Things I Wish Someone Had Told Me Before I Got Guinea Pigs.
1. Guinea pigs take up a lot of space. And if you disagree with this, then your piggie is probably in too small of a cage. ;c My two boys live in a 3x4 C&C cage which takes up an entire corner of my living room. I’ve legit had friends come over and ask me if I had a puppy because of the size of their cage. Not only that, but their supplies are literally in every room of my tiny apartment except that bathroom. That said, I have a tendency to buy lots of things that my guinea pigs don’t necessarily need when they go on sale cause you just never know when you’ll need that extra hidey hut amirite?
2. Hay is expensive af. Sure, that little $6 bag of hay doesn’t seem like too much at the time, but that cost adds up. My pigs blow through at 15oz bag of Oxbow hay in just under a week. A month’s supply is 24 dollars, and over the course of a year, that comes to nearly $300. However, there are certainly cheaper alternatives out there! (bulk orders, local farms, etc). 3. Bedding is also expensive af. Same deal. With a cage as big as mine, one bag of Carefresh lasts two full cleanings, and at $20 per 60L a bag, it’s just not economical. I switched to aspen shavings for a short time and at $13 per approx. 60L, it was more manageable (and smelled really nice), but wasn’t nearly as soft and was still a pain to clean. I’m currently using fleece cage liners which have proven the best option for me. While easier to clean, they’re pretty pricey for someone that doesn’t know how to sew. a 3x4 cage liner usually averages between 50 and 60 dollars, and that’s without shipping. ;c 4. VEGGIES! Another expense. This is usually $20 per 10 days for their staples (lettuce, carrots, cilantro, bell peppers) + a treat or two. I also squeeze my own produce into this budget, so theirs is probably closer to like $10/10 days.
5. Invest in a handheld vacuum. I fortunately already had one before my guinea pigs, but I cannot tell you how essential this thing has become. I use it multiple times a week. You could also invest in one of those handheld broom + dustpan combos if that’s more your speed.
6. Invest in re-usable cleaning gloves. If you don’t want to go the fleece liner route, you’re probably gonna wanna use gloves when you’re cleaning out all that bedding (assuming you have a proper sized cage, that is) because there are few things more unpleasant than having to remove wet bedding with your bare hands. Trust me.
7. You’re gonna have to trim their nails. They’re gonna squirm. They’re gonna squeal. They’ll probably try to nip you. It’s gonna take you 5 to 10 minutes to finish one paw. You’re gonna watch 7 internet videos on it that give you tips and tricks to make it better. None of them work. Nail-trimming sucks for all parties involved and that’s just the way it is.
8. Guinea pigs need vets, too. Guinea pigs are animals. Animals get sick. It’s just a thing that happens. It’s also better that you just already have a vet that’s familiar with their piggies when they’re healthy rather than wait until they’re sick to take them somewhere. Be prepared for this expense though, b/c exotic vets can be hard to find + a little pricey.
9. Guinea pigs are not cats, nor are they dogs. Which is obvious, right? But what I mean is that they don’t behave in the same ways that a cat or dog do. Despite popular belief, most (not all!) guinea pigs don’t really like to be pet/cuddled, though they will tolerate it for a little while. This is because they don’t show affection in the ways that most of us are accustomed to. They’re also prey animals with strong prey instinct and, as a result, are generally pretty skittish. It takes a lot of time to gain a guinea pig’s trust, because they haven’t been domesticated in the same (people-oriented) fashion as our feline and canine friends. And, even when that trust has been established, they’ll still run first and wheek later when faced with something unfamiliar/remotely unsettling.
10. Guinea pigs are a commitment. Again, this sounds obvious, but judging by the amount of people that post their guinea pigs for adoption in various corners of the internet due to lost interest, I don’t think a lot of people realize it. When you get a guinea pig pair (because you def. should have a pair!), you’re signing up for at least 5 years of the things I’ve listed above, plus dozens of things I haven’t. Make sure you’re ready for all of it before adding one of these little buds to your family!

Ferrets Part 1: The Basics
First off, let’s start with some very basic husbandry principles! Domestic ferrets, Mustela putorius furo, are obligate carnivores with a similar digestive tract to cats. This means that feeding diets high in carbohydrates without the supervision or recommendation of a veterinarian is not recommended. Some cat/kitten foods may be appropriate if a ferret diet is not available to you, but this should be run by your veterinarian. It is also important to avoid excessively sugary foods. Ferrets are cute, I know, but sugary treats should be kept to a minimum!
If you are from the U.S. (sorry, but that’s where I happen to be), then almost all of the ferrets produced and sold in the country come from Marshall Farms in upstate NY. They sell commercially available diets and all ferrets that come out of their production are desexed and ‘descented’. They will have 2 dots on their pinna to show that this procedure has been performed. Marshall Farms has used their own breeding program and at some point, there was some inbreeding. Long story short, they have made a beautiful model of oncogenesis–which we will get to later!
There are some private breeders in the US, but Marshall Farms has such a monopoly on the industry that it means you will likely not get away from the health concerns associated with the breeding done at Marshall Farms. It’s good to check with the breeder to see what issues their ferrets have had before investing, but there is such a thing as love at first sight, so I will not fault anyone for that!
If your ferret is not desexed/ you plan on breeding your ferret, it’s important to know that they are induced ovulaters and are seasonally polyestrus. Ovulation only occurs after being physically bred. The heat cycle is a little unfortunate for ferrets because if they are not bred, they remain in their heat cycle. If that sounds like being in heat for days on end might not be fun, you’re right. When I say seasonally polyestrus, that is more in the wild. The advent of electrical lighting can affect when these ferrets will go into heat, despite the weather outside.
Ferrets are incredibly social creatures. They need lots of loving and if you are not going to be with them a lot, why not have two? I mean, look at these three. Do you really want just one?
Ferrets Part 2: We’ll discuss some common diseases.
Hypovitaminosis A (avian)
Vitamin A is an important component of avian nutrition. It is necessary for a healthy immune system and proper formation of membranes (including mucous membranes) throughout the body.
Inadequate vitamin A is unfortunately common in avian practice. Birds that are on all seed (or ½ seed or more) diets will likely suffer from deficiency as most seeds and grains contain no vitamin A. It is important to talk to owners about what they are feeding their birds, discussing the importance of balanced pellets and vitamin A rich fruits and vegetables (including carrots, sweet potatoes, mango, papaya, broccoli, and collard greens).

college can literally be free right fucking now as we speak but keeping young people out of loan debt isn’t a priority to the government.
let me repeat that because this information is infuriating.
college can literally be free right fucking now as we speak but keeping young people out of loan debt isn’t a priority to the government.
to break it down in the simplest way possible:
-the government needs roughly $62 billion to make all public colleges free.
-that’s obviously a lot of money, but not to the government, knowing they’re going to spend $716 billion on nuclear weapons.
-the government has no interest in alleviating the college financial crsis – or any other economic related problems, because they don’t care.
this country is sick.

Tangled Healing Incantation Spell
Was on a Disney kick recently and got inspired to create my own witchy replica of Rapunzel’s healing incantation.
AKA? A magical flower spell to bless your hair and ‘heal what has been hurt,’ be that physical or emotional!
NEEDED:
• 1 Hibiscus flower
- Hibiscus tea is more widely accessible, so you can use it just the same!
• Lavender oil
• Hair brush, or your fingers! You can totally do this spell if you don’t have hair or if you want to enchant a wig!
Do whatever you need to do to get ready for a spell. Meditating, casting a circle, talking to your diety for a lil bit. Don’t think about your problem just yet.
When you feel calm and grounded as you can get, start to brush your hair. If you do not have hair, a scalp massage works the same! As you do, imagine your own power. Imagine yourself getting really big and fixing everything in the world with just the snap of your fingers. Put that power into your head.
Dress the Hibiscus flower in lavender oil. Now comes the fun song part! You can sing it out loud or just say it, or do it all in your head! Whichever you choose, hold your tea or flower and sing/speak/think to it, physically trying to link the words of the song with the flower/tea.
Flower gleam and glow
Let your power shine
Make the clock reverse
Bring back what once was mine
Heal what has been hurt
Change the fates design
Save what has been lost
Bring back what once was mine.
* For those opting for the tea method, DO NOT DRINK THE LAVENDER OIL. You can incorporate it in other ways, like diluted with a dispersant and added to face wash or lotion, or rubbed into the scalp. Keep the flower close to where you sleep, and as it begins to rot, bury it on your property. Tea can be consumed or poured into the dirt.
Each morning as you brush your hair, sing the verse to it again to incite flower power.
WAYS TO USE THIS SPELL:
- Rekindling old love
- Healing a recent illness/injury
- Bringing old friends or lovers into your life
WAYS NOT TO USE THIS SPELL:
- Bringing in new friends or lovers
- Healing an illness or disability you have always had (i.e., there must be some state for the spell to return you to)
As always, pratice safely and do not use this spell in place of medical treatment or communication. ❤️ Enjoy!

The Wheel Of The Year
A Quick Introduction to the 8 Pagan Holidays, or Sabbats, of the Year
Dates may Vary due to year, and multiple sources I have found have different dates
Yule (December 20-23): The winter equinox and when days become shorter. People begin to make preparations for the cold months and decorate trees with many cold weather foods to symbolize the continument of life in winter.
Imbolc (Febuary 2nd): “The promise of Spring” this is a time typically when sheep would begin to lactate, meaning they were pregnant. A time of celebration for the coming spring and crops and animals would be blessed. The goddess Bridgid would be honored as she symolizes fertility.
Ostara (March 19-22): The spring equinox and a celebration of the beginning of spring! Some easter traditions come from Ostara.
Beltane (May 1st): The festival of Fire and Mayday, the halfway between spring an summer, the weather is getting warmer for most! A time to be greatful for the gifts of Spring and many celebrate on Beltane Eve with big bonfires and on my first with flower crowns and may poles. Beltane is considered by many to be a holiday where the veil between worlds is very thin.
Litha (June 19-23): The summer solstice! Days are long enough for work and play and many announce engagements during this time and many continue for a full Harvest.
Lughnasadh(August 1st): Symolizing the first harvest and the midway point between summer and autumn. When many get married and celebrate this time with breads and fruits made available by the harvest. A time for gratitude.
Mabon (September 21-24): The autumn Equinox and the holiday we are enjoying right now! A celebration of the harvest and preparations for the winter soon to come. Celebrates abundance and the good reaped from labor.
Samhain (Oct 31- Nov 1): ITS HALLOWEEN! Annnd the witches new year. One of the most important holidays where the veil between worlds is thin. A time to honor loved ones, friends, familiars, and pets who have passed on. A very powerful time where one may focus on guidance, clearance of negative energy, and the beginning of a positive new year.
These are short and simple explanations and I hope I didn’t get anything wrong! Feel free to add info or correct me on any points.
Happy Witching!
