Hey I’m gonna come out swinging. Do not fucking erase the sexuality of queer characters. I don’t care if you think the gay man is hot. Make your dumb oc a man if you want to fuck the gay guy. If you can’t see why erasing a characters queerness, especially if it’s CANON queerness, for your selfship is fucked up, I don’t know what to say to you. It’s fucked up when straight guys do it to lesbians, it’s fucked up when straight women do it to gay men. You don’t get a pass. There are *vanishingly* small queer characters in media, despite all the progress we’ve made, and you don’t get to take that from us no matter how hot you think the person is. You are erasing queerness. I can’t stop you, but I NEED you to know that’s what you’re doing.
"Erm... Saying you shouldn't do bigoted things with minority characters is policing fandom, bro ☝️🤓 "
Bitch, you can't fucking take a gay "character" and erase their gayness.
You are taking a minority "character"... A "character" with canonical minority status... And making them... *Not* gay.
Are you kidding me?
Would you say this about fucking whitewashing? Would you say this about turning a trans character cisgender? I think the fuck not.
This is not policing fandoms. This is called *not acting in homophobic ways* that *actively* hurt people's perception and treatment of queer people in the real fucking world.
Straight people thinking it's okay to just erase canon queerness because they don't like it or wanna fuck the queer person is just... *Horrifically* selfish homophobia.
It tells queer people that we are only allowed to be queer when it's amusing for straights. As soon as they decide they wanna fuck us, or they don't like us being queer anymore, they can just erase it. Change it to fit their wants and needs.
Doing that shit with "characters" *does* reflect and contribute to a real-world disrespect and disregard for taking queerness seriously.
And no. We *know* there's worse shit going on in the world. We know this isn't nearly as harmful as other acts of homophobia going on.
But this *still* contributes to that culture that *ties into* that other shit, and this straight bullshit *still* holds a power over queer people on a more subtle level. It *matters* what you do with minority characters in fiction. Always. How you view and treat minority characters speaks volumes for how you view minorities in the real world.
