Avatar: The Last Airbender premiered on this day sixteen years ago!

The third standalone ATLA comic Suki, Alone is coming in June!

Following Katara and the Pirate’s Silver and Toph Beifong’s Metalbending Academy, we now have the third solo graphic novel to complete this trio with the theme of all featuring female main characters.

There currently isn’t a description available (this info comes from a very early product listing), but based on the cover it’s clear that this comic is set when Suki was imprisoned at the Boiling Rock. This places it between Book Two: Earth, Chapter Sixteen: Appa’s Lost Days, in which the Kyoshi warriors fought Azula, and Book Three: Fire, Chapter Fourteen: The Boiling Rock Part One, in which Sokka and Zuko discover Suki at the titular Boiling Rock prison.

This makes it like the Katara solo comic, which is set also set during the events of the show. This trio of solo standalone comics replaces the previous model of main story trilogies (The Promise, The Search, The Rift, Smoke and Shadow, North and South, and Imbalance). It’s likely that these three female-focused standlone comics will be bundled into a library edition like the trilogies, so it appears that they’re still doing the stories in threes even if they’re not trilogies anymore. That makes me wonder what the theme of the next three will be!

As for the Korra comics, they’re continuing with main story trilogies.

Also exciting is that Avatar Kyoshi is clearly a factor!

CEO says Avatar franchise has potential for new original series on Paramount+, the new streaming service launching next year to compete with Netflix, Disney+, and HBO Max

The CEO of ViacomCBS, the media conglomerate that owns Nickelodeon, specifically mentioned Avatar in a recent earnings call while discussing the upcoming launch of Paramount+:

“In terms of Paramount Plus, we have announced some new entertainment franchises that we’re bringing to Plus, the Godfather, SpongeBob, the Criminal Minds spinout. But, under the covers, our preview launch showed that there’s other franchises that work too that have potential, things like MTV’s reality show, The Challenge; things like Nick’s animated library series, Avatar, and all this is really the tip of the iceberg. And we do have other franchises in the Company. So, you can safely assume that upcoming announcements will include new original variants of them for Paramount Plus. We will of course have some non-franchise-based new originals to keep things fresh. But, I’m not going to get ahead of things and reveal them until we get much closer to launch.”

To be clear, there have been no announcements of any sort yet, but the CEO calling out Avatar by name like that is a pretty big deal. Gears are turning, and it’s inevitable that something will be coming.

Korra will return in a new graphic novel trilogy
