Faithful or faithless? So, after the infamous “Ashley Madison” hack how do you feel about the sanctity of marriage? Does it comfort you knowing that 37 million Americans went on a website to cheat on their wives? (Sorry fellas it was mostly you). Are you surprised that cheating is so easy nowadays? I’m disappointed that only 2 towns in Alaska were spared the humiliation of breaking up marriages. That is only because everyone else in the country with a pulse and internet access logged onto Ashley Madison to get freaky. As a child of divorce, I am not blindsighted by this news. In today’s society we can find a mate online, so finding multiple ones is a given. I had hoped the number of cheaters wasn’t so high, but is there a way to rectify society’s image of marriage? Is there anyone left who wants the white picket fence, 1.5 kids and 2 pets? Or is that a ridiculous notion? I started to think was this just something hammered into my head as well. What if I want to travel the world, go on adventures, and have a lot of fun. Is marriage in the cards for me or am I too fiercely independent? I was sitting there wondering what the hell to do with my life…because I’m a 20-something white girl who thinks the universe has “signs” and that astrology matters. I’m sorry to tell you, but Mercury being is retrograde is not why your life life sucks. What a crock of shit!! Everyone’s advice is bullshit. I’m trying to change careers, and just want to run away. So I just sit in my apartment at 2am eating breakfast foods getting bored and watching WeTv. I’m wondering why are people on “Marriage Boot Camp” and the show “Marriage at First Sight” exist now. So, on the one hand they are equating marriage to being in the military, and on the other it is a giant science experiment. Boot Camp makes it seem like you want a drill sergeant yelling at you all the time to take out the trash and water the plants (for the guys) and the women need to cook and clean. I’m sorry is this 1947? And why are they doing “trust falls”? If someone catches you so you don’t fall into a lake that doesn’t mean they love you. It doesn’t mean they won’t go to a bar at 3am and find some strange love. And now they have a trial period with random couples getting marriage on “Marriage at First Sight”. So if you weren’t afraid of commitment before here’s your chance to be scared shitless as you fake marry someone for a month and try not to murder each other! Do these idiots know that they are rats in a cage being messed with? Well, maybe if television made marriage a little less scary I wouldn’t end up alone in 10 years “pleasing myself” at 3am eating French toast with my 18 cats. At least I have my love life sort of figured out right now. Instead I just have a decent human being to just tolerate and watch netflix with..and who isn’t going to murder me. (which is more like reality than reality tv ;) )

You can’t make me into something I’m not. I can’t force you to be what you don’t wanna be. We’re different entities on an escalator of life. How do I know I’m not supposed to be going up when you’re going down? I’m not here to save you, deprive you of your youth or send you on your way never to meet again. I’m my own person, floating in the endless pool of confusion forever searching for answers to questions I’ve been asking forever and might never know the answers to. Maybe one day it’ll make more sense when I’m living in a house full of tapestries, teas and greens. It’ll be peaceful, I will be safe and comforted knowing that you’ll always be there for me even if I don’t always need you because being by my side but not molded to me is the healthiest way for us to be.

I met you last spring sundresses and white wine in the park staring up at the stars, as the icicles were melting off my heart..we ran in the rain to catch the last train. You held the doors open for me and I didn’t want to say goodbye but you said you’d see me next time. We were in the prime of our lives just two kids trying to catch a hold of a dream. In what direction is our country headed? Do we have such small attention spans that 6 second Vine videos is all we can fit into our tiny brains? Apparently the “new normal” consists of shaking our asses for the camera, spending money we don’t have left and right, going to strip clubs, and getting as much plastic surgery as possible to look like Kim Kardashian. There’s even a show on E! called “Botched” which helps people fix their screwed up plastic surgeries they’ve had done in the past. It’s not just twerking that is driving our society into the toilet. It happened way before Miley Cyrus decided to dump her good girl wholesome Disney ways. We think that Iggy Azalea’s “Fancy” is a good song and that she has so much talent. However, it’s been proven recently that the media is actually trying to brainwash you. You will hear this song and think it’s annoying at first, then think it’s catchy and possibly go back to hating it again. It’s a vicious cycle. What these new “breeds” of celebrity have to offer is next to nothing. Besides good looks (whether they be real or fake) there’s nothing else sucking people in. No one seems to care about talent or creativity anymore. Guess who’s in the back room pulling those strings. Most record executives are old rich men. Misogyny and materialism will never die, but it’s up to us to differentiate real talent from garbage. They’ve been doing it for years, but it’s the hours we spend in front of our television and computer screens that has killed so much of our brain cells that we have forgotten how to think for ourselves.  We talk/write in less than 140 characters on Twitter, talk about the lives we pretend we have on Facebook, and put up meaningless quotes and pictures of places through a “filter” on Instagram because living real life is just too damn hard.  There are millions of talented artists out there trying to burst onto the scene, but perhaps they’ll never make it. For example, a singer-songwriter who spends hours upon hours a day writing meaningful lyrics who promotes themselves online will not get signed. But, a girl who "twerks" in a video of a cover song on YouTube will get much more notoriety and possibly a record deal.  We need to be careful who we look up to and aspire to be.  Are we looking up to brainless idiots or intelligent, compassionate individuals? Maybe it’s too late to save all of America, but at least we can save ourselves; one smart person at a time.
