Question for pen-and-ink people: When should I bust out the sharpie for the solid black fills? I thought I could use it as a way of shading, but it looks more like it’s only for things that are actually black.
Sharpies can turn brown over time. For quick, larger fills, I use a Micron brush pen, which has better, longer-lasting ink.

if my understanding of cybertronian gender is right, transformers are essentially like the gems in su? like theyre non binary but use masculine pronouns ? right? so jhiaxus disrupted that when he operated on arcee and made her more “feminine” thereby introducing the concept of binary gender? this is all so confusing i feel like im missing something
Originally, yes, that’s what IDW was doing. That was the storyline - Jhiaxus forcibly altered Arcee in an attempt to bring gender into the Cybertronian race.Â
Then came the colonists, which effectively retconned the entire Jhiaxus experiment angle. Suddenly, not only were there female Cybertronians, but they had always existed. It was just Cybertron that was a total sausage party.
Faced with a plot twist that basically made no sense no matter how you looked at it, IDW simply chose to move on and not even bother trying to explain it. In fact, they even seem to have their characters react just like the fans, as if it were some type of in-joke. That was probably for the best, since any explanation they put forth would probably be incredibly stupid.
So anyhoo, it’s confusing because it makes no sense. It’s confusing because they didn’t address it. But just go with it. That’s what IDW did.
So in Titans Return, most of the heads are based on something.  Of course they are, this is a G1-rehash line.  Everything is something old.  Sure, Blurr’s headguy is really Stylor and Scourge’s headguy is really Nightstick (Fracas and Nightstick trade models all the time anyway), and Sentinel Prime, Galvatron, Blaster, and Soundwave are themselves, but…
…the Titan Masters size class, which are just heads and a transforming vehicle, gives us all these recognizable noggins that transform into…. not their previous partners.  I have no idea where these designs are from.  Nightbeat sure ain’t either Muzzle or Quig!  And considering every other damn headguy in Titans Return is a callback to SOMETHING, it’s driving me mad that I don’t know who these guys are. Â
For a bright shining moment I thought Horri-Bull might be himself, but there’s too many conspicuous differences and I was once again defeated.
But seriously, this is causing this nerd some anxiety. Â WHO ARE THEY???
All right, I might have the most dumb, mundane solution to this.
All of the Titan Masters function as part of one of their Titan Master vehicle’s modes, so maybe their chest stuff is supposed to look like random engine-like machinery instead of robot torsos.  Not all of them have their robot stuff visible in this combined-with-vehicle mode – some of them just fold over on themselves and plug in somewhere – but for the purposes of cross-compatibility with their wavemates, maybe looking like machinery (or beasty clawy stuff for the one animal guy) is the case for everyone regardless.
So, Emiliano Santalucia showed the original design art for the wave 1 Titan Masters at @tf-nation today, and it turns out they were intended to be original characters. They had brand-new (really cool) head-mode face designs too which were then subsequently replaced with the existing-guy faces later in the design process. Mystery solved!
