as usual, I am not the most coherent after watching an episode of anything, but tempest is making me want to blog again, which is really something. On the one hand, I really wanna talk about Junik leaving everything to Munju, and what that represents aside from the obvious, but I like that JSK continues to tackle class in a way that doesn't exempt rich women from their wrongdoings. That's why none of them "deserve" that money, because they are part of the problem as much as Junik was, in a way. But alas, I'm here to talk about Munju and Sanho, because Jesus Christ, I'm so enthralled by their dynamic, by the way they communicate and trust (yes, Munju, trust) each other. I think in episode 5 it’s more than clear that she opted out of happiness after she lost her baby, and maybe that's why she distanced herself so much. and being in that vulnerable state too!, that's why Junik found himself a mistress, because that’s how he coped. It would be easy to blame him for being the worst, which he is, but the issue is that Munju can't talk to him.
Evil MIL keeps telling Munju she has to show her vulnerability to the people, in a way saying this is how she'll win their hearts, but Munju isn't one to trust easily, and vulnerability and trust walk side by side. So, of course she's lying to herself when she says she doesn't trust Sanho. Maybe when she's being rational about it, she can see that he is shady, but he is truly the only person in this world to whom she has shown her vulnerabilities.
And it's so telling, so interesting, that instead of only comforting her, he says he wants to make her dangerous! He's trying to keep her safe in all the ways he knows, but he isn’t trying to domesticate her, not like Junik did, affiliating himself with a party she never liked and pretending to believe in a God she doesn’t think is real. Even that necklace, which was his mistress' design (oof), is, in some way, a form of ownership.
I could go back to class/marriage and the "debt" she felt towards him for giving her her homeland, the chance of living her dream. Imagine the betrayal, finding out he was going to do it himself (even if he never knew about it). Add to that losing a baby, a baby boy!, in such a horrendous family, and it’s no wonder she punished herself by being far away, by running and running, because to keep people close is to lose them.
So, Sanho understands what it’s like to not have a place, to be on his own, to depend only on oneself. It comes down to the basics: he sees her for who she is, he adores the person Munju is, he wants to protect her, and he wants her to be someone people are afraid of hurting. He teaches her how to shoot, he trusts his gun in her hands, he offers solace when everything is chaos, and he allows her to have a good moment before the storm hits.
And Munju realizes it’s the first time in a decade she wants to be happy, because she finally found someone who can reach her, who understands her language, and loves her for it.
So yeah. I'm doing fine. I think.
