Rey did as he instructed, getting everything into motion as she slowly took over. She felt secure, ready to take on the next step. She had never done anything like this and it was driving her crazy with excitement to try. She checked everything and as ready to have her fun. If she made a mistake, she followed his advice and didnât worry about it. After all, that was what they were there for, right?
âAlright, doinâ good, just keep her steady,â he murmured reassuringly, watching the controls and readouts over her shoulder. He had expected her to have some of the finesse required for piloting, and was pleased to find that she was already showing a competent hand.
The comm in his helmet crackled with the okay from control, and he replied his gratitude over the communication link. Then he put a hand on Reyâs shoulder.
âOkay, the yoke is the most important thing to worry about right now, âcause weâre staying in the atmosphere. It works like you think it would; pull towards you to go up, push forward to go down, left and right to bank. Try to keep your movements fluid, donât try anything sudden. You should get a feel for it pretty quickly, and if you start to panic or feel uncomfortable, that switch right thereâll turn on the autopilot,â he explained before sitting back again.
âYouâre clear for takeoff and ready to roll!â
She laughed, âwell, how about pasta?â She offered, âgot some steaks I could cook up, or a bird of some kindâŚ.the universe is filled with strange creatures.âÂ
â"Iâm sure your better than you think, though, Iâve yet to meet someone to out cook my brother Rac.âÂ
âPastaâs fine by me,â he replied happily, content to go along with whatever choice she presented. Honestly, he would have been pleased by anything that wasnât a synthetic mess hall ration. He appreciated the fact that the Resistance had supplies and sustenance, but it hardly qualified as food.
âOh, yeah? Has he ever burned water before?â he asked with a smirk, only slightly embellishing his recollection of a meal preparation gone wrong.
his statement earns him a happy whirr, but there a a part of her that recalls jakku && how he HAD left her there. itâs a part the droid chooses to consider unimportant as she bumps against him affectionately.
He suspects, privately, that the astromech might call him out for his actions on that Force-forsaken sand planet. Even when she nudges him and offers no further rebuttal, he considers making yet another plea for forgiveness.
But Poe isnât sure of what else he could say.
âBest droid a pilot could ask for,â he murmurs instead, a smile breaking across his features.Â
âYes and yet the tie fighter blew up. Or got eaten by the ground. Or both. I donât remember.â
She scoffed, pretending to be offended for a moment as she closed in on the vehicle. âYes, yes I do. Itâs a Skywalker thing,â she teased, waiting for the hatch to open before giving him a shove forward. âYou first, Flyboy. Iâll be in in a second.â
âDetails,â he groused unhappily. âPoint is, we both made it out just fine.â
But it was still an inopportune moment for such complaints. He gave a mock stumble as she pushed him forward, but took the direction regardless. As he ascended the short ladder, he paused to look back at PadmĂŠ, an odd mix of fear and pride and a hint of reverence clear on his otherwise weary features.Â
Even if things went poorly, âI got killed by a Skywalkerâ would probably make for a decent story in whatever afterlife he was headed for.
Poe scrambled into the cockpit and got himself situated as he waited for her.

âYou swear?â she murmured, keeping him close and twirling a dark curl around her fingers. She sensed his thoughts, but she left it alone for now. The last thing she wanted was to make him feel uncomfortable.
A smile crossed her features when she looked up at him, feeling a blush heat up her cheeks at his words. âWell Iâm glad, Iâd like to keep you around for as long as I can⌠If youâll have me at least.â
   âCross my heart, PadmĂŠ.â
Perhaps it was foolish to make such assurances about his own safety. It wasnât something he could guarantee, unless he chose to give up his profession. Which, despite his feelings for the young Jedi, was not an option.
He noticed the rosy tint blossoming across her cheeks, and took the opportunity to place a gentle hand at her waist and pull her just a breath closer.
âIf youâre crazy enough to want this - to want us,â he said, âthen yes.â
âI-I knowâŚI-Iâm sure something will c-come up.â She hummed softly, tilting her head a bit.Â
Viera knew nurses and healers were needed. But she often felt that others could do a better job than she could in the field. She was young. Her only experience was in war. There had to be someone better qualified than her. She wondered if there were any others in her shoes. Some young pilot by some chance who didnât feel they were adequate enough to do anything out of  the war. Or was that just something she held onto?
She would have found, perhaps, some solidarity, had she chosen to voice her worries aloud. Poe had been a pilot before the rise of the Resistance, though he sometimes wondered if the career would lose its luster if the conflict stretched on. Heâd seen what war had done to his parents, how they had lived and loved but seemed so terribly haunted at times. And he worried if that would happen to him, if he would feel lost without a righteous cause to dedicate himself to. And in speaking to other pilots and soldiers, he wasnât alone in those thoughts.
âYouâre good at what you do,â he offered, glancing down at his recent injury that was ensconced in a neatly wrapped bacta patch.Â
âYou described yourself as the best freaking pilot in the galaxy. Would Han Solo agree with that?â
Rey waited for BB-8 to get into his correct position. When he did, she flipped the switch and watched as the ship moved down, scooping the little guy up and settling him back in the carrier.Â
âLook at that! Comfy, B?â She asked, turning to face forward again. âAll right. Now what?â She asked, facing Poe with a large smile.Â
âSo far, so good,â he grinned, placing a warm hand on the girlâs shoulder. âNow, your astromech takes care of most of the technical stuff, like keeping systems in check, doing basic repairs, plotting hyperspace routes; that sort of thing. Thatâs why youâve gotta be nice to âem.â
BB-8 chirruped its agreement. Poe laughed.
âWhich leaves all the piloting to the pilot. Youâre gonna close the canopy first,â he said, indicating to the appropriate control as he spoke, âthen hit that to turn your repulsorlifts on. Go easy on the yoke to maneuver out of the hangar. Youâll get an all-clear over the comm from flight control, and then Iâll tell you what to do next. And donât worry about making mistakes; thatâs what BB and I are here for.â
The pilot set his helmet in place and sat back in his seat.
   âReady when you are, Rey.â
âThatâs true. Though if anyone gives you grief send âem my way. Iâll get âem out of your hair,â she laughed, shaking her head as she leaned into him.
âI like flying for the most part, so long as I donât look down too much or end up in a small cockpit. Claustrophobic.â
âYeah? Maybe flyingâs off the list, then.â
It was his go-to way of impressing people, usually. Friends, family, romantic interests; if Poe was trying to introduce someone to the thing he loved most, heâd take them to the stars. But he could respect that such activities werenât to everyoneâs liking.
Heâd just have to find different ways to spend time with her.

She chuckled, the thought of someone else having issues with lying was not something she could even think up of.Â
âWell. I think I might take that over my horrid laugh,â she grinned. â"Force knows you could probably pull it off like it was meant to happen, you canât hide a loud and obnoxious laugh.â  She nodded slightly.
Rana breathed a sigh of relief as his X-wing came into view.Â
âYeah, but the talking tends to annoy the person youâre lying to even more. Which is good, I guess, if only âcause it distracts them for a while.â
At least, that was what he occasionally told himself. While Poe often bragged that he could talk his way out of anything, he knew it was just a nervous habit that no amount of life-threatening experiences could shake.
âLittle bit further,â he said reassuringly. âEverythingâs gonna be fine.â
Well she certainly is that.Â
âYou can fly anything? Wow⌠Thatâs good. I canât fly.â Matt realized he was getting distracted and focused back on their escape. âIâll uncuff you, but make it look like youâre cuffed, okay?â
The technician pulled out a key and opened the cuffs around the pilotâs wrists, but left them on. He then grabbed the other manâs arm and started walking towards the loading bay, hoping everything worked out.
âDonât mess this up, and donât let me mess this up.â
He considered running, if only for a moment, when he felt the locking mechanism on his cuffs disengage. It was a caged-animal instinct, some deep down part of him that screamed to run the second a way out was presented.Â
But his higher levels of thought told him better.Â
He allowed Matt to lead him along, though he had a feeling the very sight of a radar tech guiding a prisoner around was enough to raise questions. Surely they looked out of place? Then again, Poe wasnât about to start questioning his luck now.Â
âIâll do my best,â he assured with a lopsided smirk that he quickly wiped from his face. Prisoners didnât smile, especially ones who should have been going to meet their doom.
⯠â âWhile the vote of confidence is appreciated, although youâve never sen me actually use the force.â She smiled back at him and put a hand on his shoulder. âDonât worry, we will beat them this time, and if we donât, weâll never stop fighting. Thatâs what really matters.â
âDonât need to see it to believe it,â he shrugged, smiling fondly at her touch. âThatâs what the Force is all about, isnât it?â
âThey could put you on posters with quotes like that,â he joked lightly.Â
Though Vieraâs job was secure and the chances of her being shot or something along those lines were slim to none, that didnât stop her from worrying about the future of those she was around. The soldiers and pilots who came back bloodied and bruised. How could she think of herself when others could easily not make it out to the other side of the war?
âI l-like the nursing th-thing. I was a caret-taker before h-hand, but my d-duties involved th-that of a n-nurse. I-I hope th-that once this is a-all over, a m-medcenter m-might t-take me in as a n-nurse.âÂ
âPeople still get hurt or sick, war or not,â he agreed. âThe galaxy could always use more healers.â
In truth, Poe had always admired those who possessed such skills. He knew basic first aid, as did most soldiers, but there was something about the idea of being to help people like that, of being able to save lives. He wondered if it was anything like the satisfaction he took out of repairing ships and droids, though repairing living, breathing beings was a much more complex matter.

âYou crashed it,â she pointed out, rolling her eyes as she picked up the pace.
Unfortunately for the handsome pilot, the famous Skywalker stubborn gene rose up and she gave him a LOOK at the mention of wanting a more experienced pilot at the controls.
âJust for that I should stick you in BB-8â˛s spot,â she commented, brown eyes narrowing as she gave him a tug. âIâm flying. Already took out a lot of their guns on my way in so we should be fine getting out.â
Yeah she was totally going to get chewed out by Leia for basically hitting all the buttons on the X-wing, effectively destroying a lot of things in enemy territory in her rage. Youâd think that her cousin would be smart enough to know by now that if he took Poe then she was going to kill everything that got in her way.
âYeah, but I lived,â he countered. âAnd so did Finn. With only minor injuries.â
Heâd wandered the Jakkuvian desert for quite a while before he could so much as remember his own name again, but she didnât need to know that.
âFine, fine, youâre as bad as the General, you know that?â he muttered. Stubbornness must have run in the family. It was terrible timing for an argument, and he knew that PadmĂŠ wouldnât relent. And time wasnât exactly on their side, so for the sake of expediting their departure, Poe figured it was in his best interest to just go along with it.
she smiled brightly. âyeah, I guess your right,â she chuckled, then slid out of her chair. âWell. Iâm always up for cooking, itâs like building stuff only itâs less likely to blow up in your face,â she joked.
She made sure the autopilot was on before she waved for Poe to follow. âwhat are you in the mood for?âÂ
âYouâve never seen me cook, then,â he grinned. His culinary skills were passable, enough to sustain him should he ever end up in a dire situation. But he was no master chef. A few family recopies from his home world and the basic knowledge required to concoct them were about all he could handle.
âAh, anything, really,â he shrugged. âWhatever you like to make.â
