Pleasure to make your acquaintance. This is my lil safe haven to blog with a bunch of strangers so I don't have to put on a mask for people I have to interact with on the daily.
In truth, I want to make connections with people. I just have somehow compartmentalized my life so my IRL friends and family don't always see what goes through my mind. Anyway, enjoy my nonsense.

Title: Muted Serendipity
Fandom: Ikemen Vampire
âš MUTED SERENDIPITY MASTERLIST âš
Summary:
"Serendipity. Look for something, find something else, and realize that what you've found is more suited to your needs than what you thought you were looking for." - Lawrence Block
Based on the visual novel Ikemen Vampire, this is my take on MC and her interactions with our favorite boys. She's tough, smart, and thrives in her crazy and dangerous lifestyle. But, she's thrown into a world of supernatural and suddenly she's not the smartest or toughest in the room. While she's anxious to get back to her own time, this is also a great opportunity to slow down, something she hasn't done in many years.
Ground Rules
I'm actually pretty loosey goosey when it comes to interactions with me, but let me set some expectations:
I am happily married, so flirting is not gonna happen. Compliments will be acknowledged, but crossing that sexual line will either be ignored or put on blast in this blog.

I've been reading Muted Serendipity, and this newest chapter gave me so many ideas that I couldn't stop thinking about the characters afterward.
One thing I'd absolutely love to see is Claudine becoming more than just a side character. I can already imagine her starting off shy and isolated because of noble expectations, but slowly becoming Dawn's closest friend. Dawn could introduce her to small creative hobbiesâpainting flowers, keeping a private journal, sketching dresses, or even learning sign language just because she genuinely wants to communicate with her naturally instead of relying on translations.
I also think it would be beautiful if Claudine slowly became Dawn's bridge into the female friendships she's been missing. Instead of another romance-focused relationship, we'd get two women supporting each other emotionally while navigating completely different struggles.
Another scene I keep imagining is Le Comte quietly watching Dawn laugh with Claudine from a distance. No dialogue needed just that quiet realization that Dawn has finally found someone she can simply be herself around.
And visually... I would absolutely love to see:
A masquerade illustration featuring Dawn, Le Comte, and Claudine together.
Character reference sheets showing everyone's masks, formal outfits, and symbolic flowers.
A cover inspired by an old French oil painting with moonlit gardens and the ballroom glowing in the background.
Small slice-of-life artwork of Dawn teaching Claudine ASL in the gardens.
Mood boards for each major character showing colors, flowers, jewelry, and personality aesthetics.
Your world feels so alive that it inspires fan art and original character concepts naturally, and that's one of the biggest compliments I can give a story.
If you'd ever like to chat about character ideas, symbolism, or fanfic inspiration, feel free to reach out!
I'd love to hear more about your creative process and the inspiration behind these wonderful characters
Awwww thank you so much! So, Claudine is a legit side character that is introduced in Le Comte's route in Ikemen Vampire, which my story is based on. I honestly cant remember what her basic personality is, but I remember her not vibing with the other young women in high society that much. That being said, yes she is meant to serve as a friendship to Dawn to balance out the mansion dynamics.
As for visual things... im just got good at them XD the concept of visual boards is so interesting but I cant wrap my head around how to make one! Maybe one day I'll try...

Summary: Dawn and Le Comte are taking a break from the ball when someone joins them unexpectedly
Author's Note: IâM BACK!!!!!! I want to apologize for the delay, but this summer has been HECTIC. Nothing bad, in fact itâs been exceedingly smooth and Iâm so grateful for that. But, I got the kiddo at home and I got a new coworker at work and then I took on a whole new project and so⊠itâs been HECTIC. Still, I am so sorry for anyone waiting that this took nearly three months to get an update on. Iâm happy to say that I only have one more chapter (probably) that needs to be actually planned out THEN I have an entire segment drafted up! Just need to polish it and fill any plotholes with cement lol. Thank you everyone for your patience!

Dawn and Le Comte stood overlooking the gardens when a voice sounded behind them.
They turned to find a stout gentleman approaching, dressed in deep navy, a white rabbit mask obscuring his face. Threads of gray wove through both his hair and beard, visible beneath the maskâs edge. At first glance, Dawn found him intrusiveâbut Le Comteâs reaction quickly dispelled the impression.
A broad, genuine smile spread across his lips. âQuel plaisir de vous voir, mon cher duc. (What a pleasure it is to see you, my dear duke.)â
The air between them was immediately light. Though their manners remained impeccably formal, there was no mistaking the ease beneath itâan unmistakable familiarity that marked them as friends rather than mere acquaintances.
As if on cue, Mr. Rabbitâno, Le Duc de Guermantesâbowed towards Dawn.Â
âAnd this beautiful woman,â Le Comte said with a level of reverence that made her cheeks burn beneath her mask, âis Mademoiselle Dawn. She is visiting from America and is in my care until her return home.â
When he raised his body, he smiled. âYou are American, my dear?â His tone was not condescending, but rather intrigued. Maybe even opportunistic. And his smooth transition to English almost shocked Dawn. âWell, then the stars have looked upon me and granted my wish!âÂ
âAnd what do you mean by that, Guermantes?â Le Comteâs mild-mannered face did not match his slightly edged voice.
âFais attention, mon ami (Careful, my friend),â Guermantes warned Le Comte, yet his voice was still playful. âWe are still guests at a masquerade. We may be old friends who can find each other in this sea of disguises with ease, but I still do not want for any unnecessary attention towards my name.â
Le Comte smiled, taking delight in their simple banter. âWell then, âMonsieurâ,â he emphasized, âI await your answer to my question. What do you mean by âyour wishâ has been granted?â
âWell,â Le Duc started, seemingly transitioning to a business-like persona, âyou remember my daughter, yes?âÂ
Le Comte nodded. âI believe her name is Claudine?â
âExcellent memory, as usual,â Le Duc commended. He then sighed, âIn truth, she is of age for courtship yet she refuses to make appearances! Thank goodness she is taking lessons to learn English, in hopes that it opens more opportunities beyond our French borderâŠâ
âAre you concerned that she is not meeting enough suitors?â Le Comte inquired further.Â
Le Duc released an exasperated sigh of frustration. âIf only it were that simple. She has the invitations piling high, so the opportunities are abundant. Yet she refuses to attend!â Suddenly, his eyes focused on Dawn, who had been listening intently but unsure where this tale of woe was going. âI believe,â the man continued, âthat the underlying issue is a sense of loneliness from her peers.â
Dawn's eyebrow raised while Le Comte crossed his arms.Â
âWhat I mean to say is,â he paused, pleading with his eyes, "I believe she could benefit from having a friend. Someone her age, someone with good character, someone that will serve as a good influence for her.â He looked deeply into Dawn's eyes, hoping she could feel his sincerity. âSomeone like you, Mademoiselle.â
Dawn's eyes blinked twice from disbelief.
Le Comte, anticipating the direction of this conversation, stepped in firmly. âWhile my companion is undoubtedly all of those qualities you seek, I am afraid her time here in Paris is short.â
âHow short?â
âOnly a couple more weeks.â
Dawn's head snapped up, not realizing how much (or little) time she had left before she could go home. Where did the time go?
âThen for a couple of weeks I will feel less worried about my daughter.â Le Duc returned his attention to Dawn. âIf you accept, please know you will have my undying gratitude. She is my world and, now that her mother is no longer of this world, I fear I cannot be the person she needs right now.â
She listened to his voice, hearing the softness when he spoke of his daughter, the sadness when he mentioned his departed wife, and the quiet pleading in his chosen words. Then, as she looked deeply in the eye slits of his mask, he held her gaze completely.
Dawn touched Le Comte's elbow and motioned with the lift of her chin to turn, requesting a moment to contemplate with her benefactor. As they did, her hand did not leave his arm. Her thumb slowly rubbed against him and she nodded, signalling that she would accept.Â
He had a point. She glanced at Le Duc from the corner of her eye, noting his body language. Calm, respectful, patient. Not even an inkling of malice. In fact, her entire assessment of Le Duc was that of a rare, genuine man. Her instincts were telling her to leap with faith, and that, in itself, was a rare occurrence.Â
Dawn smiled, then confirmed to Le Comte with a nod that she still wanted to do this.
Together they turned back, but Le Comte carried the responsibility of setting the terms of this temporary friendship. âShe accepts your proposal. However,â his tone firmed, âthere needs to be an understanding between us, as friends.â
Le Duc lifted his chin slightly, but did not speak.
Le Comte continued. âMademoiselle Dawn is a guest under my roof, and her wellbeing is my utmost concern. I value our friendship deeply, but I value her sanctuary more. If Mademoiselle Claudine is to visit my home, it must be understood that whatever you observe remains entirely between those walls. No whispers to the salon, no gossip over cards. Can I rely on your honor as a gentleman to ensure your daughter understands this as well?â
A moment passed, the air thick with tension that wasnât there before. Le Duc seemed to be contemplating the conditions laid upon him by Le Comte, then gave a confirming nod. âYou have my word,â he said.
Dawn released the breath she had been holding unknowingly. Looking up, it seemed Le Comte was, as well.
âThen allow me to explain further.â Le Comte took one last glance at Dawn, ensuring he still had her blessing to speak on her behalf. When the corner of her lips curved upwards slightly, he continued. âMademoiselle possesses an⊠idiosyncrasy of circumstances that we guard with the utmost care. It should not hinder their friendship, however it is her own wish to keep its secrecy.â
Pleased with his explanation, Dawn watched for any micro-expressions that would give Le Duc away before she committed to sharing her secret. His bewilderment was expected, yet he maintained his composure, waiting with an earnest patience that mirrored his love for his daughter.
She had seen enough. With a small step forward, she brought the attention to her and gently brought her hands up, moving with practiced fluidity. âIt is nice to meet you. My name is Dawn,â she signed, making sure she stayed within Le Comteâs proficiency for translation.
âShe says it is nice to meet you,â he said with a knowing look.Â
While she could not observe Le Ducâs expressions behind the mask, she watched as his eyes shifted between her and Le Comte, like he was trying to determine if they were playing a prank on him. When neither of them faltered, only then did he realize how serious they were.
And how flawless their deception was to every socialite in the ballroom.
Le Duc began to laugh heartily, his hand even reaching for his stomach to hold. âMon Dieu (My goodness)! I could never have guessed this was the truth behind your partnership!âÂ
Dawn smiled, pleased that this was, by far, the best outcome to sharing her secret with anyone.Â
Suddenly, her hands were in Le Ducâs as he held them with care and looked deep into her eyes. âMademoiselle, your secret is safe with us. My daughter and I will not taint the trust you have bestowed upon us. I swear on my family name.â He paused, then spoke with a heavy voice. âThank you for your friendship.â
And with that, he released her hands and then bowed. Before leaving, he turned to Le Comte. âMon ami (My friend), choose a day of your liking.I will even bring a bottle of wine from my personal collection as a gift.â
âI was going to demand that as compensation, but at least we have an understanding,â Le Comte joked.
No more words were needed between the two of them. Le Duc turned and disappeared through the French Doors and into the light of the ballroom.
Dawn opened her hand fully and tapped her thumb against the middle of her chest. âIt is fine,â she signed with a smile and a twinkle in her eyes.Â
He did not want to argue with her, especially while she had no means to communicate beyond the limited sign language he could understand. Still, this was a matter to be discussed in more detail later.
Dawn took in a deep breath, the scent of the garden calming her nerves once again. She was not nervous about the upcoming meeting with this Claudine girl. Actually, she was elated to be meeting with someone that wasnât a male.
No, the issue was the growing number of eyes crowding the windows and doorway, now that she and Le Comte were once again alone. It seemed that Le Ducâs presence had deterred quite a few people from approaching them, to which her gratitude for his inclusion in their little circle grew even more.
âIt seems we have garnered attention yet again,â Le Comte commented, following her gaze. He took a step towards her, closing the space between their bodies and, hopefully, signalling to every onlooker that they were still sharing a private moment together and to not approach. âAre you ready to go back in? Or should we take our leave?â His voice was barely above a whisper, sending a chill down her spine.
Part of her wanted to leave, finding the whole atmosphere stuffy and over-the-top. But, the other part of her felt like the night was not complete, like there was more it could offer. She accepted being his companion for the night to increase his standing in society, and so far he only managed to ruffle some feathers and promise a girlâs day for her and Le Ducâs daughter.Â
Hardly a success.
A smirk appeared on her lips before she confirmed her answer with a playful glint in her eyes.
Le Comte understood that look immediately. It was probably one of her most admirable yet troublesome qualities: the need to push forward, regardless of any obstacles or challenges that lay ahead. He sighed, yet accepted her decision to join the party once more.
Without warning, Le Comteâs hand was on the small of her back, pulling her close to his body. His other hand lifted her chin up so they were truly face to face. He looked down at her, taking in her wide, blue eyes that shone brighter through her black, lace mask than the moon did in the night sky. Her lips parted slightly, and he felt a gentle rush of warmth spreading from her neck to her cheeks beneath his fingers that touched her skin.Â
Before Dawnâs brain could fully process the warning, Le Comte leaned down. He didnât kiss her hand. He didnât bow. Instead, he pressed his lips softly against her cheek, just below the edge of her lace mask.
It was a slow, lingering touchânot desperate, but proprietary. A gesture so agonizingly intimate that Dawn felt the collective gasp of onlookers practically vibrate through the glass windows behind them. She knew that society in this era had its rules: show restraint, modesty, and distance.
Le Comte had just shattered all three with effortless grace.
Her heart did a violent, erratic flutter against her ribs. Underneath the mask, her face burned crimson. But, she forced herself to not pull away, holding his gaze as he slowly drew back. She was met with a smirkâfaint and utterly wickedâplayed at the corner of his lips as he took in her flustered expression.Â
âThere,â Le Comte whispered, his fingers trailing down her arm to gently take her hand once more, looping it securely around his elbow. âNow every vulture in that ballroom knows exactly who you belong with tonight. They will think twice before attempting to isolate or patronize you.â
Dawnâs mouth was left agape as she realized what he had done. Her eyes darted back towards the French doors and she saw the shift. The lingering crowds had dispersed slightly while whispers were fanning out like wildfire through the ballroom. And yet, no one dared to step onto the terrace.Â
Le Comte leaned in once more, his golden eyes gleaming with dark amusement beneath his cat maskâbecoming more fitting with every devious actâas his voice sent chills through her body again. âHowever,â he added softly, âsociety is full of foolish men driven by pride. Should anyone prove braveâor stupidâenough to ignore my public claim and corner youâŠâ He leaned just far enough to look her in the eye, his gaze dropping briefly to the subtle bulge of her bustle where her butterfly lay hidden.â...you have my full permission to show them that you are more than a prized possession.â
A quiet, breathless huff of laughter escaped Dawn. The absurdity of the refined aristocrat giving her carte blanche to stab obnoxious nobles was the exact brand of dark humor she needed to ground herself.
Her lips curved into a sharp, confident smirk beneath her mask while she brought her hand near her forehead and touched the tip of her index finger to the top of her head. âI understand,â she signed with a mischievous nod.
I am feeling a bit lost. A bit too much. A bit too little. A bit under-appreciated. A bit over-dramatic. A bit manic. A bit depressed. A bit useless. A bit over-cautious.
Not enough to raise red flags, but just enough where I dont feel like myself.
And while nothing is wildly outside my norm, all of it is compiling. All of it is swaying me in multiple directions so I never feel grounded and im just trying to keep my footing.
Who am I, at this rate? Am I nice or mean? Am I being honest or condescending? Am I a good friend or a bad one? Should I be trusted or not?
I think im gonna hole up for a while. I haven't been on Tumblr in a while bc too much is going on, and I think its really starting to show. Maybe when my son goes back to his dad will things slow down. Maybe when my new hire feels more confident in her skills will I have my quiet time at work again.
Maybe I need to calm down with all the things I'm juggling before I feel better.

my thoughts about Caine's model lacking many essential facial features (as if he was never intended to show any emotions) and yet him being literally the most expressive character in the circus despite everything.
me being low-key obsessed with the implications episode 7 left us with. Players questioning everything they've been told and Caine being in the center of it all.
I want them all to be healed and happy, little guy absolutely included, but man the situation is rough, and the odds are against us
(Also please ignore the fact that I've messed up while writing my own name in the first couple of frames hah, am tireddd)
WELCOME TO THE IKEMEN VAMPIRE 7TH ANNIVERSARY ELECTION
Starting on Wednesday at 6 am EST I will be posting links to a google form where you can vote for any combination of guys you would like.
You can give all your votes to one guy, or you can divide it up among the 17.
You get 15 votes a day for 7 days. Each day there will be a new link for you to be able to vote and the link to the previous day will be disabled. Think of it as one of those awards shows where you can vote once a day for multiple days
What will I be doing with these results? They will be going into the anniversary zine that me and many others are working on. If all goes well the top three guys will have bonus art in the zine as well.
If this is your first time hearing about this, then let me explain.
August 1st we will be releasing a zine in celebration mourning of what would have been the 7th anniversary. It will include art and fics from people int he fandom and each guy will be getting at least one piece of media to make sure everyone is loved and everyone gets something for their fave. After the voting is over, I will be posting little intros of everyone who is involved.
I know I said I'd have more chapters or whatever when I got back from New Zealand, but so much has been happening. Not to mention I feel so validated knowing the reason I struggle with focus and I hop between hobbies is because of a legitimate condition.
Anyway, I got my family here with me for a week and then my son is staying with me for the next six weeks. I will be up to my ears in multitasking and basically remembering how to be a parent.
Oh, the joys of being the visiting parent... God, my anxiety just skyrocketed typing that.
Anyway, no ETA on the next chapter. I am trying, but I'm not guaranteeing anything.

So, I think Tiktok heard me talking about how my assessment went.
I went to a psychiatrist yesterday morning and it was a little nerve-wracking but I am glad I went. LEGIT happy I was validated in how I felt with my focus issues. Not happy he confirmed I was a victim of the 90s...
Anyway, I saw this video and while it is not exactly how my own assessment went... DAMN I FEEL ATTACKED AND VALIDATED ALL AT THE SAME TIME.
Here is how I felt watching this video:
1 - I was not late bc I get very nervous in new buildings so I got there an hour early...
2 - I ALMOST forgot to do the questionnaires. I did them before going into the building.
3 - I constantly forget where my sunglasses are, so I have one pair in my car, one pair in my husband's truck, and three pairs somewhere in the house. And I opt to not wear sunglasses bc that requires me to find them.
4 - I have water on my desk. It sits there for hours untouched.
5 - I DO have birthday reminders in my calendar. The only ones that dont need reminders are my own family.
6 - I start hobbies all the time. Why do you think I crochet, knit, cross stitch, bake, and play video games? I go through phases of what im working on.
7 - I dont have hobbies outside, but in my old city with ny ex, we were raking leaves and I left the bag of leaves under our deck for a whole year bc j forgot. And then when I finally said id move it, a whole hornets nest was there. Had to hire professionals.
8 - I CANNOT KEEP MY TAMAGOTCHI ALIVE
9 - I have lots of ideas, like for my story, that i forget to add. All the time.
10 - I haven't sent a thank you card since my first marriage in 2016. And even then im sure I forgot a lot of people.

The sun was barely up, casting only a grayish tint across the sky as night gave way to day. It was a peaceful morning for sure, with only a couple coaches and carriages traversing Paris before it truly woke up. One particular coach gently rocked its inhabitants as the wheels rattled over cobblestone.
Inside the coach, Leonardo sat beside Dawn with his hands loosely folded in his lap. Dawn looked out the small window, but he could tell her eyelids were heavy, each blink slower than the last.Â
It made sense, considering he knocked on her door at an ungodly hour to wake her up and urged her to get dressed with haste. He was actually impressed how quickly she came out of her room. She dressed practicallyâas he expected her toâin an ivory blouse tucked into a cinnamon brown skirt, brought together with a thick belt that made him think of the color of cognac. In preparation for a chilly morning, she covered her shoulders with a charcoal cloak.
As for her hair, she was in the middle of plaiting it with deft fingers behind her head when she exited her room. A copper-toned ribbon was held between her teeth until she had weaved her hair past the nape of her neck. Once she secured her hair near the bottom of her hairline, she finished by untangling the remaining length into a soft ponytail.
Now that they were in their coach heading to their destination, it seemed Dawn's sleepiness was catching back up to her. Only minutes after they began their journey did Leonardo feel the weight of her head lean against his shoulder. He looked down and saw she had completely succumbed to slumber, her cloak tightly wrapped around her like a blanket.Â
All he could do was release a quiet breath through his nose, but smile softly at how peaceful she looked. It was going to be about 20 more minutes before their arrival, so he would let her rest. Leo kept still as to not jostle her awake, but made sure his compagna provvisoria remained comfortable for the ride to the market.
*~*~*
âCara mia.â
Dawn's eyes began to move, slowly adjusting to the light creeping through the curtain of the coach. Her nose scrunched and her eyes squinted, her face and body slowly coming to life. It took her a moment to regain a sense of her location, to remember that Leo had abruptly woken her before the sun was even considering the beginning of the day and rushed them into a coach.Â
It seemed she had drifted asleep, but the cat nap did her some good. She felt more refreshed than agitated, and the coach was surprisingly comfortable.Â
⊠I am not leaning against the coach.
Her head had not moved yet, but her eyes were adjusting exceedingly fast. No, she was not leaning against the coach. She was leaning against something warm, solid⊠breathing.
Sure enough, the fabric she was feeling was Leo's overcoat, its wine-colored sleeve cushioning her cheek against his arm. As she slowly looked up, she was met with his warm eyes of gold. His long, dark ash-brown bangs fell to the front of his face, somehow making his already brilliant eyes shine brighter.
Dawn slowly raised herself upright. She felt a yawn coming as she clumsily rubbed her eyes awake with the base of her palms. I can't believe I fell asleep, she thought to herself. She shook the thought away before looking up again. Leo barely moved at all. He simply sat patiently, waiting for her.
Awkwardly, she waved hello.
Leo let out a small laugh, finding her good morning gesture endearing, if not comical. âCome,â he said, finally breaking their silence, âwe are here.â
He opened the door and exited, then held out his hand for her to take. She gave herself a moment to compose herself, breathing in deeply and remembering they were on a âdateâ, before smiling and accepting his hand.
Outside, the morning light was much brighter, warmer. There was a golden glow enveloping everything around her. She could see all of the vendors setting up their stalls, the sounds becoming a natural white noise.Â
But the smell. Oh God, the smell. It was the warmest, sweetest scent that filled her nostrils. She couldn't tell where it was coming from. Maybe it was coming from multiple places. Maybe it was wafting on the breeze that tussled the loose strands of her hair that did not want to stay in her braid.
It didn't matter. It smelled absolutely divine. She needed to find the source.
Leo led Dawn down the street, nestling her comfortably into the crook of his elbow as they walked. She noticed how Leo took smaller, slower steps to match her pace, carefully guiding her around the passing people and the occasional uneven stone. Somehow, he made it feel as though they were in their own small bubble, untouched by the bustle of Paris waking around them.
Her nose lifted into the air, realizing the scents she had wanted to find were becoming stronger. As she looked around, she saw a bakery with its door open, and Leo was walking her straight to it.Â
Inside, there was only one other customer being helped by an older woman. This woman was short, just an inch taller than Dawn was, with a plump figure but strength and energy abundant in how she carried herself. She had her gray hair pulled back into a bun with a sweet, welcoming smile as she spoke to the customer. Even her wrinkles had a way of smiling when she did.
Once she saw them come in, she flashed with a wide grin. âBonjour et bienvenue (Good morning and welcome!)â Her greeting was so warm and energetic.
âBonjour, Odette (Good morning, Odette),â Leonardo responded. It sounded like he was well acquainted with the shopkeeper.
And just as quickly, she turned her attention to Dawn. âQuelle chance tu as! (You lucky girl!)â she commented. All Dawn could do was smile in bewilderment, not sure what was going on. But, when she glanced at Leo for some context, he just smiled and noddedâutterly unhelpfulâlike she was just supposed to accept this without question.Â
Is she supposed to be this handsy with someone she just met?
âOdette,â Leonardo chuckled, âJe pense que vous risquez de submerger mon compagnon par votre gentillesse. (I think you may be overwhelming my companion with your kindness.)â
The older woman took one last look at Dawn, seeing the forced smile that was too kind to say âplease stopâ, then stepping back some. Still, she held that same, sweet, genuine expression of happiness. âJe vous prie de m'excuser, ma chĂšre. Maintenant (My apologies, dear. Now),â she said, addressing them both, âque puis-je vous servir (what can I get for you two?)â
Leo caught Dawn's attention and tilted his head towards the display of foods and pastries. They had a display case filled with croissants, eclairs, tarts, buns, and slices of breads ranging from plain to fruity to chocolate-infused. The warmth in the bakery already let Dawn know they were fresh from the ovenâthe best time to bite into a treat.
Leonardo's voice pulled her out of her trance to see him holding a small ceramic cup filled with steaming coffee. She graciously accepted, tapping her chin and pulling her hand away, thanking him. As she took a sip, the subtle bitterness of the coffee jolted her senses awake but the warmth as it traveled down her throat to her stomach eased her into a comforting bliss.Â
She felt his hand press gently on the small of her back, urging her forward a step. Leo leaned toward her ear and whispered, âPick whatever you like,â enticing her to choose freely. She looked up, asking only with her eyes if he was serious. Of course, all he did was direct her attention to the pastries again with a nudge of his head.Â
Her eyes bounced back and forth multiple times. Fruity? Chocolatey? Classic? Which one?!
Leonardo watched her eyes moveâtoo quickly, too carefully. Not the look of someone deciding what they wanted, but of someone measuring, weighing, editing herself down.
At last, she lifted a hand and pointed. Not at the tarts. Not at the buns. She pointed to one of the plain croissants.
Leonardo blinked once. Of all the things in the caseâof all the color and sugar and fruit that had clearly held her captive only moments agoâthat was what she chose?
Odette, feeling the slight tension between them, followed his gaze then looked back at Dawn. She didnât comment.
Leonardoâs mouth twitched, thoughtful rather than amused. He nodded once. âUn croissant (One croissant),â he said calmly.
Odette reached for it.
âEt une tarte aux framboises et aux amandes. (And one raspberry almond tart),â Leonardo added just as easily.
Odetteâs brows liftedâjust slightlyâbut she complied, setting the tart beside the croissant.
Dawnâs eyes widened. She shook her head quickly, lifting her hand and signing, âNo.â
Leonardo paid no mind to her plea. âEt la tarte aux pommes cuite au four (And the baked apple tart),â he continued.
Odette glanced between them now, understanding dawning in her eyes. She made eye contact with Leonardo before placing the tart down with deliberate care.
Dawn tugged lightly at Leonardoâs sleeve, her movements flustered. She pointed again to the croissant, insistently this time.
Only then did Leonardo turn to her. He leaned inânot touching, not crowdingâbut close enough that his voice was meant only for her. His mouth brushed near her ear, his tone low, steady. âI see what you are doing, cara mia,â he murmured. âYouâre holding back because you donât wish to be a burden.â
He paused, just long enough for that truth to land.
âI brought you here because I want to know what you like,â he continued softly. âNot what you think is acceptable.â He straightened, giving her space again, and gestured gently toward the display. âShow me what you really want.â
I do not normally do commissioned art. I am a poor person in the sense that I cannot be trusted with money, but I DO NOT REGRET having @danaesalcido02 do a scene from this chapter!!!!
We started chatting LONG AGO and it filled me with joy that truly wanted to know more about Muted Serendipity and the characters and plots I have planned for our dear Dawn. I can even say she is a friend now!
As an artist, she is detailed. She asked questions and sent over progress pictures to make sure I liked the direction it was going. 100% approve!
Ok, without further ado, lemme share her amazing artwork!
LOOK AT HOW CUTE THEY ARE!
Literally how I imagined it when I wrote this chapter...
