Greetings weary travelers, things are steaming up for The Remainder as our Steam page has gone live today!
If you’re intrigued by what you’ve seen so far, click here and go wishlist it!
The Remainder is a dark fantasy story made of psychological puzzles, romance, and the unexpected.
Greetings fellow magi!
This is built upon a sketch which Ze started a few days ago. I wanted something simple to occupy me since I didn’t feel like doing the work I should be doing just now. (Working on a Kofi goal reward scene being one of them. Why are couple scenes so difficult? T_T )
Ze says Ilar looks a bit like a gloomy delinquent here which wasn’t exactly planned :p Past few weeks have been meh for me so maybe I’m venting a bit through this.
Android version of The Remainder is coming soon!
Redesigning the game for portrait mode sounded fun, so I gave it a shot.
I coded it from the ground up. I wanted it to feel like a game meant for phones and not just a convenient export that kinda works.
It won’t contain the gallery or any animations so the file size is lighter and more suitable for mobile devices.
The text will display line-by-line and the fonts are bigger. If you were intimidated by the amount of on-screen text in the pc version, this option might be more to your taste.
I changed the design of the UI slightly and I’m very pleased with it. Now I even feel like going back to tweak the original version too.
Hopefully, it will be nice and clean. The version is more or less finished, I will sit on it for a few more days and make super sure there are no bugs.
After that’s finished and released I’ll look into making an iOS version. Follow me for future updates!
Today I procrastinated by making a new version of cover art for our Itch.io page where you can play our demo.

At last, I can share with you the screenshot of our newest fuzzy baby.
Friend or foe? Time will tell.
We expanded the end of the demo to encompass the appearance of our second character and we hope the ending is even more cliffhangy than before. *w*
A new update!
Download the newest version here.
Joke - Always start with a joke, they say.
A discussion between two magi became so heated that they literally threw books at each other,
it was quite a violent exchange of words.
Main Character - Visual Design Available
You can see yourself in the game now if you so choose. Vyn fen Aran has always been a concrete character with a past and a personality when we started writing The Remainder, and now we've finally found a design that resonates with how we see them in our heart.
For now, all you see is the image in the mirror, but with more funding from you, our dear supporters, we intend to create scene arts where Vyn appears. More funding will mean more variations of their design, each unique and fit to be High Magus. You can also choose not to have a visual representation if for some reason the design does not resonate with you.
Vyn is not the only thing to step out of the shadows in this update, however...
New Character - Friend or Foe?
A wild character appears! At the end of Act 1, you will meet a mysterious figure and have the choice of interacting with them in a significant way in future chapters, which brings me to...
Act 2 - Full Steam Ahead
We've decided to produce Act 2, and potentially more chapters, full-time starting from now. It should be completed within ~3 months' time and be a tad shorter in length but much wider in width than Act 1, by which we mean more branching possibilities. We'd also like to make overall improvements to the game, including adding more scene arts, more professional music, possibly more character and scene animations, all of which depends on how much funding we receive, which is where you come in...
Ko-fi Goal
With the launch of our ko-fi page, we've already begun receiving generous support from backers, for which we're endlessly grateful.
We plan to set up goals so that you know exactly where your funding is going, for example, the current goal is:
Unlock 1x scene art with Ilar and MC, and it's currently 40% funded.
As a backer, you will be able to vote on art, music, and writing that you'd like to see more of, and have a say in the game's development.
You will also get a collection of other exclusive rewards, such as...
Story And Tea With Ilar
Story and Tea with Ilar is an interactive fiction experience that's part of our backer reward. Every two weeks or so, Ilar brings you a special tea blend, a new pastry, and a short story from The World of ~2000 words. The first story has already gone out to early supporters, and it's a great way to learn more about The Remainder's characters and world-building, and a great way to support us.
Thank You, Our Supporters
We're extremely pleased and grateful for all the support you've given us, your comments, rating, funding, and the time you spent playing and interacting with us in some way have all been valuable in helping us create. Thank you!
And to finish with one of the new artworks added in this latest update:
Greetings weary travellers! If you are familiar with our story, you know it is all about two magi, Ilar and Vyn(the MC). Ze and I have always imagine Vyn as a very special character, with their history, their hopes and fears, someone who breathes and lives.
At the same time, I know that some readers like not having a visual representation, but rather like to step into the story and imagine how their MC looks, which is why I’d been avoiding illustrating scenes with both Ilar and the MC. At one point I thought about not showing Vyn at all in the game, but the more we wrote them the more vivid they became. I couldn’t let them go.
So I want to try giving you the option of playing as our Vyn, the design we felt the most fitting for the story, the one you see in in this post. Later when we get more funding, i can make more designs for you to choose from, so you can look like the magus that resonates with you. You will get to see yourself as Vyn represented in scene arts too.
And if you don’t want any of the designs, or simply prefer to not have the amorphous image in your mind be set in stone, you can choose not to have a visual design for the MC in the game, and you won’t see any scene art that involves them either.
It seems like the best of both worlds.
Lasttly, I want to thank everyone who liked us and left us comments and questions. I’m not very proficient at using tumblr so couldn’t figure out how to reply to individual comments easily, but I read every one of them and appreciate the support very much. Thank you, truly.
Going back to basics of illustration
Hey there, last week I decided to make some tutorials on how to study to level up art skills, it was originally just for a mentorship student of mine, but as I was making it, I thought "hey, this stuff might be useful to other people", so I've decided to make it more of a series of basic illustration lessons.
Here’s an example on a somewhat complex image done at level 4, which means using more than 4 tones and shapes with more than 4 sides, explanation below.
I want to make something that will give the most benefit in the long run, and decided on some fundamental stuff, like:
simple shape design value design edge variations color play texture effects In other words, things that once you know, you can use to paint basically anything with. They're some of the most useful and beautiful things I've learned and make use of every day. I'm using a RPG level system for the lessons level 1 - use only two tones, and shapes of no more than 4 sides. level 2 - same thing with 3 tones level 3 - 4 tones level 4 - 4+ tones and 4+ sides Edge variations, colors, and textures will be in level 5 and above. I might encourage most people to stay in level 1-5 until they're quite good and having a lot of fun with the process. Leave me a comment and tell me what you think! If you want to learn art, does it seem like something you'd be interested in? If you're already a seasoned artist, have you got any suggestions for me? I'll probably throw it on youtube when it's done, so feel free to sub me there: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UChY-fing0SBJKxilumoeNug If you’re interested in a mentorship, or want to ask me questions, my discord is the best place for it: https://discord.gg/ZnKDUc7wyG

I’ve been doing some studies, developing a style to use for future projects.
Some of this might be seen in The Remainder.
Next up I’ll post the next stage of this process including some full body studesigns(That’s study-turned-designs) of Magi(that’s plural for magus).
Stay tuned!

Suddenly it all feels real. @_@
Time for The Remainder update! Here is a small preview of a few different expressions Ilar can make. (If you can even see them in this poor butchered little gif)
I’m still busy with writing and coding but it’s going very well. it should be ready for testing in a week or so. Would anyone be willing to give it a shot? We need all the feedback we can get. DM if you are interested. (I hope we will have discord for that soonish, but we are so busy I always forget to do it. X)
Also ~ slow burn romance? @_@ Complicated characters who don’t know how to express their emotions? Looming death? Humor so we don’t go mad?
yes please
(I’m tired and out of coffee)
A light blooms, I open my eyes, the pain in my gut beats a hasty retreat.
I push myself up, looking at my hands, whole, then survey the maze of debris swirling around the Abyss’dvara.
This heartvessel… I’m still struggling, but a little less now. I stand a little straighter, feeling a bit taller, thinking maybe I can learn to stop struggling like I’ve done before, maybe.
Things come into sharp focus, I hear the rustling and clinking of debris, the wind and rain brushing across the roof.
I can do this. Dodging one debris after another, I can do this. Eyes fixed on the desk, on the escape, I can do this.

Curious about the story of The Remainder?
Start from the beginning. (Just a taste, we are still working on it)
It is our hope to have a playable demo by the end of this year where our visuals and writing will come together.
We are so excited to share our small world with you and would welcome any feedback. This is our very fist game so we are discovering and learning new things day by day.
Please enjoy it and let us know what you think! If you wish to help us spread the word so more people can find our story.
Thank you <3

Help us make our visual novel, round 2.
TL;DR
Comment which you like, C, or D, or both, or neither.
We have 8 potential variations right now and would love to hear what people have to say about them all, it will help us learn and make a better game, thanks for taking part!
Full description:
Hey fellow humans, so my wife + good friend + I, all artists, have finally started working on our first indie game, a mystery visual novel about a spell gone wrong, a partner lost, and fixing your own mistakes. Here are our first sketches for the character that the player will be interacting with. We're trying a lot of directions so it'd be nice to see how people respond to them, if you have the time, tell me which you prefer, A or B, and if you want to tell us about what you like about the designs, that'd be cool ^^
The Story: You're a mage whose magic ritual went horribly wrong, and your partner's mind ends up trapped in the Ether, while your body is intact but your memory is lost. So with their voice and a mental image of them in your head, the two of you work together to reverse the spell and save yourselves.
The sketches are for the player's partner.
One thing we'd like to do with the art style is to create characters who are visually compelling but not very stereotypically gendered or sexualized. The 3 of us are all kind of like that IRL so it's only natural.
Thanks for participating! ^^
