Vivian has been her best friend since she was six. Skye feels like they’ve been growing apart lately and is scared of losing her oldest friend, so she’s determined to stay close, whatever that takes.

Bellamy has, from outside appearances, the friendship that Skye wishes she had with Vivian. Skye is inspired by Bellamy’s depth and maturity and wants to be closer, but feels like Bellamy views her as a little kid.

Alden is Skye’s one proof that adulthood doesn’t have to be what she fears it is. She deeply admires the way he balances silly playfulness and responsibility and has a puppy crush on him.

✽ Backstory 

Skye met Vivian at a Thanksgiving dinner event when she was six. She crawled under a table draped in tablecloth to spy on the adults and was surprised to find another girl already under there, hiding from the entire gathering. The two were a classic case of “introvert gets adopted by extrovert” and quickly became fast friends. 

Skye’s own childhood was rather uneventful, but she did everything she could for Vivian when hers started falling apart. Skye led her family in supporting Vivian and Lillie-Rose as much as possible when Vivian's dad left, and Vivian spent so many nights sleeping over at Skye’s house that year that Skye considered Vivian the older sister she’d always wanted. She felt helpless about the situation, but learned that she was very good at distracting her friend by making her laugh, so she leaned into that.

When Vivian met Bellamy and Alden, Skye initially battled fears of being abandoned or forgotten in favor of her new, “better” friends, and she does still struggle with this a little bit. Bellamy was the kind of friend Skye had always wished she could be: thoughtful, deep, understanding, always seeming to know exactly what to do. However, Alden always made a point to include her in their hangouts, and soon most of the insecurities leveled out and the four became a steadfast group.

Then, somewhere around when Skye was in seventh or eighth grade, Vivian started retreating. Skye didn’t notice it at first, or chalked it up to any one of the million bad things going around in Vivian’s head all the time. The only thing that ever stuck out to her was the last time one of their hangouts ever felt mostly normal, when Skye was fourteen and Vivian was seventeen, in which Vivian elusively said something about “finally finding something that helps.” It took Skye a long time to figure out what that comment had meant. When she did, she doubled down on her “no judgement” mindset, afraid that Vivian would stop being friends with her if she reacted negatively. She lacked an understanding of the situation, which resulted in her unintentionally enabling Vivian’s drinking.

Once Vivian moved out, Skye lost a lot more contact with her, and the entire friend group adopted an evasive way of talking to Skye, which frustrated her a lot and made her feel ostracized. She’s a little afraid her friends are treating her differently because they're adults and see her as a little kid now that they have their own apartments and everything. But she senses they're hiding something serious, suspects it has to do with the fact that Vivian drinks, and is hurt that they don’t think she’s mature enough to know about it. She continues to play the role of the unconditional supporter, hoping that if they see how much she cares no matter what happens, they’ll let her in on what’s going on.
