Hey there! Totally random question, but I remember you talking about how you work in vet med. Do you have any suggestions for dog safety while driving? I have a Chihuahua who will do anything to get to my lap while I’m driving, and I’m terrified of getting in an accident and him getting crushed by the airbags. Will crates protect a dog in case of an accident? Or will they get hurt worse by being shaken around?
Sorry for the question out of the blue. Thank you for your time and have a pleasant day!
Sorry I never saw this! Honestly, I’ve been considering turning off anon asks for a while now because the spam outnumbers the real messages at this point, but I’m glad I decided to look through the inbox today and finally found your question.
I do have a suggestion: you can buy a dog seat belt! These are basically short leashes that go around a closed regular seatbelt (I did a quick DuckDuckGo search and it looks like there are also designs that use the headrest as the anchor point) and then the ends attach to your dog’s harness. (You can also get belts with the harness built in, which might be a little more reliable in the event of a crash but are also probably harder to find in very small or very large sizes.) To be clear, I don’t know anything about the safety record of seatbelts vs crates in an accident, but also using either to keep your dog in the back seat will allow you to stay focused on driving which will lower the risk of getting into an accident in the first place.
