bank manager is such an underrated character in fleabag because he is a reminder that you have the power to become a better person. in season one, what he wanted was to be able to be a good person, to be a source of joy in the lives of the people he cares about. it's such a direct contrast to what fleabag says she wants in that moment ("to cry all the time").
i think it's so easy to get stuck in your emotions and just the overal shittiness of life, as fleabag does so often, that our worldview becomes so narrow that it seems like the only thing that matters are those emotions. that narrow worldview prevents you from wanting and chasing the life you actually want to be living, as the bank manager goes on to do at the end of season 1 and in season 2.
