Next on the UMPL we have Jazz Emu with Every Body is Normal. So firstly, its Jazz Emu. I have yet to find a Jazz Emu video that doesn't belong on the UMPL. This one covers biology, misogyny, and making noises with your eye socket.

Today's entry on the UMPL My Uncle Got a Hot Tub by Wolves of Glendale is a lovely story of three guys and a hot tub.
Today on the UMPL we have Kim Dracula with Molecular Conversion. This is the epitome of an UMPL video in that it covers both "What the hell did I just watch" and "What the hell did I just listen to". 11/10 The extra 1 is for the bangs.
My daughter has started to sleep in her own bed!
She has been putting herself to sleep for a while already, but her crib is still in our room, which means when she wakes up at 5 in the morning, I wake up at 5 in the morning....
Sooo. I have been pushing hard to get her bedroom and toddler bed into a working state.
Recently (before the move to the toddler bed) she has been very playful at night. Sitting and her crib and just playing for close to a hour before falling asleep. This wasn't really a problem, as it meant she sometimes only woke at at 5:30!
Then she discovered that she could climb under the mattress of her crib. This was just so much fun that no sleep could be had while under the mattress, and she would only settle down once we put her back on top of the mattress.
We got the mattress for the toddler bed on a Monday. We didn't expect her to sleep in it that night. We expected a bit of an acclimatisation period. Instead, the moment she saw it she ran to lay down on it and just laughed with joy.
She was very happy to lie there with her bottle during bedtime story, and when we told her she could pick her own book to read, she almost bowled me over running to her bookshelf.
She was very happy and calm the whole night. None of the restless she had been having recently in her crib. It feels like everything came together at just the right time.
My night did not go as well. Her not being in the room was disconcerting. I would grab the monitor at the slightest sound and didn't have any significant length of uninterrupted sleep. So even though I got to lay in bed until 7, I wasn't particularly better rested than when she was waking me at 5.
The afternoon nap was in our room again. There were a lot of people in the house and a lot of activity near her room so it just made sense.
The next night she insisted on going to bed in her crib in our room and played so wildly that the mattress almost came completely out of the crib.
After much tidying I tried to get her back in her crib, but she refused, insisting instead to be taken to her room. She got into bed with a chosen book, and calm the rest of the night.
She was awake, but still lying in bed when I woke up.
I can not overstate how joyful I am right now.
I have now slept until 7 for multiple days! She still likes to go to her crib at the start of the evening, but actually falls asleep in her toddler bed.
Today's addition to the UMPL. This entry is mostly for the visual aspects. I will try to understand the actual music when I can think clearly again.

Send Help (2026)
This movie was fun, but I feel like the ending let it down. Spoilers ahead.
In the last minute of the movie we see Linda, now a powerful executive playing golf. This mirrors the start of the movie where the reason she didn't get a promotion was that she wasn't presentable enough and didn't play golf.
This would of been a nice ending if we didn't just watch her thrive in the wilderness and do everything in her power to stay there.
So while the ending may seem poetic it feels hollow.
It should have ended with them tearing each other apart in the house. Doing more and more damage until they both die. Closing scene is the rich guy finding their corpses in the house.
New magic is dangerous. We have a fairly good idea of how the æther interprets the classic spells. You change one element, say using basmati rice instead of jasmine rice, and suddenly you have to dig through seven layers of abstractions and hope that the æther understands that rice is rice. Or it's not ok, and your new spell ends up killing every person who eats rice grown in the same field.
We are dealing with a wildly non human intelligence. The scope for misunderstanding is vast, and similarly the scope of consequences.
It has taken us decades to build the understanding we have of the classic spells. Take Vusi's Concoction for Vast Strength for example. Originally, it just said to use a raw egg in tomato juice. The spell worked beautifully, and King Magnafur won six battles by feeding it to his soldiers. Then it didn't work, and his army was decimated. They eventually tracked down the problem. The farmer who supplied the eggs had changed the mix of his chicken feed. The æther saw the materials going into the eggs as a crucial part of what made them the eggs used to define the spell.
This is why modern spells builds on abstractions that have been well mapped out. Experiment at your own peril, and preferably far away from others.
I got an alert that we were approaching our machine to machine oauth2 token limit.
The auth0 quota page has a nice report showing how many tokens each application got each day. It shows that one application went from requesting 1 token a day, to around 280 tokens a day as of a couple of days ago.
A quick check of our release log shows that there was a release for that service a couple of days after the issue started, and the release before that was a month ago. So very unlikely this was a code change.
This App only gets a token on startup and when the token expires. The service hasn't restarted since the last release.
I double check all the code paths that could get a token and nothing looks off and the logs show no sign of token refreshing. Hmmm.
The logs show in unusually high number of 404s. Requests for `/php/admin` and other random pages. Someone is trying to hack this service. I'm aware things like this is just the background noise of the internet, but this is the one service that is not currently behind the WAF (for very annoying and tedious reasons), and it is currently getting a new auth token every 5 minutes, with no evidence of those token requests in its logs.
After the initial panic I noticed that all the 404s happened after the token usage increase. Why would you keep spamming random endpoints if you are already in the system?
Ok, deep breath, back to first principles. Check the auth logs, find the excess token requests, see they are all coming from one of our ips, but not an IP associated with the cluster this service is running in. After asking around, turns out this is an IP for the new cluster we are migrating too. On the new cluster the service is in a crash loop due to the cluster being only half set up. Pod scaled to zero, wait 10 minutes and confirm no new tokens were requested. Mystery solved, and it only took most of the day.
For the rest of the day I think I'll just stare at my screen and question my life choices.
At 18 months you were running around the garden throwing a golf ball around. You were having a lot of fun. Then you saw that one of the pot plants had fallen over due to the strong winds that day. You stopped and picked up this pot half your size and put it beach upright before carrying on to play with your golf ball. It bounced really nicely
You said your first sentence today. "Sushi messs" Lucy had spilled some and you had to tell

Today I took one more step into parenthood. Specifically I stepped on Lego.
"Where my pocket?" Asks my two year old daughter.
Today you are dressed in clothes from the girl isle. I'm sorry I can't give you satisfying answer.
Rage was an unfamiliar emotion until I had a child. Before that nothing was important enough to warrant Rage.
Now I sit here trying to calm down from dealing with a deadly dense person.

Getting rid of the Yak
Or
Why the hell am I writing a tech blog on Tumblr‽
Over the years I have often wanted to write about my explorations with code, but I always get caught up Yak Shaving about how to actually publish it.
Of course I can’t use any of the Standard Tools! Nothing works quite like I want. I end up in a cycle of research and design and eventually get distracted by the next shiny thing. Getting distracted is fine, but I don't get a chance to write down what I did/found because I'm still busy shaving the actual mechanism I would use to do the writing.
So I have decided to throw the yak out with the bikeshed and just pick a platform that just doesn’t present any temptation for fiddling with its internal processes.
So now I am here. No Hugo, no Jekyll, no Wordpress, and definitely no custom pipeline based on emacs org-mode.
For those who know that last item probably revealed everything you need to know about me to understand why I am particularly vunerable to yak shaving.
I have had enough of recursive side quests. No more endlessly tweaking configs. Well no more side quests tweaking configs to write a blog. I'm still an Emacs user I will never stop messing with my config, but now I am no longer letting it get in the way of just writing shit down on the internet.
Hopefully I actually publish something besides this…

Monster Person #3
Monster seeking someone for Netflix and Chills
Yeah, we are just going to watch all the series that Netflix cancelled after one season. I hate closure.
Monster Person #2
Monster who knows exactly where those 'missing' campers went
When they heard the searchers dogs it took everything he knew to stop them from running off.
The fear oozed off them, but he knew the dogs would never smell it. Nothing outside of the glade could ever find anything that was inside the glade.
Eventually the dogs passed and the campers calmed down, only slightly, but enough for him to get more of the story out of them.
Over the years they had told multiple people in town about what their guardian was doing to them, but no one wanted to believe.
The camping trip had presented the perfect opportunity for escape. Their guardian was a survivalist, they had thought they would have all the supplies they needed to get far away from the town that refused to believe.
Unfortunately one of them had fallen during the first day when they had just been running through the woods and badly hurt their leg. Then the plan became to live in the woods until the leg was good enough to walk on.
Things had been going well until their radio squawked. Usually that wasn't bad, just park rangers saying park ranger things. This time however it was a search party. For them. Their guardian was so respected that half the town had turned up to search for them.
They had tried to run, but the leg made it impossible. They could hear the searchers closing in, and then they had been pulled into the glade.
Once they had finished their tale, they asked his name, why he had hidden them. He had almost forgotten his name, it has been so long since he had talked to any of his own kind. When they struggled to pronounce it, he relented and said they could call him Bigfoot.
As to why he has helped them. He didn't like being seen, and he could feel the intensity of their need to be hidden, so against their better judgement he had brought them to the glade.
He was glad he had saved them, but warned them that once the leg was healed they would have to leave the glade, and once outside they would never be able to come back in. Only his mind could visit the glade more than once.
The campers eventually slept, the bigfoot listened to the search party growing more distant. Eventually the search party would stop, the leg would heal, and the campers would leave. They could find a distant places and live their lives.
He would never get that. Everytime he stepped out the glade someone took a picture and then for weeks the woods would be full of people looking for the monster. He was stuck here. Forever.
