it every time.โ
He huffed a quiet laugh. She didnโt move awayโif anything, she shifted closer, resting her head properly against his chest now, listening to the steady rhythm of his heartbeat like it was something grounding.
Luke let his hand settle on her back, slow and absent as he traced small patterns there.
It was quiet again. But not empty. Never empty.
โHey,โ she said after a moment.
There was a pause, like she was deciding whether to say it.
โDo you ever feel likeโฆ itโs going to catch up to you?โ
Lukeโs hand stilled slightly. โWhat do you mean?โ
She exhaled softly. โLike the stuff you donโt talk about. The things you push down. Like one day itโs just going toโโ she made a small motion with her hand, โโshow up all at once.โ
Luke didnโt answer straight away. He understood the question too well.
โSometimes,โ he admitted quietly.
She nodded against him, like she expected that answer. โI think about it a lot. Like Iโm just waiting for it.โ
Luke tilted his head slightly, looking down at her. โYou donโt have to wait for it on your own.โ
She smiled faintly at that, but it didnโt fully reach her eyes. โI know.โ
But he could tell she didnโt fully believe it.
Luke shifted a little so he could see her better, his hand moving to gently tilt her chin upโjust enough to get her to look at him.
โI mean it,โ he said softly. โWhatever it is, whenever it hitsโyouโre not doing that alone.โ
Her expression softened, something in her shoulders relaxing just slightly. โYou say that like itโs easy.โ
โItโs not,โ he admitted. โBut itโs easier than pretending itโs not there.โ
A small silence settled between them.
โYouโre good at saying the right thing,โ she said after a moment.
He smiled faintly. โIโm really not.โ
That made his chest tighten in a quiet, unfamiliar way.
โProbably because you already know what Iโm thinking,โ he said.
She huffed a soft laugh. โYeah. Thatโs true.โ
Luke brushed a piece of hair away from her face, his fingers lingering for just a second longer than necessary.
โYou do that thing too, you know,โ he added.
โWhere you act like youโre fine, even when youโre not.โ
She groaned quietly, burying her face back into his chest. โDonโt call me out first thing in the morning.โ
Another pause. Then, quieterโโIโm trying to be better about it.โ
Lukeโs hand returned to its place on her back, steady and warm. โYou are. I can tell.โ
She didnโt respond, but he felt the way she relaxed a little more into him. That was enough.
After a while, they both got upโslow, unhurried. The apartment stayed quiet as they moved around it together. Luke made coffee. Y/N leaned against the counter, still half-asleep, watching him like it was something interesting.
โYouโre staring,โ he pointed out.
โI like watching you do normal things,โ she said.
โMaking coffee is interesting now?โ
โWhen you do it, yeah.โ
He rolled his eyes, but there was a small smile there. โAlright.โ
She reached for one of the mugs before he could stop her.
โYou burned your hand yesterday.โ
She laughed softly, taking the mug anyway.
Moments like thisโsmall, quiet, a little messyโfelt like something Luke didnโt want to lose. Because it wasnโt just about the big things. It was this. Y/N leaning against him while he stirred sugar into his coffee. Her hand finding his without thinking. The way neither of them felt like they had to fill every silence.
Later, they ended up back on the couch. A blanket thrown over both of them, some random show playing in the background that neither of them were really paying attention to. Her head rested on his shoulder this time, her fingers tracing absent patterns along his arm.
โHey,โ she said quietly.
โIโm glad itโs you.โ
Luke didnโt respond immediately. He just turned his head slightly, resting it against hers.
They stayed like that for a while. No pressure. No expectations. Just the quiet understanding that whatever they both carriedโthey didnโt have to carry it alone anymore.
And somehow, that made everything feel a little less heavy.
