Politics. What is politics? Politics is about distribution. In the end, politics is all about who we obtain from and who we distribute it to. It's about taking from one to give to the other. Who have you been robbing it from and who have you been feeding with it?
Six Flying Dragons ā ģ”ė£”ģ“ ėė„“ģ¤ ā 2015
Haven't seen anyone fancasting for Peter Wimsey for a while. What's up with that?
Thought about it for two minutes so I'm sorry for the collateral damage it is causing and going to cause but corporatised AI is an existential threat to writing and fandom, so people calling it out when they encounter it is good, actually. The next AO3, if it appears, *will* have a built-in feature to inform readers of what was generated by an LLM and what wasn't.
The real individual problem for writers, I believe, is that the reign of terror approach to calling out and cancelling authors isn't sincere, because it rarely is. A substantial number if not the majority of your cancellers are people who don't give a shit about using LLMs themselves and who will happily read 45000 words posted every two days of synthetic blorbo-fucking because they don't know and can't tell the difference between human patterns of production and plagiarised shit; their incentive to retweet an accusation of plagiarism is the fun of joining a riot. That is a social issue and fandom, just like and even more than other kinds of society online, is vulnerable to it.
LLMs will shrink fandoms. There is no way around this. We have to write like our lives depend on it, write to bring joy to strangers, and write to sow the seeds of a future we are not going to live to see.
tagged by @radialarch thank you! This is such a funny-weird thing for me because I've basically chosen the tiniest fandoms to write in most of the time, and even if the fandom is bigger, I almost always end up choosing the rare pair that nobody is interested in and then inventing the tag/ writing most of the fics in it or even the only fic for the pairing. So I'm nearly always writing for myself and maybe 2 other people, tops. Be the light you want to see in the world etc. I haven't been writing/ publishing as long as you have, and I'm not a very prolific writer either, so just gonna dedicate this to my one-hit wonders mostly!
The first ever fic I posted (13/06/2017) to AO3 was in the Black Sails fandom and it is still one of my faves. In 2018, Netflix got me into my first ever cdrama, 70 episodes of Chen Kun in the best wig ever, incomprehensible plot choices and tears-The Rise of Phoenixes, and my first fic in that fandom was A Place in the World (01/12/2018) but my fave and maybe the fic I've worked the hardest at in my entire life is Calculations of the Heart, (26/06/2019) a 100k epic for a pairing that maybe 5 people were interested in? I also wrote 10 of the 12 fics for the pairing over a year and a half, god, it was like having coke in my veins or something. Ffwd to 2020, the pandemic and the worst show in the world (The King: Eternal Monarch) hit me at the same time. First fic which I actually actively dislike askjadskjdhasdha but remains my most popular solo effort in that fandom- I have no idea why- but my favourite is maybe Destiny's Child mostly because I had such a blast writing it in 2 days, after spending 3 months writing a different fic. ps. TKEM also brought my two darlings @elderflowergin and @haraxvati into my life so I cannot complain about that show toooooo much
I've spent the last 3 years mostly writing for a pairing that exists only in discord chat lol but I seem to have fallen into the fandom-du-jour unexpectedly and wrote my first fic in the Heated Rivalry fandom, Tuesday's Child last December, and I've only written another two, but it's too few to have a fave, maybe? My writing feels rusty to myself, and I know nothing about sports so everything is very difficult ughhhhh idek, but I quite enjoyed writing Genghis Khan which I posted two days ago lol.
Ok, time for my one-hit wonders- a few of the ones where I've invented the ship tag and it's the ONLY fic for that tag in the fandom, and literally written for nobody else but me, so I love them, sue me.

reblog to give prev a fUCKING BREAK in 2026
Words by Andrea Gibson
if cis people are so great then why donāt they have a siberian orchestraĀ
random PSA, I know a lot of people use duckduckgo as a Google alternative search engine, but it always kind of annoyed me when I was using it because it felt like No Name Brand Google
I have switched to using Startpage.com and vastly prefer it. for one thing, instead of displaying an "AI summary" at the top of the search results (unless you turn it off, yes I know), it displays the first paragraph of the Wikipedia article, with link, whenever it finds one that's relevant.
also a waaayyyyy better sense of design than duckduckgo
also private, European based, least annoying search I've used lately (RIP old "don't be evil" Google)
Keeping a list of Google alternatives just in caseā¦
i have one of those, scraped from multiple different rec posts:
Search Engines
Infinity Search is an alternative search engine with a special focus on privacy
DuckDuckGo is a popular search engine for those who value their privacy and are put off by the thought of their every query being tracked and logged. Uses bangs, ![site] for in-page search (sells your data to microsoft and draws from fucking bing)
WolframAlpha is a privately owned search engine that allows you to ācompute expert-level answers using Wolframās breakthrough algorithms, knowledgebase, and AI technology.ā A data search engine.
Boardreader is a search engine for forums and message boards. It allows you to search forums and then filter down results by date and language.
Based in France, Qwant is a privacy-based search engine that wonāt record your searches or use your personal details for advertising. Uses ā&ā as a bang search.
Another privacy-based search engine is Search Encrypt, which uses local encryption to ensure that usersā identifiable information cannot be tracked. Metasearch across multiple engines.Ā
Offering unbiased results from several sources, SearX is a metasearch engine that aims to present a free, decentralized view of the internet. Can be self-hosted.Ā
Gibiruās tagline is āUnfiltered private searchā and thatās exactly what it offers. Requires AnonymoX Firefox add-on for privacy.Ā
Disconnect allows you to conduct anonymous searches through a search engine of your choice.
Swisscows provides fully encrypted searches to protect your privacy and security. Built-in violence/porn filter cannot be overridden.Ā
MetaGer offers āPrivacy Protected Search & Findā through its anonymised search. A plugin will allow it to be made a default.
Gigablast is a private search engine that indexes millions of websites and servers real-time information without tracking your data, keeping you hidden from marketers and spammers. Variety of filtration and refinement options for searching.Ā
Oscobo is a search engine that protects your privacy while you search the web. By not using any third-party tools or scripts, your data is protected from hacking and misuse. Has a Chrome extension to allow use in toolbar.Ā
https://search.marginalia.nu/ an independent DIY search engine that focuses on non-commercial content, and attempts to show you sites you perhaps weren't aware of in favor of the sort of sites you probably already knew existed. Use old-school searching rather than query-based for the best results.Ā
https://www.mojeek.com/Ā
https://wiby.me/ - Itās goal is to index as many personalized websites as possible, and NOT commercial sites.Ā
https://4get.ca/ it works a lot like SearX, but honestly better. It doesnāt have its own index, but pulls from many others. I think itās the best for research, since it allows you to search for answers from different indexes, is easy to configure, add free, and avoids censorship as much as it can.
https://www.searchenginemap.com/ for more on how search engines relate to each other.
https://yep.com/ is a crawler
https://www.etools.ch/ retrieves from Google, Mojeek, Bing, and Yandex, like Searx
https://www.dogpile.com/Ā
https://searxng.org/ (next gen Searx)
https://luxxle.com/ - possibly conservative?
https://presearch.com/ - good for academic?
https://kagi.com/smallweb - free/randomised Kagi.
Other Searchers
www.refseek.com - Academic Resource Search. More than a billion sources: encyclopedia, monographies, magazines.
www.worldcat.org - a search for the contents of 20 thousand worldwide libraries. Find out where lies the nearest rare book you need.
https://link.springer.com - access to more than 10 million scientific documents: books, articles, research protocols.
