I find it calming to search for the moon with my telescope.  My heart races as I focus my camera and try to steady my hands in the hopes of capturing an image that will allow others will see the mystifying beauty that begets so much happiness, and yet, so much wonder to my mind.

I turned away to look back at my screen but it was only another couple moments before I heard his voice again.  He made polite short but genuine talk about what I was working on.  He was engaged, he was listening, he was responding, heck, he was in the library at 8:30 am.  I liked that.  I was happy to have met him on a day I was all done up and feeling confident.  I felt a genuine connection because I felt worthy of his smile.  I respected and liked him even more when he didn't ask for my number when I said I had to go, not too long after our conversation had started.  For some reason I felt myself momentarily disappointed he didn't, but deep down I already had the hopes he was just naturally more respectful than to be so forward to quickly.

The Secret War: The United States Use of Private Contractors American Political Scientist Peter Warren Singer had a quote, “A general assumption is that warfare is that engaged in by public militaries (armies of citizens).” This is an idealization. The ties of states have been bound ever closer with globalization. People are traveling and moving about the world more freely, ideas are disseminating more rapidly, technology is advancing exponentially, and news and updates are received more instantaneously than ever.  One topic that is not often brought up in the media is private contractors.  The United States has been relying on private contractors to supplement troop efforts when pursuing national interests and engaging in affairs overseas.  Switching forces to the private sector can be advantageous for many reasons.  Using contractors allows for more rapid recruitment and training of forces; it is also much easier to hand pick personnel for certain missions, if need be.  By using private contractors the United States has effectively brought many troops back home and prevented many uniformed casualties.  However, on the other hand contractor use is controversial for a multitude of reasons, which can ultimately been lumped into the broad category of lack of oversight. The lack of oversight for private contractors in turn, lessens our government's transparency.

8:10:52 am-  I am in the library, where I spend many early mornings lately, polishing up my senior research presentation. And by polishing up...I mean adding a few slides and typing up a last minute outline.
