I love the friendship between Henderson and Harrington. I was thinking about this topic a bit, I need to throw my thoughts somewhere, so just a short text if you're interested in my opinion about these two
I really like their 'you die, I die' agreement. I see it less as sentimental and more as a promise of responsibility. In Season 3, Steve simply agreed to Henderson's words, thereby giving Dustin the opportunity to take responsibility for his own actions and acknowledging that he views Dustin as an equal. I think this partly gave Henderson confidence, since he was the one taking responsibility for Steve for the next half-season. In the book, 'The Dustin Experiment,' Steve distances himself, while for Dustin, Steve is still the first person Henderson will share secrets with and ask for advice. 'Of course, I trust him. That's why I'm here, because I need his opinion just as badly as I needed my mother's opinion.' But Dustin still asks Steve to be a friend, not a mentor, to support, not to advise. "I came over here so you could make me feel better, not nag me." Starting in season four, their older/younger brother connection gradually fades. Dustin has his own things to do, Steve distances himself to avoid looking foolish and jealous. Dustin misses communication, and resentments and omissions accumulate. In season five, it's as if the connection has been lost; they no longer know each other, and if they show any interest in each other, it's reduced to irritated banter. By the end of the season, Dustin admits to himself and Steve the true reason for his jerkish behavior: he's afraid for Steve. While Dustin once admired Steve's risk-taking and courage, it now frightens him. It no longer seems 'cool' but 'selfish' and 'irresponsible.' I interpret the 'you die, I die' scene before the final battle as a promise of responsibility, like 'I promise not to do anything stupid, I remember how important I am to you.' and this time, the phrase works both ways, with Steve taking responsibility first. They show each other that they're willing to put their pride aside and no longer turn a blind eye to each other's feelings.
