You may have heard of what happened in Lebanon today and if not, basically, there was a big explosion in Beirut that affected many cities, destroyed shops, homes, cars, caused many injuries and deaths. The cause is uncertain.
As a fellow lebanese myself (that also lives there), today was absolutely terrifying, probably the scariest moments of my life. We heard a deafening sound as the floors were shaking. Some of us thought it was an attack, others thought it was an earthquake. As soon as it ended many expected a second one, which luckily never happened.
Hereâs a video of what happened that was sent to me, there are also many others that you can find online.
Windows were broken, doors wrecked, cars flipped over, buildings collapsed, people hit by flying or falling objects, and unfortunately, many didnât make it out alive.
We were one of the lucky ones, our families and friends were all safe and our homes were fine.
Some people couldnât even get out of the crumbling builings, so we saw corpses being pulled out, although some people survived the crash. But wherever we looked, there was blood, poeple were half covered in it, their shirts, pants, hair, everything. And that sight was traumatizing.
We watched the news with elders severely injured, children with blood-spattered shirts and people in pain that couldnât get in the hospitals because they were full.
Some people are missing. Just try to imagine the pain and fear their families and friends are feeling.
Articles about what happened, there are a lot more
Officials expect death toll to rise after huge blast rips through Lebanon's capital.
The explosion took place at the port shortly before 19:00 local time (18:00 CET) with a large cloud of smoke billowing over the city. Eyewit
Not only are we in the middle of a pandemic, but Lebanon is also going through a very serious economical crisis. To give you an example, before, $1 equaled 1 500 lebanese pounds. Nowadays, $1 equals more than 7 000 lebanese pounds. Not to mention that we obviously donât have any dollars at disposition, so yeah weâre fucked.
People are hungry, homeless, unemployed. And even if they are getting paid, itâll be useless since the prices of everything went up because they were affected by the economical fiasco.
Important additional information
Today, I heard my 7 year old cousins scream in fear that they were going to die. I saw my aunt shaking, worried that her children wonât survive. I saw my dad freak out while trying to reassure us when we both knew that we were uncertain about the next minutes of our lives. I heard the panic in the trembling voices of my family and friends as they couldnât believe what had just happened. I thought my loved ones and I were going to die in the next seconds.
Iâm never forgetting those moments and feelings.
I donât think signing petitions will help, i donât even know if the following links will help either, I just know Lebanon and itâs people are desperate for anything because the future of this country is extremely uncertain.

I think donating to the red cross would be the most helpful, so if you are considering it, itâd be great.
There are so many great threads on twitter about what you can do to help, just search help lebanon or something to find them. Also if you can, please donate, and as I said, the lebanese pound is pretty much worthless currently so USD is way more useful to us.

Be careful when you donate to different organizations!!!! Because of the way the lebanese system works, some donations may be considered illegal and canât be accepted! Lebanese Red Cross is one of the legal ones, so if you can donate, do it!
If you know any other organizations that are okay to donate to, please add!!
Right now, Beirut looks like a war zone. The city center is only about a kilometer away from the blast site, and is completely ruined. Buildings as far as 20 kilometers away were heavily damaged.
A lot of people are still missing in the ruins, and families are desperately trying to find them. Lots of people lost their homes and have nowhere to go.
Todayâs aesthetic: keeping the same tab open in your browser for three solid weeks because youâre definitely going to get around to reading and/or acting on whateverâs in it any minute now.
The most important writing lesson I ever learned was not in a screenwriting class, but a fiction class.
This was senior year of college. Most of us had already been accepted into grad school of some sort. We felt powerful, we felt talented, and most of all, we felt artistic.
It was the advanced fiction workshop, and we did an entire round of workshops with everyoneâs best stories, their most advanced work, their most polished pieces. It was very technical and, most of all, very artistic.
IE: They were boring pieces of pretentious crap.
Now the teacher was either a genius OR was tired of our shit, and decided to give us a challenge. Flash fiction, he said. Write something as quickly as possible. Make it stupid. Make it not mean a thing, just be a quick little blast of words.Â
And, of course, we all got stupid. Little one and two pages of prose without the barriers that it must be good. Little flashes of characters, little bits of scenarios.
And they were electric. All of them. So interesting, so vivid, not held back by the need to write important things or artistic things.Â
One sticks in my mind even today. The guys original piece was a thinky, thoughtful piece relating the breaking up of threesomes to volcanoes and uncontrolled eruptions that was just annoying to read. But his flash fiction was this three page bit about a homeless man who stole a truck full of coca cola and had to bribe people to drink the soda so he could return the cans to recycling so he could afford one night with the prostitute he loved.
It was funny, it was heartfelt, and it was so, so, so well written.
And just that one little bit of advice, the write something short and stupid, changed a ton of peopleâs writing styles for the better.
It was amazing. So go. Go write something small. Go write something thatâs not artistic. Go write something stupid. Go have fun.

On Fandoms, Age, and Gender: The Politics of â Putting Away Childish Thingsâ
Weighing in on yet another round of âfan spaces are youth spacesâ (aka âgo home and knit, old ladyâ or âYouâre old enough to be my/someoneâs mom! gross!â )
Consider these thoughts:
Thereâs a whole set of interests and behaviors that you might become interested in as you grow from child to adolescent to young adult and take greater interest in the wider world.
You might like horses, or dolls. Or building models. You might play soccer, or follow baseball every summer and learn about box scores.  You might follow the college football draft, or love a pop band. You might deeply admire a rock band and learn to play the guitar. You might love superheroes and see all their movies. You might love space opera and collect paperback books. Maybe you collect trading cards of your favorite team players â or movie moments. You probably get t-shirts and posters of teams, or media outlets. You might get deeply into a social or political cause.
Those are all expressions of interest in the world, all with associated social aspects, many with associated creative actions.Â
And then you get older. And hereâs the thing about that list. The things on that list that are âfor boys?â  Are also âfor men.â  But the things on that list that are âfor girlsâ or âfor nerds?â Are only âfor children.â Â
Adult men wear brightly colored team clothing and paint their faces without shame.  They join fantasy football leagues and hang out online.  They follow Phish (or continuously talk about how they did when that was a thing). They spend vast sums on tickets to bowl games.  They get excited all over the internet about Geddy Leeâs greatest hits. They spend long afternoons on the golf course, playing very bad golf.
No one tells them to grow upÂ
An adult woman who turns a childhood dollhouse into a beautiful scale model of a real Victorian home is âeccentric.â An adult man who builds a vast HO train layout in his basement is a âtrain enthusiast.â  An adult woman who displays her favorite Bryer horses is âodd,â an adult man with a shelf of signed baseballs is âa collectorâ or even âan investor.âÂ
Adult women making fanart of attractive movie stars is âcreepy,â while adult men decorating their garages with calendar art of scantily-clad very-young women is âjust what guys do.â
Interests and hobbies that were feminine and are taken up by men become acceptable.  When The Beatles were greeted with mobs of fainting teen girls, they were a âboy band.â When young men discovered them, they became Serious Musicians. Â
Over and over, across fields of interest, things that girls like are âtoys and games and childishâ and should be left behind by adults, while things that boys like are âhobbies and sportsâ that are lifetime pastimes. And acceptable âhobbiesâ for adult women?  Most are things that could be coded as household chores, but generations of women have worked to turn into enjoyable pastimes: knitting, sewing, quilting. Home decor. Baking.  Many adult women (myself included) enjoy doing those things in their free time and have elevated them to art forms. But that doesnât change the fact that theyâre rooted in utility, while âmenâs hobbiesâ are, by and large, rooted in leisure.
Look around you and follow the pattern. And then, before you ask âWhy are adult women in fan spaces,â maybe ask âwhy do I feel like adult women donât get to have fun?âÂ
